Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS) is a rare genetic syndrome characterized by a specific facial gestalt, intellectual deficiency, Hirschsprung disease and multiple congenital anomalies. Heterozygous mutations or deletions in the zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox2 gene (ZEB2) cause MWS. ZEB2 encodes for Smad-interacting protein 1, a transcriptional co-repressor involved in TGF-beta and BMP pathways and is strongly expressed in early stages of development in mice. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is characterized by an inflammatory status and it represents the major cause of death in elderly. Zinc deficiency and inflammatory genes within major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region are implicated in ischaemic heart diseases. TNF-alpha is present in coronary artery plaques and may provoke plaque instability. Hsp70 plays instead a pro-atherogenic role, via proinflammatory cytokine production, in atherosclerotic lesions contributing to plaque rupture. Abstract Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) - a rodent model of depression mimics a variety of neurochemical and behavioral alterations similar to those seen in human depression. This study evaluated the antidepressant activity of hyperforin in the CUMS model using fluoxetine (FLX) as a reference drug. The antidepressant-like effects of hyperforin and FLX were evaluated in the tail suspension test (TST), forced swim test (FST), and splash test (SPT). CUMS induced an increase in immobility time in mice (pro-depressive effects) in the FST and TST. Complexes [M(II)Gd(III){pyCO(OEt)pyC(OH)(OEt)py}₃](ClO₄)₂·EtOH [M(II) = Cu(II) (1), Mn(II) (2), Ni(II) (3), Co(II) (4) and Zn(II) (5)] crystallize in the monoclinic Cc space group and contain one hexacoordinate M(II) ion and one enneacoordinate Gd(III) ion, bridged by three {pyCO(OEt)pyC(OH)(OEt)py}⁻ ligands. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a ferromagnetic interaction for 1 and antiferromagnetic interactions for 2-4. A thermodynamic Gibbs energy minimization (GEM) solid solution-aqueous solution (SSAS) equilibrium model was used to determine the solubility of Zn from calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) phases doped with 0, 0.1, 1, 5, and 10% Zn at a unity (Ca+Zn)/Si molar ratio. Both the stoichiometry and standard molar Gibbs energy (G(o)298) of the Zn-bearing end-member in the ideal ternary Zn-bearing calcium silicate hydrate (CZSH) solid solution were determined by a "dual-thermodynamic" (GEM-DT) estimation technique. Abstract In this study, the effect of using nano-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles on the enhancement if the degradation resistance of wood-high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite was investigated through artificial weathering. Samples with different amounts of ZnO mixing ratio (0, 1, 2, and 4 wt%) were manufactured using an internal mixer followed by compression molding. The prepared samples were then exposed to the artificial weathering process in a QUV weatherometer. The weathering behavior of samples was characterized using tensile strength, contact angle analysis, colorimetry, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and FE-SEM. Selective targeting of PARP-1 zinc finger recognition domains with Au(III) organometallics

The binding of Au(iii) complexes to the zinc finger domain of the anticancer drug target PARP-1 was studied using a hyphenated mass spectrometry approach combined with quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) studies. Competition experiments were carried out, whereby each Au complex was exposed to two types of zinc fingers. Notably, the cyclometallated Au-C^N complex was identified as the most selective candidate to disrupt the PARP-1 zinc finger domain, forming distinct adducts compared to the coordination compound Auphen.
Corrosion behaviour of galvanized steel studied by electrochemical microprobes applied on low-angle cross sections

Abstract The combined use of the microcapillary cell (MEC) and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and low-angle cross sections was employed to elucidate the role of each coating region on the protection of the cut-edge corrosion of galvanized steels. Different compounds are involved in the blocking action of the corrosion products: Zincite (ZnO) on the steel substrate, hydrozincite (Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2) at the coating/steel interface, and Simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2) and ZnO on the different coating regions in different proportions.
