The chemical composition of rainwater was studied in two highly-industrialised areas in Sicily (southern Italy), between June 2018 and July 2019. The infestation due to the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), the key pest in most of world olive groves, has been monitored in six years, from 2004 to 2008 and in 2014, in eight coastal Sicilian olive groves consisting of ‘Cerasuola’ and ‘Nocellara del Belice’ cultivars. p-Nitrophenolate: A Probe for Determining Acid Strength in Ionic Liquids

In order to obtain an acidity scale in room-temperature ionic liquid solutions, the protonation equilibrium of sodium p-nitrophenolate in [bm(2)im][NTf(2)] and in [bmpyrr][NTf(2)], at 298 K, has been studied by means of spectrophotometric titration. Carboxylic acids differing in both structure and in water solution strength have been used. Data collected indicate that in the analyzed ionic liquid solutions carboxylic acids are less dissociated than in water solution. Furthermore, by virtue of a mutual interaction, the studied equilibrium seems to be affected by both the nature of the ionic liquids and the carboxylic acids.

Yield and Fruit Quality Characterization of Eight Old Sicilian Apple Cultivars

In this trial, we examined the quality of eight old Sicilian apple cultivars (‘Cannamelo’, ‘Cardinale’, ‘Gelata Cola’, ‘Gelata’, ‘Granatino’, ‘San Giuseppe’, ‘Virticchiaro’, ‘Zitella’) and a commercial one (‘Annurca’ traditional clone) through bio-agronomic performances and chemical-physical analyses. We also analyzed flowering time, ripening time, pomological characteristics, and generated a specific descriptor list that indicates a great variability among the cultivars. The data obtained showed interesting characteristics in ‘Granatino’, ‘Virticchiaro’, and ‘Zitella’, such as total soluble solid, fruit size, peel cover color, yield efficiency, and crop load.

Halogens and trace metal emissions from the ongoing 2008 summit eruption of Kīlauea volcano, Hawai`i

Volcanic plume samples taken in 2008 and 2009 from the Halemàumàu eruption at Kīlauea provide new insights into Kīlauea's degassing behaviour. The Cl, F and S gas systematics are consistent with syn-eruptive East Rift Zone measurements suggesting that the new Halemàumàu activity is fed by a convecting magma reservoir shallower than the main summit storage area. Comparison with degassing models suggests that plume halogen and S composition is controlled by very shallow (&lt;3m depth) decompression degassing and progressive loss of volatiles at the surface. Regular consumption of fresh orange juice increases human skin carotenoid content

Dermal carotenoids are a good indicator of antioxidant status in the body. This study aimed to determine whether regular consumption of orange juice could increase dermal carotenoids. Two types of orange juice, obtained from regularly (CI) and partially (PRD) irrigated trees, were tested to reveal any possible association between juice and dermal carotenoids. Soluble solids, titratable acidity, and total carotenoids were quantified in the juice; skin carotenoid score (SCS) was assessed by Raman spectroscopy.
