Dairy calcium intake and lifestyle risk factors for bone loss in hiv-infected and uninfected mediterranean subjects

Abstract Background Despite the reported high prevalence of osteoporosis in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-population, there have been no previous studies examining dairy calcium intake and bone mineral density (BMD) in HIV-subjects. We assessed the prevalence of low BMD in HIV-infected and uninfected subjects and analyzed the effects of calcium intake, lifestyle and HIV-related risk factors on BMD. Monitoring bone growth using quantitative ultrasound in comparison with DXA and pQCT.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is a safe, inexpensive, and nonradiation method for bone density assessment. QUS correlates with, and predicts fragility fractures comparable to, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. However, its validity in monitoring bone growth in children is not well understood. Differences in estimates of change of bone accrual and body composition in children because of scan mode selection with the prodigy densitometer.

Abstract Girls of age 10–13 yr with Tanner stage I–III maturation status ( n = 155) were measured using the Prodigy (GE Lunar) densitometer. Bone area (BA), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed for the whole body, lumbar spine, and proximal femur using the Thin (T) and Standard (S) scan modes at years 1 and 3 of the study. The differences obtained between the T and S mode at year 1 were 1–2% for the lumbar spine and proximal femur and 5–11% for the whole body. For those girls whose default mode changed from T at year 1 to S mode at year 3, the estimated gain in BA, BMC, and BMD was 3.4%, 7.6%, and 3.1% respectively, lower than that obtained when scanning …

Estimation of structural and geometrical properties of cortical bone by computerized tomography in 78-year-old women

The structural and geometrical properties of the tibia shaft were investigated at two sections by means of computerized tomography (CT) in 78-year-old women with high (n = 19) and low (n = 17) calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm3) previously measured by 125I-photon absorption. The high BMD group had a 20-21% higher tibial BMD and 9-12% higher bone cross-sectional area than was observed in the low BMD group. The distribution of bone mass indicated that the low BMD group had lost bone mainly from the endosteal surface, especially in the anterior part of the tibia. Objectives: To evaluate the association between radiographically-assessed knee osteoarthritis and femoral neck bone characteristics in women with mild knee radiographic osteoarthritis and those without radiographic osteoarthritis. Methods: Ninety postmenopausal women (mean age [SD], 58 [4] years; height, 163 [6] cm; weight, 71 [11] kg) participated in this cross-sectional study. Arthralgia as an early extraintestinal symptom of Whipple's disease. Report of five cases.

Five patients with Whipple's disease all suffered from arthralgia for a long time (15 years in one case) before developing gastrointestinal or other symptoms. In all patients, arthralgia was seronegative, and there was no evidence of joint destruction. Arthralgias were symmetric and migrating. Whipple's disease is part of the differential diagnosis of enteropathic arthralgia. Thereby, the polymerase chain reaction can be a helpful tool to prove Whipple's disease in difficult differential diagnosis.

Frozen shoulder: a sympathetic dystrophy?

Diagnostic and clinical features of the frozen shoulder syndrome and the Sudeck syndrome are similar in many aspects. Radioisotope bone scan shows an increased uptake in affected areas in both diseases, while native radiographs show a progressive demineralisation. Neridronate prevents bone loss in patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer.

The ultrasonic axial transmission technique has been proposed as a method for cortical bone characterization. Using a low enough center frequency, Lamb modes can be excited in long bones.
