Polarized Fourier transform infrared microscopy as a tool for structural analysis of adsorbates in molecular sieves

1992

Using FTIR microscopy with polarized IR radiation on silicalite I single crystals fully loaded with p-xylene, the existence of an ordered adsorbate could be proven for the first time by IR spectroscopy. By analyzing the polarized absorption bands the orientation of the p-xylene molecules relative to the host structure could be determined. The results agree well with structural data obtained from X-ray diffraction experiments. These first results suggest that polarized IR microscopy could develop into a powerful tool for the analysis of adsorbate structures, assisting in complete structure resolution by diffraction techniques

DICHROISM IN ANGLE-RESOLVED PHOTOEMISSION FROM Pt(111)

2002

The angular dependence of the circular dichroism in photoemission from Pt(111) was investigated for excitation with VUV and soft X-ray radiation. VUV excitation was used to probe band structure and the circular dichroism for valence band emission. The measurements are compared to full relativistic single step photoemission calculations. XPS was used to investigate the circular dichroism in emission from the 4f core level. In this case, the dichroism is induced by photoelectron diffraction. First results from single step core level calculations are compared to the experimental observations.

In situ and time resolved study of the - transition in nanometric particles

2007

In situ and real-time study of the {gamma} to {alpha}-Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} transition is carried out on the H10 beamline at LURE (France). {gamma}-Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles are synthesized by soft chemistry. These particles have an average diameter evaluated by X-ray diffraction of 9{+-}1nm and a specific surface area of 116m{sup 2}g{sup -1}. The size of produced {alpha}-Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles is determined by in situ and time resolved X-ray diffraction measurements at different temperatures. An amazing evolution of size with time is revealed: an abrupt doubling of the {alpha}-Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} particle size is observed whatever the heating temperature. Some assumptions are given in ord…

Snapshots of a solid-state transformation: Coexistence of three phases trapped in one crystal

2016

Crystal-to-crystal transformations have been crucial in the understanding of solid-state processes, since these may be studied in detail by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) techniques. The description of the mechanisms and potential intermediates of those processes remains very challenging. In fact, solid-state transient states have rarely been observed, at least to a sufficient level of detail. We have investigated the process of guest extrusion from the non-porous molecular material [Fe(bpp)(HL)](ClO)·1.5CHO (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; HL = 2,6-bis(5-(2-methoxyphenyl)-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; CHO = acetone), which occurs through ordered diffusion of acetone in a c…

Structure determination of thin CoFe films by anomalous x-ray diffraction

2012

This work reports on the investigation of structure-property relationships in thin CoFe films grown on MgO. Because of the very similar scattering factors of Fe and Co, it is not possible to distinguish the random A2 (W-type) structure from the ordered B2 (CsCl-type) structure with commonly used x-ray sources. Synchrotron radiation based anomalous x-ray diffraction overcomes this problem. It is shown that as grown thin films and 300 K post annealed films exhibit the A2 structure with a random distribution of Co and Fe. In contrast, films annealed at 400 K adopt the ordered B2 structure.

<title>In-situ x-ray absorption fine structure and x-ray diffraction studies of hydrogen intercalation in tungsten oxides</title>

1997

We present in-situ x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) (at the W L 3 -edge) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of hydrogen intercalation into stable monoclinic (m-WO 3 ) and metastable hexagonal (h-WO 3 ) and cubic (c-WO 3 ) phases of tungsten oxide. The analysis of XAFS and XRD data allowed us to reconstruct the local environment around tungsten ions in the first coordination shell. The obtained results are compared with the existing structural models.

X-ray diffraction study of CF3Cl monolayers adsorbed on graphite (001)

1988

X-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on mono- and submonolayers of CF3Cl physisorbed on the (001) surfaces of exfoliated graphite. Five quasi-twodimensional solid phases including the commensurate 2×2 phase, an electrically ordered phase and a disordered incommensurate phase have been observed. A phase diagram is proposed and the various phase transitions are discussed.

X‐ray characterization of CdO thin films grown on a ‐, c ‐, r ‐ and m ‐plane sapphire by metalorganic vapour phase‐epitaxy

2005

CdO thin films have been grown on a-plane (110), c-plane (0001), r-plane (012) and m-plane (100) sapphire substrates by metalorganic vapour-phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The effects of different substrate orientations on the structural properties of the films have been analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, including θ-2θ scans, pole figures and rocking curves. (111), (001) and (110) orientations are found on a-, r-, and m-sapphire respectively, while films deposited on c-plane exhibit an orientation in which no low-index crystal plane is parallel to the sample surface. The recorded pole figures have allowed determining the epitaxial relationships between films and substrates, as well as the pres…

Electric properties of KTiOPO4and NaTiOPO4from temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction

1999

Single crystals of KTiOPO4(KTP) and NaTiOPO4(NaTP) show pronounced pyroelectric behaviour. In order to determine the origin of this property on an atomic scale, X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out at several temperatures between 100 and 600 K. Modelling of the electron density and the evolution of the structure as a function of temperature has enabled the determination of values for the spontaneous polarization of the compounds and the pyroelectric coefficient of KTP, principally due to the alkaline-ion displacements with a value of 2.0 nC cm−2 K−1. Structure modifications, compared with NaTiOPO4, and the calculation of the electrostatic potential explain the anisotropic be…
