Visualization of Parameter Sensitivity of 2D Time-Dependent Flow

2018

In this paper, we present an approach to analyze 1D parameter spaces of time-dependent flow simulation ensembles. By extending the concept of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent to the ensemble domain, i.e., to the parameter that gives rise to the ensemble, we obtain a tool for quantitative analysis of parameter sensitivity both in space and time. We exemplify our approach using 2D synthetic examples and computational fluid dynamics ensembles.

Ergodicity and limit theorems for degenerate diffusions with time periodic drift. Application to a stochastic Hodgkin−Huxley model

2016

We formulate simple criteria for positive Harris recurrence of strongly degenerate stochastic differential equations with smooth coefficients on a state space with certain boundary conditions. The drift depends on time and space and is periodic in the time argument. There is no time dependence in the diffusion coefficient. Control systems play a key role, and we prove a new localized version of the support theorem. Beyond existence of some Lyapunov function, we only need one attainable inner point of full weak Hoermander dimension. Our motivation comes from a stochastic Hodgkin−Huxley model for a spiking neuron including its dendritic input. This input carries some deterministic periodic si…

Stability of a stochastic SIR system

2005

Abstract We propose a stochastic SIR model with or without distributed time delay and we study the stability of disease-free equilibrium. The numerical simulation of the stochastic SIR model shows that the introduction of noise modifies the threshold of system for an epidemic to occur and the threshold stochastic value is found.

Lyapunov exponent and topological entropy plateaus in piecewise linear maps

2013

We consider a two-parameter family of piecewise linear maps in which the moduli of the two slopes take different values. We provide numerical evidence of the existence of some parameter regions in which the Lyapunov exponent and the topological entropy remain constant. Analytical proof of this phenomenon is also given for certain cases. Surprisingly however, the systems with that property are not conjugate as we prove by using kneading theory.

Random walk approach to the analytic solution of random systems with multiplicative noise—The Anderson localization problem

2006

We discuss here in detail a new analytical random walk approach to calculating the phase-diagram for spatially extended systems with multiplicative noise. We use the Anderson localization problem as an example. The transition from delocalized to localized states is treated as a generalized diffusion with a noise-induced first-order phase transition. The generalized diffusion manifests itself in the divergence of averages of wavefunctions (correlators). This divergence is controlled by the Lyapunov exponent $\gamma$, which is the inverse of the localization length, $\xi=1/\gamma$. The appearance of the generalized diffusion arises due to the instability of a fundamental mode corresponding to…

Hybrid Modelling and Control of a Class of Power Converters With Triangular-Carrier PWM Inputs

2021

In this paper, a new control design procedure for a class of power converters based on hybrid dynamical systems theory is presented. The continuous-time dynamics, as voltage and current signals, and discretetime dynamics, as the on-off state of the switches, are captured with a hybrid model. This model avoids the use of averaged and approximated models and includes the PWM as well as the sample-and-hold mechanism, commonly used in the industry. Then, another simplified hybrid system, whose trajectories match with the original one, is selected to design the controller and to analyse stability properties. Finally, an estimation of the chattering in steady state of the voltage and current sign…

A sustainable replacement for TiO2 in photocatalyst construction materials: Hydroxyapatite-based photocatalytic additives, made from the valorisation…

2018

The use of waste materials and by-products in building materials is of increasing importance to improve sustainability in construction, as is the incorporation of photocatalytic materials to both combat atmospheric pollution and protect the structures and façades. This work reports the innovative use of photocatalytic hydroxyapatite (HAp) based powders, derived from Atlantic codfish bone wastes, as an additive to natural hydraulic lime mortars. HAp is the main component of bone, and hence is non-toxic and biocompatible. This is the first time that such a calcium phosphate-based photocatalyst, or indeed any fish/marine derived wastes, have been added to building materials. A key factor is th…

On the status of Mabokopithecus clarki

1985

The discovery of a second specimen of Mabokopithecus clarki at Maboko, Western Kenya, has allowed the reassessment of this enigmatic genus and species. The new specimen, unlike the holotype is complete and undamaged, which dispels the uncertainty about the morphology of the distal part of the tooth, a fact that has always hindered proper assessment of the holotype. It is suggested that the two teeth now assigned to the taxon are teratogenic lower molars of Kenyapithecus africanus . The record of the family Oreopithecidae at Maboko based on Mabokopithecus can now be deleted; only to be replaced by abundant records of a new genus of Oreopithecidae quite different in morphology from Mabokopith…

Preparation, characterization and in vitro test of composites poly-lactic acid/hydroxyapatite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

2018

Abstract In this work, the possibility to produce composite Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/Hydroxyapatite (HA) porous scaffolds via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) for bone tissue engineering applications was investigated. Several PLLA/HA wt/wt ratios (95/5, 90/10, 70/30, 50/50, 34/66) were tested and the as-obtained scaffolds were characterized via Scanning Electron Microscopy, Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis, Gas Pycnometry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and mechanical compression test. Morphological analysis revealed an open structure with interconnected pores and HA particles embedded in the polymer matrix. Finally, cell cultures were carried out into t…

Distributed Consensus for Discrete-Time Directed Networks of Multiagents with Time-Delays and Random Communication Links

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/158731 Open Access This paper is concerned with the leader-following consensus problem in mean-square for a class of discrete-time multiagent systems. The multiagent systems under consideration are the directed and contain arbitrary discrete time-delays. The communication links are assumed to be time-varying and stochastic. It is also assumed that some agents in the network are well informed and act as leaders, and the others are followers. By introducing novel Lyapunov functionals and employing some new analytical techniques, sufficient conditi…
