Akademisk fagskriving på ingeniørstudiet
2020

In the Norwegian engineering education, there has been an increasing focus on writinginstruction in the last decade. Although writing in the disciplines seems to be the overall goal, the disciplines themselves are not prepared for nor equipped to provide the writing instructionthe students need.
This article attempts to measure the effect of a writing course that was given in the firstsemester of the engineering study at the University of Agder in 2018. The writing course was acollaboration between the disciplines of engineering, the university library and a writinginstructor with permanent affiliation to the Department of Engineering. The aim of thecollaboration was to gather…
The value of academics’ research-related online writing
2020
Research productivity indicators tend to ignore online and social media writing of academics, nevertheless, many academics for instance tweet and blog. It thus seems that there is additional value for writing in these genres. This study sets out to explore what roles writing in these hybrid online genres plays in relation to academics’ research activities. Drawing on in-depth research interviews with 29 academics with various L1s from three different disciplines, the study focuses on the participants’ perceptions of tweeting and blogging, and how they value writing in these genres in relation to core research-writing genres in their fields. Besides some differences in the evaluations betwee…
24/7 Society—The New Timing of Work?
2018
Public debate on societal rhythms, in particular working hours, has been dominated by a (fear) scenario about a shift towards a 24/7 society. Factors such as the services- and information-driven economy, deregulation of opening hours, changes in the rhythms of consumer culture have been expected to disrupt “normal” working time. The term ‘24/7 society’ is part of the popular discussion and occasionally encountered in academic writing as well. 24/7-society is expected to create both new opportunities and new risks. In this chapter, we produce up-to-date literature review to examine how the post-industrial, services-dominated economy changes work and leisure time practices. This chapter also …
Developing Academic Thinking in the EFL Writing Classroom: A Rationale for General-academic Writing Assignments
2020
It’s nothing to write home about : Finnish writers in the world of Anglo-American academic writing conventions
2009
Translingual and translocal perspectives on writing : An introduction
2022
This special issue has been inspired by presentations and discussions which took place during the first workshop of our NOS-HS research network ‘The Politics and Ideologies of Multilingual Writing’ (Stockholm University, 27-28 May 2021). In this issue, we explore translingual and translocal perspectives, zooming in on various aspects of writing, from its legitimacy to its localities. Our focus is on writing for publication by authors with multilingual repertoires and/or working in multilingual settings. Unlike previous research, which focused on academic, journalistic, and creative writing as separate domains, we aim to bring together researchers working in different subfields of linguisti…
Norms and Ideologies of Academic Writing on an International Master’s Programme in Finland
2019
This ethnographically-oriented study followed the experiences of six (later four) students on an international master’s programme in Finland. Programmes such as this combine culturally, linguistically and often academically diverse students, using English as a lingua franca for course completion and evaluation, rather than the official language of the institution. My aim was to explore the norms and ideologies of English academic writing on the programme, or, in other words, what counts as ‘good’ writing for participants in this increasingly common context of English use for academic purposes. Over three years, I collected a range of data, including students’ texts, instructions for and fee…
