Activation of protein kinase C alpha and/or epsilon enhances transcription of the human endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene.
1998
In primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), incubation with phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) enhanced basal and bradykinin-stimulated nitric oxide production. In the HUVEC-derived cell line EA.hy 926, PMA and phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate stimulated endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS III) mRNA expression in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Maximal mRNA expression (3.3-fold increase) was observed after 18 hr. NOS III protein and activity were increased to a similar extent. The specific protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors bisindolylmaleimide I (1 microM), Gö 6976 [12-(2 cyanoethyl)-6,7,12, 13-tetrahydro-13-methyl-5-oxo-5H-indolo[2,3-a]pyrrolo-[3, 4-c]carbazole] (1…
Organization and expression of the chum salmon insulin-like growth factor II gene
1997
AbstractIGF-II plays an important role in growth and development of vertebrates. In the present study, the characterization of the first fish IGF-II gene, chum salmon IGF-II, is described. The sIGF-II gene consists of four exons, spanning a region of 9 kbp, that encode the 214 aa IGF-II precursor. While the amino acid sequences of fully processed IGF-II of salmon and mammalian species are very similar, the prepro-peptide sequence deviates extensively in the signal- and E-peptide domains. The transcription initiation site of the sIGF-II gene was localized within a 30 nt region employing RT-PCR. Using sIGF-II promoter-luciferase constructs it was demonstrated that the sIGF-II gene has a relat…
Pedagogisk- psykologisk tjeneste (PPT) og barn og unges psykiske helse i grunnskolen : hvordan opplever og forholder PPT seg til barn og unges psykis…
2014
Background: This project has become as a result of my work in mental hospital for adults, where my experience is that many adults who have had traumatic experiences in early years of life have got reduced quality of life as grownups. My question has been: “who is able to identify children and young people with mental challenges in early years of life?” Objective: The aim of this study has been to get knowledge about which challenges pedagogical- psychological services (PPT) face, and how they help and which experiences the consultants have about children and young people`s mental health. This has lead to the research question: “How experience and in what way does PPT relate to children and …
Development and testing of a net-based resource to guide teachers in assisting students with mental health challenges
2021
Master's thesis in Multimedia and educational technology (MM506) This thesis will seek answers to what extent teachers are properly equipped when helping students with mental health problems, how a net-based resource can assist teachers in handling this challenge, and what approaches teachers recommend for an easy-to-use net-based resource. We iteratively prototyped a net-based resource called Tankeverk.no using a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach by involving key stakeholders, experts, health personal, and teachers. The prototype combined with the in-depth interviews and questionnaires gave insights into the relevance, quality, and user acceptance of our solution. The vast majority of t…
The magic in the (extra)ordinary: Intensive validation to recalibrate the life-worlds of adolescents exposed to abuse
2022
This qualitative case study aimed to explore environmental circumstances and inter-actional processes that appeared to be relevant for the dynamics of resilience in ado-lescents exposed to child abuse. Fieldwork at a learning and coping centre forchildren and their families was combined with semi-structured interviews with ado-lescent participants aged 12 to 18 years. A critical realist approach was used tounpack what has been called the‘ordinary magic’of resilience. We found thatinten-sively validating qualitiesof both theenvironmentandrelationshipsseemed to be driv-ing components for resilience. Borrowing ideas from the sociometer theory, wepropose that particularly the consistent intensi…
Ethical realism before social constructionism
2021
In this article, I explore the idea that there is a fundamental ethical aspect that precedes social constructionism. I suggest that within social constructionism we can identify a development from seeing knowledge as socially constructed ( epistemological social constructionism) to seeing not only knowledge, but also corporeal ways of being as socially constructed ( ontological social constructionism). As a next step, I propose incorporating what I refer to as ethical realism in social constructionist perspectives. In the encounter with the other human being, I argue that there is a real ethical impulse that precedes social constructionism and puts it in motion. This impulse is real in the…
Tyrosine Phosphorylation Modulates the Vascular Responses of Mesenteric Arteries from Human Colorectal Tumors
2013
The aim of this study was to analyze whether tyrosine phosphorylation in tumoral arteries may modulate their vascular response. To do this, mesenteric arteries supplying blood flow to colorectal tumors or to normal intestine were obtained during surgery and prepared for isometric tension recording in an organ bath. Increasing tyrosine phosphorylation with the phosphatase inhibitor, sodium orthovanadate produced arterial contraction which was lower in tumoral than in control arteries, whereas it reduced the contraction to noradrenaline in tumoral but not in control arteries and reduced the relaxation to bradykinin in control but not in tumoral arteries. Protein expression of VEGF-A and of th…
Immunostimulants in prevention of columnaris disease of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum).

Chondroitin AC lyase activity is related to virulence of fish pathogenic Flavobacterium columnare.
2006
The virulence of eight Flavobacterium columnare strains was studied to find correlations between several virulence-related factors and virulence. Virulence was tested in vivo using rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum). Suggested virulence-related factors such as production of the degradative enzyme chondroitin lyase, plasmid occurrence and adhesion capability were studied in vitro. Infection with the four most virulent strains resulted in 95-100% mortality within 114 h. Chondroitin lyase activity was found to be significantly related to the virulence of the strains at 25 degrees C and it was also shown to be temperature-dependent, being higher at 25 degrees C than at 20 degrees C. V…
Transmission, infectivity and survival of Diplostomum spathaceum cercariae
2003
The transmission dynamics of the cercariae of Diplostomum spathaceum were investigated under laboratory conditions using cercariae collected from naturally infected Lymnaea stagnalis. Cercariae were kept in a constant temperature of 20 °C and the survival and infectivity to naïve young rainbow trout recorded at 3-h intervals until few cercariae were alive. Mortality initially remained constant but increased rapidly after 20 h. While a model of constant mortality fitted the survival data, an age-dependent model provided a better fit and implied that cercariae tended to carry similar quantities of resources and once these were exhausted the cercariae died. Cercarial infectivity also showed an…
