Multicanonical multigrid Monte Carlo method.

To further improve the performance of Monte Carlo simulations of first-order phase transitions we propose to combine the multicanonical approach with multigrid techniques. We report tests of this proposition for the d-dimensional ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}^{4}$ field theory in two different situations. First, we study quantum tunneling for d=1 in the continuum limit, and second, we investigate first-order phase transitions for d=2 in the infinite volume limit. Compared with standard multicanonical simulations we obtain improvement factors of several, and of about one order of magnitude, respectively.
Multicanonical Simulations of the Tails of the Order-Parameter Distribution of the Two-Dimensional Ising Model

We report multicanonical Monte Carlo simulations of the tails of the order-parameter distribution of the two-dimensional Ising model for fixed boundary conditions. Clear numerical evidence for "fat" stretched exponential tails is found below the critical temperature, indicating the possible presence of fat tails at the critical temperature.
Topological protection of highly entangled non-Gaussian two-photon states

Abstract We study theoretically the evolution of entangled non-Gaussian two-photon states in disordered topological lattices. Specifically, we consider spatially entangled two-photon states, modulated by Laguerre polynomials up to the 3rd order, which feature ring-shaped spatial and spectral correlation patterns. Such states are discrete analogs of photon-subtracted squeezed states, which are ubiquitous in optical quantum information processing or sensing applications. We find that, in general, a higher degree of entanglement coincides with a loss of topological protection against disorder, this is in line with previous results for Gaussian two-photon states. The article addresses the so-called principle of speciality referred to in Article 607e of the Criminal Procedures Code in connection with Article 27 of the Council Framework Decision of 13 June 2002 no. 2002/584/JHA on the European arrest warrant and the surrender procedures between Member States, and the exception to that rule specified in Article 607e § 3, item 2 CPC and Article 27(3)(a) of the EAW Decision. This article also assesses the order of the Appellate Court in Gdańsk of 31 May 2016, case reference II AKzw 921/16, and the argument that the deadline of 45 days referred to in Article 607e § 3, item 2 CPC cannot start to run with respect to a Polish national. This editorial provides the overall context for the five cases—three national and two international—covered in this thematic issue. While the cases are from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), they highlight fundamental questions of journalism everywhere, including contradictions between freedom and control, professionalism and politics, individual and collective. The associations of journalists serve as very useful platforms to study these questions, especially at historical turning points when the whole political system changed, as happened twice in CEE after World War II.

New age and isotopic data show that the high-grade basement rocks of Sri Lanka were not linked to the Archaean granulite domain of southern India but experienced their main structural and metamorphic development during the Pan-African event some 950 to 550 Ma ago. This occurred when West Gondwana and East Gondwana collided to form one of the longest collisional structures in the Supercontinent — the Mozambique belt that extends from Mozambique to Ethiopia and Sudan. A major tectonic boundary, interpreted as a thrust zone, divides the Highland/Southwestern Complex in the central part of Sri Lanka from the Vijayan Complex in the E and SE. An outline of shear-sense analysis in high-grade rocks

Ductile shear zones are important in tectonic reconstructions as a source of information on the relative motion of large crustal blocks or plates in the geological past. Methods to interpret fabric in ductile shear zones were mostly developed for low grade rocks where overprinting relations are usually well preserved. However, high grade shear zones are common and dominate in many Precambrian terrains. High grade shear zones should be analysed in a different way from low grade zones.
