Work coordination, which here refers to organizing, planning, discussing, and negotiating work, is done through social interaction. Because coordination is essential to work quality and well-being at work, it is important to understand the processes that construct work coordination. In recent working life studies, professional agency is seen as pivotal to the development of work communities and work organizations. The aim of this study was to compare the possibilities of experiencing positive well-being in call centers and other service sector work. The article focuses on the prevalence of working conditions (job demands, autonomy, and social support) in call centers and at other service sector workplaces and how these factors are related to work engagement. Diagnostic yield of ink-jet prints from digital radiographs for the assessment of approximal carious lesions: ROC-analysis

Abstract Aims To investigate the diagnostic quality of different quality, individually calibrated ink-jet printers for the very challenging dental radiographic task of approximal carious lesion detection. Materials and methods A test-pattern evaluating resolution, contrast and homogeneity of the ink-jet prints was developed. 50 standardized dental radiographs each showing two neighbouring teeth in natural contact were printed on glossy paper with calibrated, randomly selected ink-jet printers (Canon S520 and iP4500, Epson Stylus Photo R2400). An Empirical Study of Performance Appraisal and Career Opportunities

Using survey data from a large international oil company, this econometric study explores the perceptions ofperformance appraisal and career opportunities on one hand, and how this is dependent on variation in propertiesand characteristics of the local working environment on the other hand. Perceptions indicate that performanceand payoff are better balanced among women than among men. Training new electronics engineers presents several major challenges. This paper proposes a new approach for practical lessons in second-level analog electronics, where students get a closer view of real-world practices in electronic engineering. The authors describe and evaluate a more dynamic way of teaching practical lessons in analog electronics in the first year of an electronic engineering degree. The method consists of creating a virtual company that contracts students to develop prototypes. On the Reception of Grassmann’s Work in Germany during the 1870’s

It has often been remarked that Grassmann’s mathematics was not widely appreciated during his lifetime. Although awareness of the dimensions of his achievements began to spread in the early 1870’s, even in Germany relatively few mathematicians appear to have been well acquainted with either the original 1844 edition of Grassmann’s Ausdehnungslehre or the mathematically more accessible edition of 1862. The main reasons for this weak and rather delayed reception have been described often enough---Grassmann’s isolated working environment and his nearly impenetrable language---but there are a number of related aspects that still deserve closer consideration.1
