2015

«PER NON DAR MOTO ALLE FABBRICHE»: THE ROYAL ENGINEER SCIPIONE BASTA AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROANO CHAPEL IN THE CATHEDRAL OF MONREALE. In December 1686 the Royal Engineer Scipione Basta, a personality still largely to be investigated but which seems to portend a specific expertise in techno-constructive issues and in particular in structural reinforcement, was appointed by the Viceroyal Government to draw up a technical report concerning some delicate constructive aspects of the project of the architect fra Giovanni da Monreale for the chapel commissioned by the archbishop Roano for the cathedral. Due to the particular configuration of the building to be constructed –a domed octagonal …

Settore ICAR/18 - Storia Dell'Architettura

Different α2δ Accessory Subunits Regulate Distinctly Different Aspects of Calcium Channel Function in the Same Drosophila Neurons

2019

AbstractVoltage gated calcium channels (VGCCs) regulate neuronal excitability and translate activity into calcium dependent intracellular signaling. The pore forming α1subunit of high voltage activated (HVA) VGCCs operates not in isolation but associates with α2δ accessory subunits. α2δ subunits can affect calcium channel biophysical properties, surfacing, localization and transport, but theirin vivofunctions are incompletely understood. In vertebrates, it is largely unknown whether different combinations of the four α2δ and the 7 α1subunits mediate different or partially redundant functions or whether different α1/α2δ combinations regulate different aspects of VGCC function. This study cap…

Estructura nuclear y quiescencia en células madre neurales

2017

Model predictions of the ionic mechanisms underlying the beating and bursting pacemaker characteristics of molluscan neurons

1976

The general properties of the excitable membrane on molluscan pacemaker neurons can be described on the basis of a fair amount of experimental evidence available in the literature. The neuronal membrane exhibits under voltage clamp an initial inward current carried by both Na+ and Ca2+ ions, the time- and voltage-dependent characteristics of which are similar to that of other excitable structures. The conductance mechanism for the two ion species and the transport kinetics appear to be closely similar. The time course and amplitude of the delayed outward current carried by K+ ions shows a marked dependence on the membrane potential. Characteristic for the molluscan neurons is the existence …

A window amplitude discriminator with adjustable upper and lower thresholds

1976

An amplitude window discriminator is described which permits selection of spikes from a multi-unit recording, provided the signal-to-noise ratio is high enough. The device can be built at relatively low cost and time. The circuitry permits analysis of the positive or the negative deflections of the recorded signals. In Part One of the circuitry, the signals are pre-amplified and may be inverted in polarity. In Part Two, the pulses are compared to a variable lower threshold voltage, and low amplitude noise is eliminated. Part Three depicts a logic circuit for elimination of disturbing high-amplitude signals, whose output delivers digital pulses, each corresponding to an original signal (e.g.…

Early life adversity targets the transcriptional signature of hippocampal NG2+ glia and affects voltage gated sodium (Nav) channels properties

2021

The precise mechanisms underlying the detrimental effects of early life adversity (ELA) on adult mental health remain still elusive. To date, most studies have exclusively targeted neuronal populations and not considered neuron-glia crosstalk as a crucially important element for the integrity of stress-related brain function. Here, we have investigated the impact of ELA, in the form of a limited bedding and nesting material (LBN) paradigm, on a glial subpopulation with unique properties in brain homeostasis, the NG2+ cells. First, we have established a link between maternal behavior, activation of the offspring's stress response and heterogeneity in the outcome to LBN manipulation. We furth…

Highly selective detection of Epinephrine at oxidized Single-Wall Carbon Nanohorns modified Screen Printed Electrodes (SPEs)

2014

Oxidized Single-Wall Carbon Nanohorns (o-SWCNHs) were used, for the first time, to assemble chemically modified Screen Printed Electrodes (SPEs) selective towards the electrochemical detection of Epinephrine (Ep), in the presence of Serotonine-5-HT (S-5HT), Dopamine (DA), Nor-Epineprhine (Nor-Ep), Ascorbic Acid (AA), Acetaminophen (Ac) and Uric Acid (UA). The Ep neurotransmitter was detected by using Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV), in a wide linear range of concentration (2-2500 μM) with high sensitivity (55.77 A M(-1) cm(-2)), very good reproducibility (RSD% ranging from 2 to 10 for different SPEs), short response time for each measurement (only 2s) and low detection of limit (LOD=0.…

Effects of high-energy electrons in advanced NAND flash memories

2016

We study the effects of high-energy electrons on advanced NAND Flash memories with multi-level and single-level cell architecture. We analyze the error rate in floating gate cells as a function of electron energy, evaluate the impact of total ionizing dose, and discuss the physical origin of the observed behavior.

The Flipped Classroom: a Way to Decrease Boredom and Encourage Student Motivation.
