Graphical User Interfaces for R
2012
Since R was first launched, it has managed to gain the support of an ever-increasing percentage of academic and professional statisticians. However, the spread of its use among novice and occasional users of statistics have not progressed at the same pace, which can be attributed partially to the lack of a graphical user interface (GUI). Nevertheless, this situation has changed in the last years and there is currently several projects that have added GUIs to R. This article discusses briefly the history of GUIs for data analysis and then introduces the papers submitted to an special issue of the Journal of Statistical Software on GUIs for R.
The impact of user’s availability on On-line Ego Networks: a Facebook analysis
2016
We have defined and implemented a Facebook application to log a Facebook dataset. We have studied and validated the structural properties of the whole dataset and of the Dunbar ego networks. We have analyzed the interactions of the users. The availability of the users in the Dunbar ego networks have been investigated. Our results reveal the presence of the temporal homophily property in the Dunbar ego networks. Online Social Networks (OSNs) are the most popular applications in todays Internet and they have changed the way people interact with each other. Understanding the structural properties of OSNs and, in particular, how users behave when they connect to OSNs is crucial for designing user-c…
Do graphical overviews facilitate or hinder comprehension in hypertext?
2009
Educational hypertexts usually include graphical overviews, conveying the structure of the text schematically with the aim of fostering comprehension. Despite the claims about their relevance, there is currently no consensus on the impact that hypertext overviews have on the reader's comprehension. In the present paper we have explored how hypertext overviews might affect comprehension with regard to (a) the time at which students read the overview and (b) the hypertext difficulty. The results from two eye-tracking studies revealed that reading a graphical overview at the beginning of the hypertext is related to an improvement in the participant's comprehension of quite difficult hypertexts…
The shape of eParticipation:Characterizing an emerging research area
2008
Author's version of an article published in Government Information Quarterly, 25 (2008), 400-428. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.giq.2007.04.007 The phenomenon of eParticipation is receiving increasing attention, demonstrated by recent technology implementations, experiments, government reports, and research programs. Understanding such an emerging field is a complex endeavor because there is no generally agreed upon definition of the field, no clear overview of the research disciplines or methods it draws upon, and because the boundaries of the field are undecided. Using conventional literature review techniques, we identify 131 scientific articles consid…
TV politics showed in Twitter: Media and followers
2015
The aim of this work is to present an ongoing research relating to the use of Twitter by the media; a corpus of 3000 tweets from three TV politic shows are being analized (Los desayunos de TVE, in the public channel TVE1, and Las Mananas Cuatro and Al Rojo Vivo, of private channels Cuatro and La Sexta) and a corpus of 1523 tweets responses produced by followers. The analysis model used is a neuropragmatic based linguistic model, that consider brands of subjectivity and interaction as a direct corollary of the theory of mind.
Audiovisual accessibility on the web: subtitling in the European Parliament
2020
The problems and promises of research into human immunology and autoimmune disease
2012
Translational research in autoimmunity is hampered by a number of hurdles, including a lack of knowledge regarding initiating and pathologically relevant autoantigens, the low frequency of autoreactive pathogenic B and T cells, difficulty in accessing the affected tissue, differences between self-reactive and pathogen-specific lymphocytes, a lack of etiologically relevant preclinical animal models and the heterogeneity of disease presentation. Given the need for biomarkers and new therapeutics, it is imperative that these hurdles be surmounted.
Numerical Model of THz sources and detectors based on Optical Rectification and Electro-Optic Sampling
2013
A model describing a laser based set-up for wideband THz generation and detection is presented. Particular attention is focused on the main broadband phenomena, which occur when THz radiations have to be handled.
Genome-wide analyses reveal population structure and identify candidate genes associated with tail fatness in local sheep from a semi-arid area.
2021
Abstract Under a climate change perspective, the genetic make-up of local livestock breeds showing adaptive traits should be explored and preserved as a priority. We used genotype data from the ovine 50 k Illumina BeadChip for assessing breed autozygosity based on runs of homozygosity (ROH) and fine-scale genetic structure and for detecting genomic regions under selection in 63 Tunisian sheep samples. The average genomic inbreeding coefficients based on ROH were estimated at 0.017, 0.021, and 0.024 for Barbarine (BAR, n = 26), Noire de Thibar (NDT, n = 23), and Queue fine de l'Ouest (QFO, n = 14) breeds, respectively. The genomic relationships among individuals based on identity by state (I…
Layout influence on microwave performance of graphene field effect transistors
2018
The authors report on an in-depth statistical and parametrical investigation on the microwave performance of graphene FETs on sapphire substrate. The devices differ for the gate-drain/source distance and for the gate length, having kept instead the gate width constant. Microwave S -parameters have been measured for the different devices. Their results demonstrate that the cut-off frequency does not monotonically increase with the scaling of the device geometry and that it exists an optimal region in the gate-drain/source and gate-length space which maximises the microwave performance.
