Effect of surface finishing on the oxidation behaviour of a ferritic stainless steel

2017

Abstract The corrosion behaviour and the oxidation mechanism of a ferritic stainless steel, K41X (AISI 441), were evaluated at 800 °C in water vapour hydrogen enriched atmosphere. Mirror polished samples were compared to as-rolled K41X material. Two different oxidation behaviours were observed depending on the surface finishing: a protective double (Cr,Mn) 3 O 4 /Cr 2 O 3 scale formed on the polished samples whereas external Fe 3 O 4 and (Cr,Fe) 2 O 3 oxides grew on the raw steel. Moreover, isotopic marker experiments combined with SIMS analyses revealed different growth mechanisms. The influence of surface finishing on the corrosion products and growth mechanisms was apprehended by means o…

The Matrix Effect and Application of the Multi-Parameter Optimization Method for X-Ray Spectrometric Determination of the Quantitative Composition of…

2018

Determining the quantitative composition of clay samples with X-ray fluorescent spectrometry is complicated because of the matrix effect, in which any element can increase or decrease the analytical signals of other elements. In order to predict the properties of clays, it is essential to know their precise chemical composition. Therefore, using the standard addition method was determined calibration and empirical influence coefficients, as well as the true composition of the elements. Farther, these coefficients were used to correct the matrix effect and develop a multi-parameter optimization method. It was determined that in clay samples, consisting of Si, Al, Fe, K, Mg, Ca, Na and Ti oxi…

Static and dynamic structure of $ZnWO_4$ nanoparticles

2011

Abstract Static and dynamic structure of ZnWO 4 nanoparticles, synthesized by co-precipitation technique, has been studied by temperature dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Zn K-edge and W L 3 -edge. Complementary experimental techniques, such as x-ray powder diffraction, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies, have been used to understand the variation of vibrational, optical, and structural properties of nanoparticles, compared to microcrystalline ZnWO 4 . Our results indicate that the structure of nanoparticles experiences strong relaxation leading to the significant distortions of the WO 6 and ZnO 6 octahedra, being responsible for the changes in optical and vibrational …

X-Ray studies on optical and structural properties of ZnO nanostructured thin films

2006

Abstract X-ray absorption near-edge fine structure (XANES) studies have been carried out on nanostructured ZnO thin films prepared by atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition (APCVD). Films have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical luminescence spectroscopy exciting with laser light (PL) or X-ray (XEOL). According to XRD measurements, all the APCVD samples reveal a highly (002) oriented crystalline structure. The samples have different thickness (less than 1 μm) and show significant shifts of the PL and XEOL bands in the visible region. Zn K-edge XANES spectra were recorded using synchrotron radiation at BM08 of ESRF (France), by detecting photoluminescence yield…

X-ray diffraction Warren–Averbach mullite analysis in whiteware porcelains: influence of kaolin raw material

2018

ABSTRACTCompositional and microstructural analysis of mullites in porcelain whitewares obtained by the firing of two blends of identical triaxial composition using a kaolin B consisting of ‘higher-crystallinity’ kaolinite or a finer halloysitic kaolin M of lower crystal order was performed. No significant changes in the average Al2O3 contents (near the stoichiometric composition 3:2) of the mullites were observed. Fast and slow firing at the same temperature using B or M kaolin yielded different mullite contents. The Warren–Averbach method showed increase of the D110 mullite crystallite size and crystallite size distributions with small shifts to greater values with increasing firing temper…

Shallow and deep trap levels in X-ray irradiated β-Ga2O3: Mg

2019

Abstract The results of the investigation of thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) and photoconductivity (PC) of the X-ray irradiated undoped and Mg2+ doped β-Ga2O3 single crystals are presented. Three low-temperature peaks at 116 K, 147 K and 165 K are observed on the TSL glow curves of undoped crystals. The high-temperature TSL peaks at 354 K and 385 K are dominant in Mg2+ doped crystals. The correlation between doping with Mg2+ ions and the local energy levels of the intrinsic structural defects of β-Ga2O3, which are responsible for the TSL peaks and PC, is established. The nature of TSL peaks and the appropriate photoconductivity excitation bands are discussed.

Development of hard x-ray photoelectron SPLEED-based spectrometer applicable for probing of buried magnetic layer valence states

2016

Abstract A novel design of high-voltage compatible polarimeter for spin-resolved hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (Spin-HAXPES) went into operation at beamline BL09XU of SPring-8 in Hyogo, Japan. The detector is based on the well-established principle of electron diffraction from a W(001) single-crystal at a scattering energy of 103.5 eV. It's special feature is that it can be operated at a high negative bias potential up to 10 kV, necessary to access the HAXPES range. The polarimeter is operated behind a large hemispherical analyzer (Scienta R-4000). It was optimized for high transmission of the transfer optics. A delay-line detector (20 mm dia.) is positioned at the exit plane of the…

Broadband Ultrahigh-Resolution Spectroscopy of Particle-Induced X Rays: Extending the Limits of Nondestructive Analysis

2016

Nondestructive analysis (NDA) based on x-ray emission is widely used, for example, in the semiconductor and concrete industries. Here, we demonstrate significant quantitative and qualitative improvements in broadband x-ray NDA by combining particle-induced emission with detection based on superconducting microcalorimeter arrays. We show that the technique offers great promise in the elemental analysis of thin-film and bulk samples, especially in the difficult cases where tens of different elements with nearly overlapping emission lines have to be identified down to trace concentrations. We demonstrate the efficiency and resolving capabilities by spectroscopy of several complex multielement …

Spectroscopic study of the electric field induced valence change of Fe-defect centers in SrTiO(3)

2011

The electrochemical changes induced by an electric field in Fe-doped SrTiO(3) have been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES and EXAFS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Raman spectroscopy. A detailed study of the Fe dopant in the regions around the anode and cathode reveals new insights into the local structure and valence state of Fe in SrTiO(3) single crystals. The ab initio full multiple-scattering XANES calculations give an evidence of the oxygen vacancy presence in the first coordination shell of iron. Differences in the length and disorder of the Fe-O bonds as extracted from EXAFS are correlated to the unequivocal identification of the defect type by compleme…

Tetrahedral versus octahedral Mn site coordination in wurtzite and rocksalt Zn1−xMnxO investigated by means of XAS experiments under high pressure

2007

Abstract We present the results of x-ray absorption measurements carried out in Zn 1− x Mn x O thin films under high pressure. The Mn environment remains essentially the same for nominal Mn concentrations given by x = 0.05 , 0.1, 0.15 and 0.25. Both the XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) and EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) indicate that Mn occupies the Zn site, being surrounded by four oxygen atoms at 2.02±0.01 A. The substitutional hypothesis is reinforced by comparing the differences between the ambient (wurtzite) and high pressure (rocksalt) spectra, which correspond to tetrahedral and octahedral Mn environments.
