Modulation of voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels by pumiliotoxin 251D: A “joint venture” alkaloid from arthropods and amphibians
2008
Abstract Certain amphibians provide themselves with a chemical defense by accumulating lipophilic alkaloids into skin glands from dietary arthropods. Examples of such alkaloids are pumiliotoxins (PTXs). In general, PTXs are known as positive modulators of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs). Unlike other PTXs, PTX 251D does not share this characteristic. However, mice and insect studies showed that PTX 251D is highly toxic and to date the basis of its toxicity remains unknown. In this work, we searched for the possible target of PTX 251D . The toxin was therefore made synthetically and tested on four VGSCs (mammalian rNa v 1.2/β 1 , rNa v 1.4/β 1 , hNa v 1.5/β 1 and insect Para/tipE ) and…
Optimal Mass Transport on Metric Graphs
2015
We study an optimal mass transport problem between two equal masses on a metric graph where the cost is given by the distance in the graph. To solve this problem we find a Kantorovich potential as the limit of $p$-Laplacian--type problems in the graph where at the vertices we impose zero total flux boundary conditions. In addition, the approximation procedure allows us to find a transport density that encodes how much mass has to be transported through a given point in the graph, and also provides a simple formula of convex optimization for the total cost.
Polymorphism and solvates of flecainide base
2013
Flecainide base is pharmaceutically active substance used for production of flecainide acetate which is known in market as Tambacor, Almarytm, Apocard, Ecrinal or Flecaine. It is determined that flecainide base forms four polymorphic forms abbreviated as Ib, IIb, IIIb and IVb. Flecainide base form Ib is thermodynamically stable form at laboratory temperature while form IIIb is stable at higher temperatures. Flecainide form Ib absorbs water in its structure between layers and forms non-stoichiometric hydrate. Flecainide base binds with organic solvents and form monosolvates. Flecainide base form Ib crystallizes in orthorhombic crystals with lattice parameters a = 27.88 Å, b = 13.78 Å, c = 9.…
Methods for Transient Expression of Hetero-Oligomeric Ligand-Gated Ion Channels

Astrocytic potassium and calcium channels as integrators of the inflammatory and ischemic CNS microenvironment.
2021
Abstract Astrocytes are key regulators of their surroundings by receiving and integrating stimuli from their local microenvironment, thereby regulating glial and neuronal homeostasis. Cumulating evidence supports a plethora of heterogenic astrocyte subpopulations that differ morphologically and in their expression patterns of receptors, transporters and ion channels, as well as in their functional specialisation. Astrocytic heterogeneity is especially relevant under pathological conditions. In experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS), morphologically distinct astrocytic subtypes were identified and could be linked to transcriptome changes dur…
Total ionizing dose (TID) evaluation of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) current sensors
2015
Abstract The paper shows an experimental study to know the behaviour of tunnel magnetoresistive effect-based current sensors configured in a Wheatstone bridge in response to irradiation. In particular the sensitivity, hysteresis, output offset voltage and input resistance are discussed when the sensors are submitted to a total irradiation dose of 43 krad with 36 krad/h dose rate. The same electrical parameters were studied subsequently once the irradiated sensors were submitted to an 80 °C annealing process. The studied TMR sensors are applied in a switched-mode power converter for space application.
A methodology for evaluation of operational zones for distributed generation based on DFIG
2017
This study developed a methodology to determine zones of acceptable voltage profiles for wind power generation connected to distribution systems. Three load profiles (residential, commercial and industrial) connected to the distribution network were analyzed considering the impact on voltage levels and steady-state stability for different wind speeds and wind generator control strategies. The wind generator model is based on doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and were developed using Matlab/Simulink. The presented methodology can be used to map the impact on operation of different types of control, the time of day and the available wind speed and it is not limited only for DFIG. The resu…
Different Space Charge Behavior of Materials Used in AC and DC Systems
2017
The aim of the present work is to evaluate the behavior, from the space charge accumulation phenomenon point of view, of three different XLPE specimens used as insulation materials in high voltage systems. Considering that under DC stress the charge accumulation is more relevant as compared to the AC case, in the specimens for DC applications additives are typically added. In this work, three different specimens are analyzed. One is a free additive sample used conventionally under AC stress and two others include different additives that are used under DC stress. In order to measure the space charge accumulation, the Pulsed Electro Acoustic (PEA) method has been employed. For each sample, t…
Effect of different aqueous solutions of pure salts and salt mixtures in reverse electrodialysis systems for closed-loop applications
2018
Abstract Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) in a closed-loop arrangement is a viable way to convert low-grade heat into electric power. The present work experimentally investigates the use of pure salt- and equimolar two salts-water solutions as feeds in a lab-scale RED unit. RED performances were analysed in terms of Open Circuit Voltage (OCV), stack resistance and corrected power density. The pure salts and the mixtures employed were chosen via a computational analysis. Effect of feed solution velocity and concentration was investigated. Results concerning the pure salt-water experiments show that NH4Cl is the most performing salt in the concentration range probed, while higher power density v…
A high-accuracy calibration method for temperature dependent photoluminescence imaging
2019
This work demonstrates a novel technique for calibrating temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) images of silicon wafers with high accuracy. The PL signal is calibrated using a heat-controlled photoconductance (PC) stage integrated into the PL imaging system. The PC signal is measured in true steady state condition and used to determine the calibration constant under the same temperature and illumination as the PL image, thus providing a high-precision calibration. This results in a robust method for imaging of important physical parameters, such as the minority carrier lifetime and the implied voltage at different temperatures, as well as the temperature coefficients and the recombin…
