Effect of gamma radiation on thermostimulated exoelectron emission from Gd2O3 films
2020
Abstract The effect of gamma irradiation on Gd2O3 films was studied using the thermostimulated exoelectron emission (TSEE) technique. The films were deposited on a glass and Si/SiO2 substrates using an extraction-pyrolytic method. Crystalline structure, chemical composition, film thickness and surface morphology were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films were irradiated by 10 MeV gamma photons and TSEE was measured from the irradiated films. It was found that gamma irradiation decreases TSEE intensity and the area below TSEE spectral curves. A linear correlati…
Measuring Inaccessible Residual Stresses Using Multiple Methods and Superposition
2010
The traditional contour method maps a single component of residual stress by cutting a body carefully in two and measuring the contour of the cut surface. The cut also exposes previously inaccessible regions of the body to residual stress measurement using a variety of other techniques, but the stresses have been changed by the relaxation after cutting. In this paper, it is shown that superposition of stresses measured post-cutting with results from the contour method analysis can determine the original (pre-cut) residual stresses. The general superposition theory using Bueckner’s principle is developed and limitations are discussed. The procedure is experimentally demonstrated by determini…
Equation of state and high-pressure/high-temperature phase diagram of magnesium
2014
The phase diagram of magnesium has been investigated to 211 GPa at 300 K, and to 105 GPa at 4500 K, by using a combination of x-ray diffraction and resistive and laser heating. The ambient pressure hcp structure is found to start transforming to the bcc structure at ∼45 GPa, with a large region of phase-coexistence that becomes smaller at higher temperatures. The bcc phase is stable to the highest pressures reached. The hcp-bcc phase boundary has been studied on both compression and decompression, and its slope is found to be negative and steeper than calculations have previously predicted. The laser-heating studies extend the melting curve of magnesium to 105 GPa and suggest that, at the h…
Melting curve and phase diagram of vanadium under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions
2019
Melting curve and phase diagram of vanadium under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the melting curve and the structural behavior of vanadium under extreme pressure and temperature. We performed powder x-ray-diffraction experiments up to 120 GPa and 4000 K, determining the phase boundary of the body-centered cubic-to-rhombohedral transition and melting temperatures at different pressures. Melting temperatures have also been established from the observation of temperature plateaus during laser heating, and the results from the density-functional theory calculations. Results obtained from our experiments and calculations a…
Experimentally constrained density-functional calculations of the amorphous structure of the prototypical phase-change materialGe2Sb2Te5
2009
Phase change materials involve the rapid and reversible transition between nanoscale amorphous $(a\text{\ensuremath{-}})$ and crystalline $(c\text{\ensuremath{-}})$ spots in a polycrystalline film and play major roles in the multimedia world, including nonvolatile computer memory. The materials of choice are alloys of Ge, Sb, and Te, e.g., ${\text{Ge}}_{2}{\text{Sb}}_{2}{\text{Te}}_{5}$ (GST) in digital versatile disk--random access memory. There has been much speculation about the structure of $a\text{\ensuremath{-}}$ GST, but no model has yet received general acceptance. Here we optimize the structure by combining the results of density-functional calculations with high-energy x-ray diffr…
Stability of FeVO4 under Pressure: An X-ray Diffraction and First-Principles Study
2018
The high-pressure behavior of the crystalline structure FeVO4 has been studied by means of X-ray diffraction using a diamond-anvil cell and first-principles calculations. The experiments were carried out up to a pressure of 12.3 GPa, until now the highest pressure reached to study an FeVO4 compound. High-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements show that the triclinic P1 (FeVO4-I) phase remains stable up to ≈3 GPa; then a first-order phase transition to a new monoclinic polymorph of FeVO4 (FeVO4-II′) with space group C2/m is observed, having an α-MnMoO4-type structure. A second first-order phase transition is observed around 5 GPa toward the monoclinic (P2/c) wolframite-type FeVO4-IV structu…
GaS and InSe equations of state from single crystal diffraction
2007
We have performed single crystal angle dispersive X-ray diffraction at high pressure in order to investigate the GaS and InSe equations of state. We situate the transition from β-GaS to GaS-II at 2 7 0 3. ± . GPa. In the InSe experiment we locate the beginning of the phase transition at 7.6 ± 0.6 GPa. The equations of state of β-GaS ( 0 43 27 0 06V = . ± . Å 3 , 37 2 GPaB = ± , 5 2B = .¢ ), GaS-II ( 0 42 4 0 2V = . ± . Å 3 , 50 3 GPaB = ± and 4 3 0 3B = . ± .¢ ) and γ-InSe ( 0 58 4 0 2V = . ± . Å 3 , 24 3 GPaB = ± and 8 6 0 8B = . ± .¢ ) are discussed and compared with the results of an ab-initio calculation.
Observation of the Cinnabar Phase in ZnSe at High Pressure
2002
In this paper we describe the results of an energy dispersive X-ray diffraction experiment carried out in the ZnSe 1 m x Te x alloy and pure ZnSe under high pressure. In the downstroke the cinnabar phase is observed between the rocksalt and the zincblende phases. The analysis of the whole series of compositions ( x =0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2) enables us to establish its lattice parameters in ZnSe ( a =3.785 + and c =8.844 + at 10.5 GPa). The X-ray diffraction pattern simulation suggests that the internal parameters u and v are close to 0.5, indicating that the cinnabar phase in ZnSe is similar to that observed in GaAs and ZnTe. The cinnabar's stability range decreases as the Te content is reduce…
Structural and vibrational properties of CdAl2S4 under high pressure: Experimental and theoretical approach
2014
The behavior of defect chalcopyrite CdAl2S4 at high pressures and ambient temperature has been investigated in a joint experimental and theoretical study. High-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements were complemented with theoretical ab initio calculations. The equation of state and pressure dependences of the structural parameters of CdAl2S4 were determined and compared to those of other AB(2)X(4) ordered-vacancy compounds. The pressure dependence of the Raman-active mode frequencies is reported, as well as the theoretical phonon dispersion curves and phonon density of states at 1 atm. Our measurements suggest that defect chalcopyrite CdAl2S4 undergoes a phase transit…
High-pressure phase transformations in NdVO4 under hydrostatic, conditions: a structural powder x-ray diffraction study
2019
Room temperature angle dispersive powder x-ray diffraction experiments on zircon-type NdVO4 were performed for the first time under quasi-hydrostatic conditions up to 24.5 GPa. The sample undergoes two phase transitions at 6.4 and 19.9 GPa. Our results show that the first transition is a zircon-to-scheelite-type phase transition, which has not been reported before, and contradicts previous non-hydrostatic experiments. In the second transition, NdVO4 transforms into a fergusonite-type structure, which is a monoclinic distortion of scheelite-type. The compressibility and axial anisotropy of the different polymorphs of NdVO4 are reported. A direct comparison of our results with former experime…
