Structural factor in bending testing of fivefold twinned nanowires revealed by finite element analysis

2016

In this study, we performed finite element method simulations to investigate the effect of the structure on the elastic response of Ag and Au nanowires (NWs) with a fivefold twinned crystal structure in bending tests. Two different models of a pentagonal NW were created: a 'uniform model' having an isotropic continuous structure and a 'segmented model' consisting of five anisotropic domains. Two asymmetrical mechanical test configurations were simulated: cantilevered beam bending and 3-point bending. The dimensions of the NW, the test configurations, as well as the force and the displacement ranges were based on the previously obtained experimental data. The results of the simulations demon…

Magnetic Anisotropies and Coupling Mechanisms inFe/Mo(110)Nanostripes

2005

Using low-temperature (5 K) spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we have studied the morphology and magnetic properties of monolayer (ML) and double layer (DL) thick Fe nanowires grown by step flow on a Mo(110) single crystal. Magnetic contrast has been obtained using tungsten tips covered by Au/Co thin films. We find that the DL Fe nanowires, similarly to ML Fe nanowires, are perpendicularly magnetized. Because of the dipolar coupling, separated DL Fe nanowires are antiferromagnetically coupled. DL wires that are touching at step edges are ferromagnetically ordered due to direct exchange coupling. We measured the widths of the magnetic domain walls in the ML and DL Fe nanowires. T…

Cyanide-bridged iron(III)-cobalt(II) double zigzag ferromagnetic chains: two new molecular magnetic nanowires.

2003

and opened the perspective of a potential useof 1D magnetic molecular nanowires for information storage.Even though 1D magnetism is a very active area of research, such dynamic behavior was never detected before since it isnot clear how to fulfill experimentally the requirements of aperfect 1D Ising-type chain. This finding prompted us to lookcarefully at 1D systems containing anisotropic elements, suchas cobalt(ii) and low-spin iron(iii) centers that we synthesizedrecently,

Nanostructured anode material for Li-ion batteries

2010

The present paper focuses on a nanostructured SnCo alloy electrochemically prepared by template method in view of its use as anode material alternative to graphite in lithium-ion batteries. The fabrication of SnCo nanowire arrays was carried out by potentiostatic co-deposition of the two metals by using nanostructured anodic alumina membranes as template. Electrochemical tests on lithiation-delithiation of these SnCo electrodes in conventional organic electrolyte (EC:DMC LiPF6) at 30°C showed that their specific capacity was stable for about the first 12 cycles at a value near to the theoretical one for Li22Sn5 and, hence, progressively decayed.

Wave-vector analysis of plasmon-assisted distributed nonlinear photoluminescence along Au nanowires

2020

We report a quantitative analysis of the wavevector diagram emitted by nonlinear photoluminescence generated by a tightly focused pulsed laser beam and distributed along Au nanowire via the mediation of surface plasmon polaritions. The nonlinear photoluminescence is locally excited at key locations along the nanowire in order to understand the different contributions constituting the emission pattern measured in a conjugate Fourier plane of the microscope. Polarization-resolved measurements reveal that the nanowire preferentially emits nonlinear photoluminescence polarized transverse to the long axis at close to the detection limit wavevectors with a small azimuthal spread in comparison to …

<title>Metallic and semiconducting nanowires: properties and architectures</title>

2003

Nanowires are expected to play an important role in future electronic, optical devices and nanoelectromechanical devices. Measuring the electrical and mechanical properties of nanowires is however a difficult task due to their small dimensions. Here we report the use of an in-situ microscopy technique, which combines transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with scanning probe microscopy (SPM), to investigate the electrical and mechanical properties of metallic and semiconductor nanowires. Additionally, in this paper we describe a novel approach for synthesizing mesoporous silicas with tunable pore diameters, wall thickness and pore spacings that can be used as tempates for the assembly of se…

Real-time measurements of sliding friction and elastic properties of ZnO nanowires inside a scanning electron microscope

2011

Abstract A real-time nanomanipulation technique inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to investigate the elastic and frictional (tribological) properties of zinc oxide nanowires (NWs). A NW was translated over a surface of an oxidised silicon wafer using a nanomanipulator with a glued atomic-force microscopic tip. The shape of the NW elastically deformed during the translation was used to determine the distributed kinetic friction force. The same NW was then positioned half-suspended on edges of trenches cut by a focused ion beam through a silicon wafer. In order to measure Young’s modulus, the NW was bent by pushing it at the free end with the tip, and the interaction f…

Morphological evolution of InAs/InP quantum wires through aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy

2010

Evolution of the size, shape and composition of self-assembled InAs/InP quantum wires through the Stranski–Krastanov transition has been determined by aberration-corrected Z-contrast imaging. High resolution compositional maps of the wires in the initial, intermediate and final formation stages are presented. (001) is the main facet at their very initial stage of formation, which is gradually reduced in favour of {114} or {118}, ending with the formation of mature quantum wires with {114} facets. Significant changes in wire dimensions are measured when varying slightly the amount of InAs deposited. These results are used as input parameters to build three-dimensional models that allow calcu…

Crystal growth of ZnO micro and nanostructures by PVT on c-sapphire and amorphous quartz substrates

2010

Abstract ZnO micro and nanostructures in the form of tripods, grains, arrows and wires have been grown at temperatures as low as 500–300  ∘ C by a vapour transport method without catalysis and using a well selected value of the carrier gas flow. A transition state between grains and nanowires is reported being characterized by arrow-like structures which are constituted by a pyramidal head and a tail that is growing from the basal plane of the head. In order to understand the effect of growth conditions on the morphology of micro and nanostructures, an analysis of temperature and species concentration conditions has been carried out. In addition two different kinds of substrates have been u…
