Effects of polysorbate 80 on amiodarone intestinal absorption in the rat

1995

Abstract Amiodarone is a widely used anti-arrhythmic agent which shows physico-chemical properties that are highly suitable for diffusion across lipophilic absorbing membranes, however,.its low aqueous solubility could represent the rate-limiting step for absorption, making it erratic and variable. In a previous paper, the influence of an anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulphate) at variable supramicellar concentrations was studied. The absorption rate constants of amiodarone decreased as the surfactant concentration increased, and absorption was unusually fast at lower surfactant concentrations. The previously proposed equations for interpreting the relationships between the amiodarone a…

Evaluation of molecular mass and tacticity of polyvinyl alcohol by non-equilibrium capillary electrophoresis of equilibrium mixtures of a polymer and…

2011

Non-equilibrium capillary electrophoresis of equilibrium mixtures (NECEEM) has been used to characterize polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Commercial PVA samples with different molecular masses, from M(w)=15 up to 205 kDa, were used. According to the (13)C NMR spectra, the samples also differed in tacticity (stereoregularity). Mixtures of PVA and the anionic azo-dye Congo Red (CR) were injected in the presence of a borate buffer. The electropherograms gave a band and a peak due to the residual PVA-CR complex and the excess dye, respectively, plus a superimposed exponential decay due to the partial dissociation of the complex during migration. The stoichiometry of the PVA-CR complex, q=[monomer]/[dye…

Extended music education enhances the quality of school life

2013

The claim of whether music education can create social benefits in the school environment was tested in 10 Finnish schools with an extended music curricular class and control classes. The quality of school life (QSL) was assessed by a representative sample (N=735) of pupils at years 3 and 6 (9- and 12-years-olds). The results showed that extended music education enhances the QSL, particularly in areas related to general satisfaction about the school and a sense of achievement and opportunity for students. Differences related to the schools and gender did not account for the results. A follow-up study examined whether the increase in critical QSL variables was related to music. This analysis…

Musical affect regulation in adolescents: A conceptual model

2019

Adolescents actively use music for affect regulation. In this chapter, affect is considered as a broad umbrella term containing moods, emotions, motivational impulses, and energy levels. Theoretical and empirical research has recently been unveiling the components involved in affect self-regulation, such as the psychological functions of music listening, affective goals, regulation strategies, and musical mechanisms. The study of these components and of their interactions has resulted in a better understanding of the dynamics between music engagement, wellbeing, and psychological development among adolescents. The purpose of this chapter is to present a conceptual model of musical affect se…

The Role of Polyvinylpyrrolidone as a Potential Fluorophore for the Detection of Nitroaromatic Explosives

2022

Background: Detection of explosives (Nitroaromatic compounds) is one of the major issues faced in global security and, to date, remains a challenge even though some materials are developed for their detection. This study introduces the use of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a nonconjugated conducting polymer, as a potential fluorophore for sensing nitroaromatics. The stimuliresponse of fluorescence of PVP on interaction with energetic nitroaromatics was investigated in the present study. Methods: Fluorescence quenching studies of 5% PVP was carried out by the addition of varying concentration of quenchers (m-dinitrobenzene, trinitrobenzene and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol). To study the effect of diff…

Physical Activity Tracker Application in Promoting Physical Activity Behavior among Older Adults : A 24-month Follow-Up Study

2022

Objectives To investigate whether and how PA tracker application use supports PA behavior among older adults during the first 24 months of use. Methods: The changes in PA levels (i.e., time spent in different PA intensities) and between PA categories (i.e., low, moderate, or high based on total PA) were examined between three different time points: before taking the application into use (t0), after 12 months of use (t1), and after 24 months of use (t2). The data was collected by using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire modified for the elderly (IPAQ-E). Results: A statistically significant increase was observed in walking (χ2 (2) = 29.741, p < .001), moderate PA (χ2 (2) =…

Mode of interaction of different polyanions with the first (), the second (C2) and the fourth (C4) component of complement—II

1976

Abstract Dextran sulfate, polyvinyl sulfate, liquoid, heparin and Sp 54, ∗ (a pentosanpoly-sulfoester) prevented the uptake of C2 by EAC4b. In contrast to EAC 4 b 2 a , treatment of EAC4b2 with polyanions led to dissociation into EAC4b and C2. The inhibition of C2 uptake by polyanions could be reduced by increasing magnesium concentration to levels which are normally inhibitory, suggesting that Mg ++ ions are sequestered by these sulfated polyanions.

Seasonal and daily variation in physical activity among three-year-old Finnish preschool children

2013

The purposes of this study were to assess seasonal, daily, and gender variations in children’s physical activity (PA). ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers were used to record the three-year-old children’s PA levels for five consecutive days in autumn and winter. Complete data for both seasons were obtained for 47 children. Despite a significant difference in seasonal temperatures (p < .001), differences were only found for weekdays light PA (p = .021). No difference in PA was observed between weekdays and weekend days. Only 20% of the sample had ≥120 minutes light-to-vigorous PA (LMVPA), and 46% of children had ≥60 minutes moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Boys spent more minutes in LMVPA (p = .001…

Computation of Yvon-Villarceau circles on Dupin cyclides and construction of circular edge right triangles on tori and Dupin cyclides

2014

Ring Dupin cyclides are non-spherical algebraic surfaces of degree four that can be defined as the image by inversion of a ring torus. They are interesting in geometric modeling because: (1) they have several families of circles embedded on them: parallel, meridian, and Yvon-Villarceau circles, and (2) they are characterized by one parametric equation and two equivalent implicit ones, allowing for better flexibility and easiness of use by adopting one representation or the other, according to the best suitability for a particular application. These facts motivate the construction of circular edge triangles lying on Dupin cyclides and exhibiting the aforementioned properties. Our first contr…

From Deep Learning to Deep University: Cognitive Development of Intelligent Systems

2018

Search is not only an instrument to find intended information. Ability to search is a basic cognitive skill helping people to explore the world. It is largely based on personal intuition and creativity. However, due to the emerged big data challenge, people require new forms of training to develop or improve this ability. Current developments within Cognitive Computing and Deep Learning enable artificial systems to learn and gain human-like cognitive abilities. This means that the skill how to search efficiently and creatively within huge data spaces becomes one of the most important ones for the cognitive systems aiming at autonomy. This skill cannot be pre-programmed, it requires learning…
