La voce, il gesto, la scena. Elementi teatrali nelle commedie latine del XII e XIII secolo

2019

Preparing students to participate to the didactic activities of university teacher

2016

2019

From the shade into the sun: exploring pride and shame in students with special needs in Finnish VET

2021

This paper reports on a study of the dynamics of social emotions and social bonds between students and class teachers by analysing the narratives of students receiving intensive special support in the Finnish vocational education and training (VET) system. Pride refers to a strong and safe involvement in interaction, and shame implies intimidated social bonds. The analysis is based on abductive content analysis for which Greimas’ actant model worked as an analysis tool. We found some students showing high respect to their teachers who acted as senders setting the objects for students’ studying. Pride is based on the students’ experiences in achieving the objects, thereby pleasing their teac…

‘I Got To Answer the Way I Wanted To’: Intellectual Disabilities and Participation in Technology Design Activities

2021

User involvement in technology design processes can have positive implications for the designed service, but less is known about how such participation affects people with intellectual disabilities. We explored how 13 individuals with intellectual disabilities experienced participation in the design of a transport support application. The study is based on qualitative interviews, photovoice interviews, participant observations, and Smileyometer ratings. A thematic analysis generated the following themes: a sense of pride and ownership, an experience of socialization, and a sense of empowerment. The findings suggest that participation in design activities is a primarily positive experience t…

Spoken conversational context improves query auto-completion in web search

2021

Web searches often originate from conversations in which people engage before they perform a search. Therefore, conversations can be a valuable source of context with which to support the search process. We investigate whether spoken input from conversations can be used as a context to improve query auto-completion. We model the temporal dynamics of the spoken conversational context preceding queries and use these models to re-rank the query auto-completion suggestions. Data were collected from a controlled experiment and comprised conversations among 12 participant pairs conversing about movies or traveling. Search query logs during the conversations were recorded and temporally associated…

Quality of Life with Voice Prosthesis after Total Laryngectomy.

2021

Introduction: The loss of voice after total laryngectomy is one of the main impairments in personal and social life. In order to prevent potential psycho-social consequences in the patient and his family, the restoration of phonatory function is the main objective of post-laryngectomy rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to assess quality of life in patients who received prosthetic voice after total laryngectomy. Materials and Methods: Over a one-year period, 51 patients with voice prostheses after total laryngectomy were recruited. 32 patients (62.74%) were administered radiation therapy and 9 patients (17.64%) underwent to surgical reconstruction with flaps. Each patient was administ…

<title>Revenue-maximization-based adaptive WFQ</title>

2002

In the future Internet, di erent applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and Video-on-Demand (VoD) arise with di erent Quality of Service (QoS) parameters including e.g. guaranteed bandwidth, delay jitter, and latency. Different kinds of service classes (e.g. gold, silver, bronze) arise. The customers of di erent classes pay di erent prices to the service provider, who must share resources in a plausible way. In a router, packets are queued using a multi-queue system, where each queue corresponds to one service class. In this paper, an adaptive Weighted Fair Queue based algorithm for traAEc allocation is presented and studied. The weights in gradient type WFQ algorithm are adapted using r…

Endpoint Admission Control with Delay Variation Measurements for QoS in IP Networks.

2002

In this paper we describe a novel Endpoint Admission Control scheme (EAC) for IP telephony. EAC mechanisms are driven by independent measurements taken by the edge nodes on a flow of packets injected in the network to probe the source to destination path. Our scheme is characterized by two fundamental features. First, it does not rely on any additional procedure in internal network routers other than the capability to apply different service priorities to probing and data packets. Second, the connection admission decision is based on the analysis of the probing flow delay variation statistics. Simulation results, which focus on a IP telephony scenario, show that, despite the lack of core ro…
