Convergence of Cortical and Sensory Driver Inputs on Single Thalamocortical Cells

Ascending and descending information is relayed through the thalamus via strong, "driver" pathways. According to our current knowledge, different driver pathways are organized in parallel streams and do not interact at the thalamic level. Using an electron microscopic approach combined with optogenetics and in vivo physiology, we examined whether driver inputs arising from different sources can interact at single thalamocortical cells in the rodent somatosensory thalamus (nucleus posterior, POm). Synaptic communication is a dynamic process that is key to the regulation of neuronal excitability and information processing in the brain. To date, however, the molecular signals controlling synaptic dynamics have been poorly understood. Membrane-derived bioactive phospholipids are potential candidates to control short-term tuning of synaptic signaling, a plastic event essential for information processing at both the cellular and neuronal network levels in the brain. An old method for good new cells

The aim of this work was to demonstrate a greater number of viable cells using a micro-surgical in-situ perfusion to collect rat pancreata compared with the pancreas after exsanguination. We used 3 groups of 20 rats. Perfusion was performed by selective cannulation of the left common iliac artery with administration of UW solution at 4 degrees C. Collected pancreata were digested and cells separated by Ficoll gradient were placed in culture to permit adhesion to dishes. Cells were characterized and tested for viability. We observed a gain of about 14% in the number of viable cells compared with those obtained after exsanguination (P < .001 by chi-square).

Background and Purpose— Ultrasound-accelerated thrombolysis is a promising approach toward acute stroke treatment. In previous in vitro studies, we demonstrated enhanced thrombus destruction induced by 20-kHz ultrasound. Recent reports supported the existence of stem cells in adult hearts. However, phenotype and localization of these cells have not been completely described and it is unknown if cardiac regenerative potential differs from one subject to another. The aims of our work were to identify different populations of cardiac stem cells by the analysis of specific markers and to evaluate the expression variability of these markers in 12 adult rat hearts. Time-course of GDNF and its receptor expression after brain injury in the rat

Abstract The aim of the present work was to perform, by in situ hybridization, a time-course analysis of the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and its receptor mRNA expression in two models of brain injury in the rat: (a) excitotoxic lesion by ibotenic acid injection in the hippocampal formation; (b) mechanical lesion by needle insertion through the cerebral cortex including the white matter of the corpus callosum.
