The mRNA encoding the beta-subunit of the mitochondrial H(+)-ATP synthase (beta-F1-ATPase) is localized in an approx. 150 nm structure of the hepatocyte of mammals. In the present study, we have investigated the cis- and trans-acting factors involved in the generation of the ribonucleoprotein complex containing beta-F1-ATPase mRNA. Two cis-acting elements (beta1.2 and 3'beta) have been identified. The beta1.2 element is placed in the open reading frame, downstream of the region encoding the mitochondrial pre-sequence of the protein. HIF-1α is pivotal for cellular homeostasis in response to cerebral ischemia. Pharmacological inhibition of HIF-1α may reduce secondary brain damage by targeting post-translational mechanisms associated with its proteasomal degradation and nuclear translocation. This study examined the neuroprotective effects of 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME2), the involved HIF-1α-dependent response, and alternative splicing in exon 14 of HIF-1α (HIF-1α∆Ex14) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in mice. A total of 13,066 first-lactation test-day records of 2,277 Valle del Belice ewes from 17 flocks were used to estimate genetic parameters for somatic cell scores (SCS) and milk production traits, using a repeatability test-day animal model. Heritability estimates were low and ranged from 0.09 to 0.14 for milk, fat, and protein yields, and contents. For SCS, the heritability of 0.14 was relatively high. The repeatabilities were moderate and ranged from 0.29 to 0.47 for milk production traits. The repeatability for SCS was 0.36. Flock-test-day explained a large proportion of the variation for milk production traits, but it did not have a big effect on SCS. The genetic correlations of fat and …

We examined the gastrointestinal helminth fauna of 2 Cuvier's beaked whales, Ziphius cavirostris, stranded on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Information regarding intestinal parasites of this species is provided for the first time. Six helminth taxa were identified. Thirty type II larvae of the nematode Anisakis sp. were found in the stomach and the intestine of both hosts; 2 type I larvae of Anisakis sp. were found in the intestine of 1 host. Lack of association between HLA specificities and Wilms' tumour.

HLA antigen distribution was determined in thirty patients with Wilms' tumour, and their frequencies compared with those of an ethnically matched control population. No statistically significant association was found between any single HLA antigen and Wilms' tumour disease. The value of prospective HLA typing studies, with special respect to genetic aspects, histopathological subgrouping and survival rate of Wilm's tumour patients is discussed.
