Does omitting the accent mark in a word affect sentence reading? Evidence from Spanish

2021

Lexical stress in multisyllabic words is consistent in some languages (e.g., first syllable in Finnish), but it is variable in others (e.g., Spanish, English). To help lexical processing in a transparent language like Spanish, scholars have proposed a set of rules specifying which words require an accent mark indicating lexical stress in writing. However, recent word recognition using that lexical decision showed that word identification times were not affected by the omission of a word’s accent mark in Spanish. To examine this question in a paradigm with greater ecological validity, we tested whether omitting the accent mark in a Spanish word had a deleterious effect during silent sentenc…

Los géneros discursivos y las secuencias didácticas: el lugar de los ejemplos prototípicos en la enseñanza y aprendizaje de la escritura

2018

[EN] From a social perspective, the aim of writing teaching is for students to be able to understand and write a great diversity of discursive genres, allowing them to behave as reflexive and critical citizens in different social spheres. In the process of mastery of each genre, the mental representation of the text is key, which acts as a regulating element of writing in different phases. This article shows the difficulties of the students to appropriate a specific genre (a book review), based on the data of a classroom research with students of 3rd ESO that addresses the writing of reviews through a didactic sequence including, as a regulatory element, prototypical examples of the genre. …

Poesía, género y educación: de Mistral y Storni a Luque, Lanseros y Berbel

2021

"Writing biochips": high-resolution droplet-to-droplet manufacturing of analytical platforms.

2022

The development of high-resolution molecular printing allows the engineering of analytical platforms enabling applications at the interface between chemistry and biology, i.e. in biosensing, electronics, single-cell biology, and point-of-care diagnostics. Their successful implementation stems from the combination of large area printing at resolutions from sub-100 nm up to macroscale, whilst controlling the composition and the volume of the ink, and reconfiguring the deposition features in due course. Similarly to handwriting pens, the engineering of continuous writing systems tackles the issue of the tedious ink replenishment between different printing steps. To this aim, this review articl…

Process specification and verification

1996

Graph grammars provide a very convenient specification tool for distributed systems of processes. This paper addresses the problem how properties of such specifications can be proven. It shows a connection between algebraic graph rewrite rules and temporal (trace) logic via the graph expressions of [2]. Statements concerning the global behavior can be checked by local reasoning.

“How Did Child of Light Save Me?” Engagement with a Children’s Multimodal Game Narrative as Adult Play and Self-Therapy

2021

This chapter investigates the online reception of the Canadian video game Child of Light (Ubisoft, Child of Light. Montreal: Ubisoft Studios. Video Game, 2014) as a space of encounter between imaginary childhoods and experienced adulthoods. Child of Light is a well-selling video game involving a conventional fairy-tale narrative about a young princess Aurora battling against darkness with a party of companions. The game contains narrative elements typical of children’s stories but has been popular among adult players. The focus of this chapter is on a specific case study: an adult male professional game reviewer and his publicly shared online life narrative, in which he discusses his real-l…

The body in adolescent diaries. The case of Karen Horney.

2003

The role of the body and its functions in the psychic life of the individual has occupied a central place in psychoanalytic thinking and writing. Developmentally, the body and the ego as a psychic organization have an integral, mutual relationship which becomes particularly important during adolescence, when the body matures physically while at the same time cognition, self-reflection, and social relations develop. This contribution presents results of the content analyses, focusing on the body, of 40 diaries written by twenty women during their adolescent years, compared with Karen Horney's adolescent diaries. In contrary to these diaries of the other young women, Karen Horney's adolescent…

Students in higher education with reading and writing difficulties

2015

The aim of this study is to explore adult students’ descriptions and understandings of their reading and writing difficulties, and to describe the ways they are copying with them. In higher level studies, information is typically gained by reading and giving evidence of knowledge acquisition in writing. When students have difficulties with these essential academic skills, studying and lifelong learning can be hard work as well as time-consuming. General understanding of dyslexia and reading difficulties at the higher education level has improved, although considerable ambiguity remains about what these mean in practice. This is a qualitative, interview-based study that seeks to improve our …
