Gas assisted mechanical expression (GAME) for the selective recovery of lipophilic and hydrophilic compounds from olive kernel
2017
Abstract This work is devoted to valorize olive kernel; a by-product produced during olive oil extraction process. For this purpose, aqueous liquid solid extraction (LSE), mechanical expression (ME), supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) and gas assisted mechanical expression (GAME), processes were compared when applied separately or consequently (ME + GAME), in terms of total phenolic compound (TPC) and oil recovery yields. Results showed that although the high extraction yields of TPC using LSE (61.4 ± 1.3%), the extraction process is economically not viable. However, it was demonstrated that applying ME (1 h at 30 MPa) followed by GAME (1 h at 30 MPa ME and 10 MPa SC-CO2 pressures) allowed recoveri…
Aqueous nonionic copolymer-functionalized laponite clay. A thermodynamic and spectrophotometric study to characterize its behavior toward an organic …
2006
The affinity of functionalized Laponite clay toward an organic material in the aqueous phase was explored. Functionalization was performed by using triblock copolymers based on ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) units that are EO(11)PO(16)EO(11) (L35) and PO(8)EO(23)PO(8) (10R5). Phenol (PhOH) was chosen as organic compound, which represents a contaminant prototype. To this purpose, densities and enthalpies of mixing as well as PhOH UV-absorption spectra were determined. The enthalpy and the spectrophotometry revealed PhOH-Laponite interactions whereas the volume did not. It emerged that the area occupied by PhOH on the Laponite surface is equal to that computed from the partial m…
Midinfrared FT-IR as a Tool for Monitoring Herbaceous Biomass Composition and Its Conversion to Furfural
2015
A semiquantitative analysis by means of midinfrared FT-IR spectroscopy was tuned for the simultaneous determination of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in industrial crops such as giant reed (Arundo donaxL.) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatumL.). Ternary mixtures of pure cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin were prepared and a direct correlation area/concentration was achieved for cellulose and lignin, whereas indirect correlations were found for hemicellulose quantification. Good correspondences between the values derived from our model and those reported in the literature or obtained according to the official Van Soest method were ascertained. Average contents of 40–45% of cellulose, 2…
A facile microsynthesis of 14C-labelled picene
1984
Microscale Wittig olefination of commercially available [7-14C]-benzal dehyde of high specific radioactivity with aryl bromomethyl phosphonium salt and subsequent oxidative photocyclisation affords pure 14C-labelled picene in efficient yield.
High chemoselectivity of CS dipolarophile in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrilimines and 1,2,4-triazepin-5-one derivatives: experimental, theoreti…
2005
Substituted 2,7-dimethyl-3-thioxo-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2H-[1,2,4]triazepin-5-one reacts as a dipolarophile with several N-aryl-C-ethoxycarbonylnitrilimines, in equimolar quantities, to give, in all cases, two types of products: diethyl 3-(p-aryl)-2-[N′-(p-aryl)-N′-(2′,7′-dimethyl-5′-oxo-5′,6′-dihydro-2H-[1,2,4]triazepin-3′-yl)-hydrazino]-2,3-dihydro[1,3,4]thiadiazole-2,5-dicarboxylate (3a–3c in 20–25% yield) and ethyl 4-(p-aryl)-5-imino-1,4-dihydro[1,3,4]thiadiazole carboxylate (4a–4c in 45–50% yield). When 1:2 stoichiometry was used, the formation of product 3 (50%) was favoured. The reaction is entirely chemo- and regioselective. The structures of the compounds obtained, where aryl stands f…
Regio-specific synthesis of new 1-(tert-butyl)-1H-pyrazolecarboxamide derivatives
2017
Regio-specific and non-regiospecific condensation reactions on 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds rendered 1,3,5-trisubstituted pyrazoles. Herein, the control of regio-specificity was a significant improvement in pyrazole research. A high yield acylation of poorly nucleophilic aryl amines, which resulted in mono- or diacylated products depending on the reaction conditions, is described. As a result, a library of potentially bioactive compounds was obtained. Fil: Ruatta Merke, Santiago Matías. Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) : an integrated project for understanding of the West African climate system and its human dimension
2011
International audience; The intraseasonal time scale is critical in West Africa where resources are highly rainfall dependent. Three main modes of variability have been identified, two with a mean periodicity of 15 days and one with a mean periodicity around 40 days. These modes have a regional scale and can strongly influence precipitation and convective activity. They are mainly controlled by atmospheric dynamics and land-surface interactions. They can also modulate the very specific phase of the African summer monsoon onset. A better knowledge of the mechanisms controlling this scale is necessary to improve its predictability.
The onset of the rainy season and farmers’ sowing strategy for pearl millet cultivation in Southwest Niger
2011
A multi-year (2004-2009) field survey of on-farm sowing practices in 10 villages located in south-west Niger close to Niamey, is analysed to investigate the relationships (i) between rainfall and the sowing date of pearl millet and the risk of sowing failure, (ii) between sowing and meteorological/agro-climatic onset dates, (iii) between sowing/onset dates, and simulated and observed yield/biomass at the end of the season. Even if some villages sow without any synchronous or anterior rainfall, most parcels (73% out of the 1551 available cases) are sown during and just after a 2-day wet spell receiving at least 10 mm. In fact, there is a strong correlation (r = 0.82-0.95 depending on onset d…
Influence of clouds on the spectral actinic flux density in the lower troposphere (INSPECTRO): overview of the field campaigns
2008
Ultraviolet radiation is the key factor driving tropospheric photochemistry. It is strongly modulated by clouds and aerosols. A quantitative understanding of the radiation field and its effect on photochemistry is thus only possible with a detailed knowledge of the interaction between clouds and radiation. The overall objective of the project INSPECTRO was the characterization of the three-dimensional actinic radiation field under cloudy conditions. This was achieved during two measurement campaigns in Norfolk (East Anglia, UK) and Lower Bavaria (Germany) combining space-based, aircraft and ground-based measurements as well as simulations with the one-dimensional radiation transfer model UV…

Abstract. We found that ambient and laboratory-generated secondary organic aerosols (SOA) form substantial amounts of OH radicals upon interaction with liquid water, which can be explained by the decomposition of organic hydroperoxides. The molar OH yield from SOA formed by ozonolysis of terpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene) is ∼ 0.1 % upon extraction with pure water and increases to ∼ 1.5 % in the presence of Fe2+ ions due to Fenton-like reactions. Upon extraction of SOA samples from OH photooxidation of isoprene, we also detected OH yields of around ∼ 0.1 %, which increases upon addition of Fe2+. Our findings imply that the chemical reactivity and aging of SOA particles is strongl…
