High-Spatial-Resolution Monitoring of Strong Magnetic Field using Rb vapor Nanometric-Thin Cell

2011

We have implemented the so-called $\lambda$-Zeeman technique (LZT) to investigate individual hyperfine transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the Rb atoms in a strong external magnetic field $B$ in the range of $2500 - 5000$ G (recently it was established that LZT is very convenient for the range of $10 - 2500$ G). Atoms are confined in a nanometric thin cell (NTC) with the thickness $L = \lambda$, where $\lambda$ is the resonant wavelength 794 nm for Rb $D_1$ line. Narrow velocity selective optical pumping (VSOP) resonances in the transmission spectrum of the NTC are split into several components in a magnetic field with the frequency positions and transition probabilities depending on th…

Zeeman effect in sulfur monoxide: A tool to probe magnetic fields in star forming regions

2017

[Context] Magnetic fields play a fundamental role in star formation processes and the best method to evaluate their intensity is to measure the Zeeman effect of atomic and molecular lines. However, a direct measurement of the Zeeman spectral pattern from interstellar molecular species is challenging due to the high sensitivity and high spectral resolution required. So far, the Zeeman effect has been detected unambiguously in star forming regions for very few non-masing species, such as OH and CN.

ENDOR Spectroscopic and Molecular Orbital Study of the Dynamical Properties of the Side Chain in Radical Anions of Ubiquinones Q-1, Q-2, Q-6, and Q-10

2000

Abstract The dynamics of the side chain of the radical anions of ubiquinones Q-1 (2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-[3-methyl-2-butenyl]-1,4-benzoquinone), Q-2, Q-6, and Q-10 have been investigated using electron nuclear double-resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopy. When radicals are produced in the liquid phase, secondary radicals are also formed. The EPR spectra of these additional radicals overlap with the radical of interest. ENDOR spectroscopy was found to be capable for studying the dynamical properties of such conditions. The temperature dependence of the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants of the β- and γ-protons of the side chain was measured. The activation energy of the rotation and other dyn…

Demonstration of sensitivity increase in mercury free-spin-precession magnetometers due to laser-based readout for neutron electric dipole moment sea…

2018

International audience; We report on a laser based $^{199}$Hg co-magnetometer deployed in an experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron. We demonstrate a more than five times increased signal to-noise-ratio in a direct comparison measurement with its $^{204}$Hg discharge bulb-based predecessor. An improved data model for the extraction of important system parameters such as the degrees of absorption and polarization is derived. Laser- and lamp-based data-sets can be consistently described by the improved model which permits to compare measurements using the two different light sources and to explain the increase in magnetometer performance. The laser-based ma…

Evidence for anI=1 isomeric state in96Rb

1981

Aβ-RADOP (β-Radiation Detected Optical Pumping) experiment on the short lived (T1/2=203 ms)96Rb isotope has been performed at the on line mass separator for fission produced alkali isotopes at the TRIGA reactor in Mainz. Irradiation of r.f. onto the polarized sample to induce Zeeman transitions resulted in two signals for nuclear spinsI=2 andI=1. The previously undetermined component withI=1 is interpreted as evidence for an isomeric state in96Rb.

Evaluation of the magnetic moments of radium isotopes

1990

Using the relativistic linked cluster many-body perturbation procedure we have obtained the hyperfine field at the nucleus of the Ra+ ion in the2S1/2 ground state. There is good agreement between the calculated magnetic moment of213Ra and the results of a recent Zeeman measurement by the collinear laser beam technique. Detailed comparison is carried out between our result and earlier ones.

Hydrogen-related radiation defects in SiO2-based glasses

2008

Abstract Spectroscopic properties of hydrogen atom trapped in an oxygen vacancy in SiO2 glass were studied. Samples were loaded with D2 and H2 gases to convert O vacancies to pairs of Si–D and Si–H groups, and subsequently irradiated by F2 laser in order to destroy some of these groups. Electron paramagnetic resonance, infrared absorption and visible/UV absorption spectra were measured. Proton hyperfine doublet with splitting of 1.05 mT was found in all H2-treated/irradiated samples. UV-bleaching treatment showed that this signal is independent of the other, well-known hydrogen-related signals in silica. The size of the hyperfine splitting corresponds to twice the 1H nuclear Zeeman splittin…

Determination of spin, magnetic moment and isotopic shift of neutron rich205Hg by optical pumping

1975

Neutron rich205Hg (T 1/2=5.2 min) was produced and on-line mass separated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The polarization achieved by optical pumping via the atomic line (6s 21 S 0↔6s6p 3 P 1,λ=2 537A) was monitored by theβ decay asymmetry. Hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the205Hg absorption line was determined by Zeeman scanning. In addition a magnetic resonance was performed on the polarized205Hg nuclei in the atomic ground state. The results are: $$I(^{205} Hg) = \tfrac{1}{2}$$ (confirmed);μ I (205Hg)=0.5915 (1)μ N (uncorrected for diamagnetism); isotopic shiftδv204/205=v(205Hg)-v(204Hg)=−1.8 (1) GHz.μ I and IS are discussed briefly in the frame of current literature.

Determination of the isotope shift of115m Cd by a Zeeman scanning method

1975

We have used an optical pumping-Zeeman scanning technique in order to determine the isotope shift in the 3,261 A resonance line of 43-day, spin-11/2115mCd. A sample of ≈5×1012 atoms was aligned in the1S0 diamagnetic ground state by optically pumping the sample with one selected Zeeman-scanned component of the3P1−3,261 A resonance line from a114Cd lamp. The alignment was detected through the modulation of the pumping beam at the nuclear resonance frequency. Thus by Zeeman scanning theF = 9/2 component of the3P1 level and using previously determinedA- andB-values, we findδ5v(114–115m (9/2))= −4,234(48) MHz and114Cd-115mCd isotope shift = 87(48) MHz. We calculate a staggering parameterγ(115mCd…

Strongly correlated states of trapped ultracold fermions in deformed Landau levels

2015

We analyze the strongly correlated regime of a two-component trapped ultracold fermionic gas in a synthetic non-Abelian U(2) gauge potential, that consists of both a magnetic field and a homogeneous spin-orbit coupling. This gauge potential deforms the Landau levels (LLs) with respect to the Abelian case and exchanges their ordering as a function of the spin-orbit coupling. In view of experimental realizations, we show that a harmonic potential combined with a Zeeman term, gives rise to an angular momentum term, which can be used to test the stability of the correlated states obtained through interactions. We derive the Haldane pseudopotentials (HPs) describing the interspecies contact inte…
