Double-blind, crossover study of the clinical efficacy and the hemorheological effects of pentoxifylline in patients with occlusive arterial disease …

1984

The effect of a 3 month daily administration of 800 mg pentoxifylline (Trental 400 bds) or placebo was assessed under double blind crossover design in 18 patients (12 males and 6 females) with peripheral occlusive arterial disease in respect of painfree walking distance and various hemorheological and hemostasiological variables, platelet aggregation, serum cholesterol and triglycerides. In first treatment period walking distance significantly increased with pentoxifylline by 46% from baseline 121 ± 15 m and by 4% with placebo from baseline 134 ± 18 m. Pentoxifylline administration furthermore yielded significant decrease in whole blood and plasma viscosity and significant increase in eryt…

Red blood cell deformability in multiple myeloma1.

2018

The aim of this study was the evaluation of the erythrocyte deformability in multiple myeloma (MM). We enrolled 29 MM patients and we evaluated, on fasting venous blood, the erythrocyte deformability, expressed as elongation index, and examined using the diffractometric method. By comparing normal controls and MM patients, a significant decrease in erythrocyte deformability, especially at low shear stresses, was found. In this research paper we evaluated all the hypothesis for a possible explanation of the behaviour of red blood cell deformability in MM, even considering how the alteration of erythrocyte deformability worsens the microcirculatory flow in these patients in association with t…

Hemorheological parameters in Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS).

2018

There is scarcity of information about the hemorheological pattern in subjects with Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS). This preliminary research is focused on the behaviour of whole-blood and plasma viscosity, haematocrit and erythrocyte deformability in the above clinical condition. We enrolled 21 MGUS subjects (10 women and 11 men; mean age 66.4 ± 11.6 years). In fasting venous blood we examined whole-blood and plasma viscosity at high and low shear rates, haematocrit, the ratios between whole-blood viscosity (at high and low shear rate) and haematocrit × 100, the ratio between plasma viscosity at low and high shear rate, and the erythrocyte deformability expressed…

Gas-liquid mass transfer rates in unbaffled tanks stirred by PBT: scale-up effects and pumping direction

2018

Abstract Unbaffled stirred tanks are increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to common baffled tanks for a range of applications such as biochemical, food or pharmaceutical processes where the presence of baffles is undesirable for some reason. In this work, the mass transfer performance of unbaffled stirred tanks with pitched blade turbine, operating either in up-pumping or down-pumping mode, was investigated. The influence of impeller size and liquid viscosity were also investigated. The mass transfer intensity was measured by means of the Simplified Dynamic Pressure. Method The measurements concerned both coalescent and non-coalescent (viscous) batches. Results confirm that incre…

Temporal control of xyloglucan self-assembly into layered structures by radiation-induced degradation

2016

Partially degalactosylated xyloglucan from tamarind seeds (Deg-XG) is a very appealing biopolymer for the production of in situ gelling systems at physiological temperature. In this work, we observe that the morphology of hydrogels evolves towards high degrees of structural organization with time, yielding to dense stacks of thin membranes within 24 h of incubation at 37 °C. We also explore the possibility offered by gamma irradiation of controlling the time scale of this phenomenon, the final morphology and mechanical properties of the system. Structural and molecular modifications of Deg-XG with dose are investigated by FTIR, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and rotational viscosimetry. The…

Dynamic Tuning of Viscoelastic Hydrogels with Carbonyl Iron Microparticles Reveals the Rapid Response of Cells to Three-Dimensional Substrate Mechani…

2021

Current methods to dynamically tune three-dimensional hydrogel mechanics require specific chemistries and substrates that make modest, slow, and often irreversible changes to their mechanical properties, exclude the use of protein-based scaffolds, or alter hydrogel microstructure and pore size. Here, we rapidly and reversibly alter the mechanical properties of hydrogels consisting of extracellular matrix proteins and proteoglycans by adding carbonyl iron microparticles (MP) and applying external magnetic fields. This approach drastically alters hydrogel mechanics: rheology reveals that application of a 4,000 Oe magnetic field to a 5 mg/mL collagen hydrogel containing 10 wt% MPs increases th…

Rheological, mechanical and morphological characterization of monopolymer blends made by virgin and photo-oxidized polypropylene

2021

In this work, monopolymer blends of virgin polypropylene and photo-oxidized polypropylene were prepare and characterized. The polypropylene samples were subjected to accelerated ageing to simulate the effects of outdoor exposure of polypropylene. After exposure, samples were pelletized and mixed with the same virgin polymer. The rheological, mechanical and morphological characterization was conducted on both the polymers and the blends. Both viscosity and mechanical properties decrease with increases in the content of recycled, photo-oxidized components and of the level of degradation of this component. In addition, the experimental data were compared with a model that takes into account bo…

Green composites of organic materials and recycled post-consumer polyethylene

2004

International audience; Addition of organic fillers to post‐consumer recycled plastics can give rise to several advantages. First of all, the cost of these fillers is usually very low, the organic fillers are biodegradable contributing to an improved environmental impact and, last but not least, some mechanical and thermomechanical properties can be enhanced. Organic fillers are not widely used in the plastic industry although their use is increasing. Bad dispersion into the polymer matrix at high‐level content and poor adhesion with the matrix are the more important obstacles to this approach. In this work various organic fillers have been used with a post‐consumer plastic material origina…

Damping by Bulk and Shear Viscosity of Confined Acoustic Phonons for Nanostructures in Aqueous Solution

2007

International audience; A nanoparticle in aqueous solution is modeled as a homogeneous elastic isotropic continuum sphere in contact with an infinite viscous compressible Newtonian fluid. The frequencies and damping of the confined vibrational modes of the sphere are calculated for the material parameters of a CdSe nanoparticle in water and a poly(methyl methacrylate) nanosphere in water. Although the effects of viscosity are found to be negligible for macroscopic objects, for nanoscale objects, both the frequency and damping of the vibrational modes are significantly affected by the viscosity of the liquid. Furthermore, both shear viscosity and bulk viscosity play an important role. A mode…
