Calorie restriction (CR), which usually refers to a 20–40% reduction in calorie intake, can effectively prolong lifespan preventing most age-associated diseases in several species. However, recent data from both human and nonhumans point to the ratio of macronutrients rather than the caloric intake as a major regulator of both lifespan and health-span. Studies revealed that telomerase-positive cells can be triggered to telomerase-negative cells by dissociating them into single cells. In vitro Antifungal Activity of Biopolymeric Foam Activated with Carvacrol

Background: Active packaging represents a defining strategy to improve food quality and safety of the packaged foods. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro ability of commercial biopolymeric foams, namely Mater-Bi (MB), activated with 20% of carvacrol, to develop a completely biodegradable and compostable packaging to inhibit the growth of spoilage and pathogenic yeasts.
 Methods: MB foams, with and without carvacrol, were produced by melt mixing and the foaming process was performed in a laboratory press. Validation of a novel automatic deposition of bacteria and yeasts on MALDI target for MALDI-TOF MS-based identification using MALDI Colonyst robot

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) -based identification of bacteria and fungi significantly changed the diagnostic process in clinical microbiology. We describe here a novel technique for bacterial and yeast deposition on MALDI target using an automated workflow resulting in an increase of the microbes' score of MALDI identification. We also provide a comparison of four different sample preparation methods. Yeasts involved in the spontaneous fermentation of traditional beverages like chicha (indigenous Andean beer) may have the potential to be used as starter cultures to improve the quality and microbiological safety of these products, but also as non-conventional alternatives to other food alcoholic fermentations. Each class of microscope is limited to imaging specific aspects of cell structure and/or molecular organization. However, imaging the specimen by complementary microscopes and correlating the data can overcome this limitation. Whilst not a new approach, the field of correlative imaging is currently benefitting from the emergence of new microscope techniques. Here we describe the correlation of cryogenic fluorescence tomography (CFT) with soft X‐ray tomography (SXT). Segmental duplication associated with evolutionary instability of human chromosome 3p25.1

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of human bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones to orangutan metaphase spreads localized a breakpoint between human chromosome 3p25.1 and orangutan chromosome 2 to a <30-kb interval. The inversion occurred in a relatively gene-rich region with seven genes within 500 kb. The underlying breakpoint is closely juxtaposed to validated genes, however no functional gene has been disrupted by the evolutionary rearrangement. Evolution of microbiological and chemical parameters during red wine making with extended post-fermentation maceration.

Abstract The aim of the present work was to investigate the microbiological, chemical, and sensory characteristics of red wine subjected to post-fermentation maceration that was extended to 90 days. For this purpose, the ‘Aglianico di Taurasi’ grape was used as a case study. The total yeast concentration increased until day 40 of maceration and decreased thereafter, whereas the concentration of lactic acid bacteria slightly increased. Functional analysis ofp53 gene and the prognostic impact of dominant-negativep53 mutation in endometrial cancer

In addition to the loss of function, mutant p53 can possess a dominant-negative effect on wild-type p53 and may also exert gain-of-function activity. It is not clear whether the functional status of p53 mutation contributes to differences in outcome in endometrial cancer. We collected a total of 92 RNA samples of high quality from endometrial cancer tissues, and the samples were subjected to yeast functional assay and sequencing for p53 mutations.
