Facilitating text understanding for e-learning users
2014
Web information on different disciplines (mainly technical ones) is mainly created by the different experts (engineers, scientists, physicians, lawyers, etc.) who use their own 'technical' language. On the other hand, this information is often read by general users who do not have the same skills and vocabularies of the experts and have difficulties to understand and learn it. In order to allow e-learners to use any document available on the web and understand it, it is desirable to have a system that takes a text written with technical terms and automatically translates it in a plain language and provides additional information with the same kind of language. In this work we present the me…
U-MedSearch: A Meta Search Engine of Medical Content for Different Users and Learning Needs
2015
More and more people use Internet to look for medical information for understanding and learning but different users, such as experts (e.g., physicians) and consumers (e.g., patients), have different needs and bring different levels of reading ability and prior knowledge. Generic and specific search engines and specialized health sites either do not exploit the whole web or overload users with information of different nature. On the contrary, it is important for a user to immediately find the information on the topic being explored that has the 'right' amount of information and level of complexity. This paper presents a meta search engine of medical information on the web, U-MedSearch, that…
Finding the best web medical content for different learner categories
2015
In the age of Internet where any kind of information can be easily found online, it is becoming increasingly evident that more and more people use the World Wide Web to seek health and medical information for understanding and learning. Different users have diverse needs, even when searching for the same topic. This is certainly true in healthcare, where a patient, a physician or a health executive might look for information on the same topic but have different necessities and bring different levels of reading ability and prior knowledge together with a different vocabulary. Generic search engines (like Google, Bing or Yahoo) work on the whole web but make generic searches often overloading…
Inferring Business Rules from Natural Language Expressions
2014
This paper proposes a mapping technique for automatically translating rules expressed in a format based on natural language, i.e. Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) standard, into production rules that can be executed by a computer (i.e. Rule engine). The proposed approach achieves a twofold purpose: on the one hand non IT skilled people (i.e. Domain expert) can effectively focus on business rules definition by using statements in natural language, and on the other hand the IT staff will have to manage business rules in a format ready to be executed by a rule engine. The main goal is to overcome some weaknesses in the software development process that could produce i…
A Methodology for Graphical Modeling of Business Rules
2011
This work proposes a novel methodology based on the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) standard capable of graphically modeling business rules. A set of new representation patterns allows business analysts to map processes described through BPMN into conditions and actions of business rules. Our approach exploits Domain Specific Language techniques in order to make the methodology independent from the programming language supported by the specific rule engine. Moreover, this work proposes a web graphical editor, instantiated on a specific sample scenario, where the selected rule engine is Drools, one of the most used open source products. The developed editor allows business analysts…
Didaktiskās spēles kā vārdu krājuma sekmētājas 5-6 gadus veciem bērniem
2017
The covariation between parental and expert evaluations of early language skills
2013
This study investigated the potential interrelationship between parental (maternal) and expert assessments of the expressive and receptive language skills of 12- to 18-month-old children. The language activities of 27 children were monitored by their mothers (MCDI scale: Lyytinen, 2000. Varhaisen kommunikaation ja kielen kehityksen arviointimenetelma. The development of phonological awareness, the knowledge of the structural combinatoriality of a language, has been widely investigated in relation to reading (dis)ability across languages. However, the extent to which knowledge of phonemic units may interact with spoken language organization in (transparent) alphabetical languages has hardly been investigated. The present study examined whether phonemic awareness correlates with coarticulation degree, commonly used as a metric for estimating the size of children's production units. A speech production task was designed to test for developmental differences in intra-syllabic coarticulation degree in 41 German children from 4 to 7 years of a…
A note on alternative parameterizations of a model for evaluating agreement between two tests.
2004
The agreement between two competing tests which purport to measure the same trait is a common concern in test development. In this paper three alternative parameterizations of the measurement model useful in this context are presented. Both one-factor and two-factor approaches are applied. Lord's classic example, where the main problem is to investigate whether time limits represent an extra speed component in a vocabulary test, is used to illustrate the ideas.
L’aportació del Gazophylacium catalano-latinum, de Joan Lacavalleria, a la terminologia catalana
2017
The publication in 1696 of the Catalan-Latin dictionary Gazophylacium Catalano-Latinum by Joan Lacavalleria led to the incorporation into Catalan of a large number of technical terms, in spite of the early modern sociocultural context being unfavourable to scientific and technical developments. The Gazophylacium is the Catalan version of a French-Latin dictionary, Le Dictionaire royal augmente by Francois-Antoine Pomey. Therefore, Lacavalleria may be considered as an initiator of the systematic transfer procedure of terminological units of French origin into Catalan, which were also adopted by many other languages of culture until well into the twentieth century, and that favoured the circu…
