An Early Beginning of Citizen Science: Adolescents Experiencing Urban Energy Usages and Air Pollution

2021

Here, we report on the process and development of high school science projects, which were inspired by a citizen science program focused on urban monitoring. We gathered and discussed two 1980s projects’ data, involving 2600 students, 80 teachers, 15 scientists and 20 stakeholders. We added recent survey data from speaking with the former participants. Our analysis revealed key findings: (1) the process of a student-driven science investigation engages students in the scientific practices; (2) it is important to bring together scientists, teachers and students, reflecting the importance of multi-dimensional learning; and (3) citizen science was born before the 1990s, when the term came into…

The law and the risks of stability and integrity for financial institutions

2011

Purpose – There are ever growing relations and mutual influences between law and global economic context: so, there arises the need for them to be investigated in a legal perspective, which is the aim of this paper.Design/methodology/approach – The method used tries to combine the empirical observation of the legal and economic reality in today's world and a few essential theoretical foundations such as the freedom to dispose of one's rights by wave of contractual instrument.Findings – The dramatic crisis that the global world has had to face over the past few years compels legal scholars to revisiting process of traditional categories in order to adapt them to society's changing problems.R…

A Study of the Separation of 1-Dodecene and 1-Tetradecene Hydroformylation Products in Aqueous Medium

2009

Abstract Experimental results of the solubilization of olefins in hydroformylation model systems, comprising 1-dodecene and 1-tridecanal or 1-tetradecene and 1-pentadecanal, water, butanol, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), and/or tri(m-sulfofenyl)phosphine trisodium salt (TPPTS-Na) are presented. The selected systems were used for the hydroformylation of 1-dodecene and 1-tetradecene whereby high yields of aldehydes were obtained. After the reaction, the mixture spontaneously separated into an organic phase with the reaction products and an aqueous phase comprising the catalyst and excess phosphine ligand.

Synthesis of Triazenoazaindoles: a New Class of Triazenes with Antitumor Activity

2011

Despite improvements in the treatment and prevention of cancer, the number of new diagnoses continues to rise; this has fuelled substantial interest in the development of new and effective chemotherapeutic agents. Compounds of the triazene class, such as dacarbazine, have been used in the clinical management of many cancer types including brain, leukemia, and melanoma. A new compound class bearing a triazenoazaindole scaffold was synthesized with the aim of identifying new antiproliferative agents. Compounds 5 a-g and 6 a-c were screened against a panel of human tumor cell lines, and two of them, 5 e and 5 f, showed cytotoxicity (GI(50) range: 2.2-8.2 μM) in all cell lines. These two compou…

Involvement of NO in contact hypersensitivity.

1998

The NO synthases (NOS) generate NO from L-arginine. High concentrations of NO have been shown to be responsible for tissue injury and cell death, while low concentrations of NO induce vasodilatation and other signaling effects. We have investigated the involvement of NO in contact hypersensitivity (CHS) reactions. CHS induced by treatment of BALB/c mice with the contact allergen 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) was significantly reduced by the NOS inhibitor N-methyl-L-arginine (L-NMA), but not by the stereoisomer D-NMA, as shown by reduced ear swelling responses and evaluation of ear tissue sections. The CHS response was also reduced by aminoguanidine, which is known to preferentially inhibi…

Characterization of the atmospheric muon flux in IceCube

2015

Muons produced in atmospheric cosmic ray showers account for the by far dominant part of the event yield in large-volume underground particle detectors. The IceCube detector, with an instrumented volume of about a cubic kilometer, has the potential to conduct unique investigations on atmospheric muons by exploiting the large collection area and the possibility to track particles over a long distance. Through detailed reconstruction of energy deposition along the tracks, the characteristics of muon bundles can be quantified, and individual particles of exceptionally high energy identified. The data can then be used to constrain the cosmic ray primary flux and the contribution to atmospheric …

The benefit of multipore zeolites: Catalytic behaviour of zeolites with intersecting channels of different sizes for alkylation reactions

2009

Abstract The catalytic behaviour of two multipore zeolites containing channels of different sizes, SSZ-33 (10 windows × 12 MR) and ITQ-22 (8 × 10 × 12 MR pores), for alkylation of benzene with ethanol and benzene with isopropanol or propylene, has been studied and compared to that of zeolites with intersecting channels of the same size, ZSM-5 (10 × 10 MR channels) and Beta (12 × 12 MR channels), which are industrially used for the above-mentioned process. For the alkylation of benzene with ethanol in gas phase, ITQ-22 behaves like the 10 MR ZSM-5 with respect to ethylbenzene selectivity, while the behaviour of SSZ-33 is close to that of a 12 MR zeolite such as Beta. For the alkylation of be…

Alkylation of Benzene with Short-Chain Olefins over MCM-22 Zeolite: Catalytic Behaviour and Kinetic Mechanism

2000

Abstract Benzene alkylation with ethene and propene has been carried out under liquid-phase reaction conditions over zeolites MCM-22, Beta, and ZSM-5. MCM-22 seems to be a good catalyst for benzene alkylation especially with propene, showing high activity and stability and good selectivity. Kinetic experiments show that alkylation with propene follows an Eley–Rideal type mechanism.
