PV System Design for Off-Grid Applications

2015

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has the versatility and flexibility for developing off-grid electricity system for different regions, especially in remote rural areas. While conventionally straight forward designs were used to set up off-grid PV-based system in many areas for wide range of applications, it is now possible to adapt a smart design approach for the off-grid solar PV hybrid system. A range of off-grid system configurations are possible, depending upon load requirements and their electrical properties as well as on site-specific available energy resources. The overall goal of the off-gird system design should be such that it should provide maximum efficiency, reliability and …

Design of MOS Current Mode Logic Gates – Computing the Limits of Voltage Swing and Bias Current

2005

Minimizing a quality metric for an MCML gate, such as power-delay product or energy-delay product, requires solving a system of nonlinear equations subject to constraints on both bias current and voltage swing. In this paper, we will show that the limits of the swing and the bias current are affected by the constraints on maximum area and maximum delay. Moreover, methods for computing such limits are presented.

Size dependent light absorption modulation and enhanced carrier transport in germanium quantum dots devices

2015

Quantum confinement in closely packed arrays of Ge quantum dots (QDs) was studied for energy applications. In this work, we report an efficient tuning mechanism of the light harvesting and detection of Ge QDs. Thin films of SiGeO alloys, produced by rf-magnetron sputtering, were annealed at 600 degrees C in N-2 to induce precipitation of small amorphous Ge QDs into the oxide matrix. Varying the Ge content, the QD size was tailored between 2 and 4 nm, as measured by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements indicate the formation of pure SiO2, as well as the presence of a sub-stoichiometric Ge oxide shell at the QD interface. Light …

The effect of Transient over Voltages on the Partial Discharges activity in HVDC joints

2021

Rapid growth of HVDC cable line installations is expected in the coming years. Several research groups have investigated dielectric phenomena that occur in the insulation of HVDC cables and accessories that accelerate aging and reduce the reliability of this technology over time. Unlike in HVAC cables, under HVDC stress, the distribution of the electric field inside the insulation layer depends not only on the applied voltage but also on the temperature distribution and on other factors related to manufacturing such as the presence of impurities. Reaching local and transient electric field peaks can enhance the onset of Partial Discharges (PDs) which can lead to premature aging of the insul…

Economic analysis of different supporting policies for the production of electrical energy by solar photovoltaics in western European Union countries

2010

Abstract Within various renewable energy technologies, photovoltaics (PV) today attracts considerable attention due to its potential to contribute a major share of renewable energy in the future. However, PV market development is, undoubtedly, dependent on the political support of any given country. In this paper, after a brief analysis of national support policies in PV technology in western European Union (EU) countries, the authors perform an economic analysis of the main support mechanisms as implemented in the same countries, based on the calculation of the cash flow, the Net Present Value (NPV) and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) indices. The analysis shows that in some situations s…

Solar pavements: A critical review

2021

Abstract Resilient, smart and sustainable: these are the keywords for the next generation of road infrastructures. As a renewable and environment-friendly energy harvesting pavement, the concept of a solar pavement has become one of the most researched new highway transportation infrastructures with a goal to transform the road system from the energy consumer to the energy provider, and eliminate or alleviate pollution from the source of energy. At present, the commercial technology through photovoltaic is limited by space installation requirements, which restricts its popularization and application. On the other hand, applying photovoltaic power generation technology to the pavement can pr…

Solvent-Independent Electrode Potentials of Solids Undergoing Insertion Electrochemical Reactions: Part III. Experimental Data for Prussian Blue Unde…

2012

Prussian blue-modified electrodes immersed in K+-containing solutions can be used to obtain a solvent-independent redox potential system. On the basis of theoretical modeling of diffusion processes occurring under the conditions of voltammetry of immobilized particles, voltammetric and chronoamperometric data can be combined to obtain solvent-independent electrode potentials for the K+-assisted one-electron reduction of Prussian blue to Berlin white. Data for water, MeOH, EtOH, MeCN, DMS, DMF, and NM are provided.

Identification of Processes Associated with Different Iron Sites in the Prussian Blue Structure by in Situ Electrochemical, Gravimetric, and Spectros…

2012

The physicochemical properties of Prussian blue films are strongly dependent on the ratio Fe3+/Fe2+ in the structure. This ratio can be modulated by electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, and some information about physicochemical properties can be extracted from in situ auxiliary techniques. Prussian blue films have been studied by the use of in situ vis–NIR spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance, and electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). By cyclic voltammetry + absorbance derivative curves + mass derivative curves, it has been possible to identify at least three different processes during the reduction of Prussian bl…

Identification of electroactive sites in Prussian Yellow films

2013

Abstract Prussian Blue films were electrogenerated on the surface of the transparent ITO electrodes. The electrochemical oxidation to the Prussian Yellow form was investigated by means of in situ voltammetry and vis–NIR spectroscopic techniques. Changes of the whole spectra between 400 and 950 nm were analyzed and three characteristic wavelengths were selected to in situ follow the electrochemical changes of the films. Voltammetric peaks and absorbance derivative curves at these three wavelengths were deconvoluted and were interpreted such as the overlapping of different electrochemical processes. The correlation between these overlapped processes has allowed proposing three different elect…
