Abstract Introduction In elderly seniors (>80 years), respiratory function may be compromised when, in addition to the presence of comorbidity and loss of mobility, there is also reduced respiratory muscle (RM) strength. The literature has shown that RM training could be an effective method to improve RM function and prevent clinical deterioration, particularly in population with RM weakness. For any exponentially bounded Borel function $g$ the function $u$ defined by $u(t,x)= \mathbb{E}[g(x{+}\sigma W_{T-t})]$ is the stochastic solution of the backward heat equation with terminal condition $g$. Let $u^n(t,x)$ denote the corresponding approximation generated by a simple symmetric random walk with time steps $2T/n$ and space steps $\pm \sigma \sqrt{T/n}$ where $\sigma > 0$. For quite irregular terminal conditions $g$ (bounded variation on compact intervals, locally H\"older continuous) the rate of convergence of $u^n(t,x)$ to $u(t,x)$ is considered, and also the behavior of the error $u^n(t,x)-u(t,x)$ as $t$ tends to $T$

Ergodicity for a stochastic Hodgkin–Huxley model driven by Ornstein–Uhlenbeck type input

We consider a model describing a neuron and the input it receives from its dendritic tree when this input is a random perturbation of a periodic deterministic signal, driven by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The neuron itself is modeled by a variant of the classical Hodgkin-Huxley model. Using the existence of an accessible point where the weak Hoermander condition holds and the fact that the coefficients of the system are analytic, we show that the system is non-degenerate. The existence of a Lyapunov function allows to deduce the existence of (at most a finite number of) extremal invariant measures for the process. (φ, ψ)-weak contractions in intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces

The purpose of this paper is to extend the notion of (phi,psi)-weak contraction to intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces, by using an altering distance function. We obtain common fixed point results in intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces, which generalize several known results from the literature.

To solve a statistical decision problem from a Bayesian viewpoint, the decision maker must specify a probability distribution on the parameter space, his prior distribution. In order to analyze the influence of this prior distribution on the solution of the problem, Bernardo (1981) proposed to compare the results with those that one would obtain by using that prior distribution which maximizes the useful experimental information, thus introducing the concept of reference decision. Then we make use of those results to establish the consistency of several bootstrap procedures in empirical likelihood theory for functional parameters.

The coalescent in population models with time-inhomogeneous environment

AbstractThe coalescent theory, well developed for the class of exchangeable population models with time-homogeneous reproduction law, is extended to a class of population models with time-inhomogeneous environment, where the population size is allowed to vary deterministically with time and where the distribution of the family sizes is allowed to change from generation to generation. A new class of time-inhomogeneous coalescent limit processes with simultaneous multiple mergers arises. Its distribution can be characterized in terms of product integrals.

Electrochemical behavior of layered annulenes

Abstract The cyclic voltammetric behavior of a series of dimeric [14] annulenes was examined and compared with the monomer. The data suggest a signigficant degree of interaction between the annulene rings when a three-carbon chain connects them, little or no interaction with an eight-carbon chain, and weak interaction with a four-carbon chain.

Abstract The mechanism of the reaction of phosphoryl fluoride ( P(O)F) with alcohols in the presence of an amine is fundamentally different from the reaction of phosphoryl chlorides ( P(O)Cl) with primary or secondary amines. The following observations strongly support this proposal: 1. 1H-NMR-, 31P-NMR- and 19F-NMR-spectroscopic investigations show that methyl-phenyl-phosphinicacid-fluoride and n-butylamine form a thermolabile adduct, which yields the methyl-phenyl-phosphinicacid-amide only very slowly. 2.
