Cholesky decomposition-based definition of atomic subsystems in electronic structure calculations
2010
Decomposing the Hartree-Fock one-electron density matrix and a virtual pseudodensity matrix, we obtain an orthogonal set of normalized molecular orbitals with local character to be used in post-Hartree-Fock calculations. The applicability of the procedure is illustrated by calculating CCSD(T) energies and CCSD molecular properties in reduced active spaces. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.
The dependency of the validity of information integration on cognitive variables and the judgement task
1980
Simple models of information integration focus essentially on the combination of the components of information. This research investigated whether cognitive variables in the constructs of intelligence and cognitive complexity, as well as concentration, could predict the conditions of simple models of judgement. As additional predictors, the two qualitative variables [type of information] and [experience of the judgement task] were introduced. Subjects judged three types of stimuli using the pair comparison method. The conditions of the judgement models were analysed in the framework of the conjoint-measurement approach. Five different regression functions provided mediocre approximations to…
Design principles for learning analytics information systems in higher education
2020
This paper reports a design science research (DSR) study that develops, demonstrates and evaluates a set of design principles for information systems (IS) that utilise learning analytics to support learning and teaching in higher education. The initial set of design principles is created from theory-inspired conceptualisation based on the literature, and they are evaluated and revised through a DSR process of demonstration and evaluation. We evaluated the developed artefact in four courses with a total enrolment of 1,173 students. The developed design principles for learning analytics information systems (LAIS) to establish a foundation for further development and implementation of learning…
Linking design management skills and design function organization: An empirical study of Spanish and Italian ceramic tile producers
2007
Abstract Design management is an increasingly important concept, research into which is very scarce. This paper deals with the fit between design management skills and design function organization, ranging from solely in-house to solely outsourced and including a mixture of the two. We carried out a survey in the Spanish and Italian ceramic tile industry, to which 177 product development managers responded. Our results revealed that companies have different degrees of design management skills depending on the approach to design function organization. Solely in-house design approach companies are the most skilled firms and solely outsourced ones are the least skilled. Despite the fact that t…
Complex ecological models with simple dynamics: From individuals to populations
1994
The aim of this work is to study complex ecological models exhibiting simple dynamics. We consider large scale systems which can be decomposed into weakly coupled subsystems. Perturbation Theory is used in order to get a reduced set of differential equations governing slow time varying global variables. As examples, we study the influence of the individual behaviour of animals in competition and predator-prey models. The animals are assumed to do many activities all day long such as searching for food of different types. The degree of competition as well as the predation pressure are dependent upon these activities. Preys are more vulnerable when doing some activities during which they are …
A topological obstruction to the geodesibility of a foliation of odd dimension
1981
Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n, and let ℱ be a smooth foliation on M. A topological obstruction is obtained, similar to results of R. Bott and J. Pasternack, to the existence of a metric on M for which ℱ is totally geodesic. In this case, necessarily that portion of the Pontryagin algebra of the subbundle ℱ must vanish in degree n if ℱ is odd-dimensional. Using the same methods simple proofs of the theorems of Bott and Pasternack are given.
A Branch-Price-and-Cut Algorithm for the Min-Max k -Vehicle Windy Rural Postman Problem
2013
[EN] The min-max k -vehicles windy rural postman problem consists of minimizing the maximal distance traveled by a vehicle to find a set of balanced routes that jointly service all the required edges in a windy graph. This is a very difficult problem, for which a branch-and-cut algorithm has already been proposed, providing good results when the number of vehicles is small. In this article, we present a branch-price-and-cut method capable of obtaining optimal solutions for this problem when the number of vehicles is larger for the same set of required edges. Extensive computational results on instances from the literature are presented.
CADEM: calculate X-ray diffraction of epitaxial multilayers
2017
This article presents a powerful yet simple program, based on the general one-dimensional kinematic X-ray diffraction (XRD) theory, which calculates the XRD patterns of tailor-made multilayers and thus enables quantitative comparison of measured and calculated XRD data. As the multilayers are constructed layer by layer, the final material stack can be entirely arbitrary.
Diffraction by m-bonacci gratings
2015
We present a simple diffraction experiment with m-bonacci gratings as a new interesting generalization of the Fibonacci ones. Diffraction by these nonconventional structures is proposed as a motivational strategy to introduce students to basic research activities. The Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are obtained with the standard equipment present in most undergraduate physics labs and are compared with those obtained with regular periodic gratings. We show that m-bonacci gratings produce discrete Fraunhofer patterns characterized by a set of diffraction peaks which positions are related to the concept of a generalized golden mean. A very good agreement is obtained between experimental and …
