Adenocarcinoma of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) is a severe disease. Patients carrying EGFR mutations may benefit from EGFR targeted therapies (e.g.: gefitinib). Recently, it has been shown that sialidase NEU3 directly interacts and regulates EGFR. In this work, we investigate the effect of sialidase NEU3 overexpression on EGFR pathways activation and EGFR targeted therapies sensitivity, in a series of lung cancer cell lines. NEU3 overexpression, forced after transfection, does not affect NSCLC cell viability. Genetic polymorphism of human complement factor I (C3b inactivator) in the Chinese Han population.

The human complement factor I (IF) polymorphism has been analysed by polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing electrophoresis of neuraminidase-treated EDTA plasma samples followed by immunoblotting and enzymatic detection. In a population study among 121 random individuals from Chengdu, PR China, three different common phenotypes were observed. The results show that IF is polymorphic in the Chinese population. The allele frequencies were as follows: FI*A = 0.153, FI*B = 0.847. The distribution of observed phenotypes was in accordance with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Human complement C81 (C8 A) polymorphism: detection and segregation of new variants

In addition to the earlier detected C81(A) rare variants A1, A2 (now A3) and B1 (now B2), six new rare variants (C81 A2 new, A4, A5, A6, M1 and B1new) are described within the polymorphism of the eighth component of human complement (alpha-gamma chain subunit). Except for A3, all rare C81 A variants are only detected by isoelectric focusing, and not by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), in the alpha-gamma subunit. In one individual out of approximately 700 individuals studied, a reversed position of the common allele (B vs A) was observed by SDS PAGE and the isofocusing technique. The segregation of A1, A3 and A4 could be followed in putative father/child combinations.

In the present study, we investigated the progressive acclimation of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis to different reduced seawater (SW) salinities and its effect on several biochemical markers and biotests. Mussels were purchased from a local mariculture facility during summer (SW temperature 27 degrees C, salinity 37.5 psu) and winter (13 degrees C, 37 psu) seasons, and transferred to the laboratory for acclimation to reduced SW salinities (37, 28, 18.5 and 11 psu). Stress-70 proteins in marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis as biomarkers of environmental pollution: a field study.

In the present work we have investigated levels of stress-70 proteins in the gills of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis collected seasonally from subtidal rocky shores at 6 different sites of the Rovinj coastal area (Northern Adriatic, Croatia). 1-D analysis (SDS-PAGE) using monoclonal mouse antibodies anti-HSP70 detected two bands of stress-70 proteins, 70 and 72 kDa constitutively present during the year. 2-D analysis (IEF+SDS-PAGE) proved that the antibodies used detected HSP70 (pI 5.7–5.9) and HSP72 (pI 5.5–5.6). Flavobacterium columnare colony types: connection to adhesion and virulence?

Four different colony morphologies were produced by Flavobacterium columnare strains on Shieh agar plate cultures: rhizoid and flat (type 1), non-rhizoid and hard (type 2), round and soft (type 3), and irregularly shaped and soft (type 4). Two human serum proteins, corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) and sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), were purified to homogeneity by the application of a combination of three different modes of chromatography. Isolation and characterization of a 60-70-kD plasma membrane glycoprotein involved in the contact-dependent inhibition of growth

Previous studies have shown that plasma membrane compounds are involved in the contact-dependent inhibition of growth of human diploid fibroblasts. The purification of the active plasma membrane glycoprotein is described in this report. The glycoprotein has an apparent molecular mass of 60-70 kD and, due to differential sialylation, isoelectric points between pH 5.5. and 6.2. Treatment with sialidase yielded one spot in two-dimensional gel electrophoresis with an isoelectric point of 6.3. After removal of the N-glycosidically linked oligosaccharide chains, the apparent molecular mass is reduced by approximately 22 kD. Abstract Structural modifications of bovine serum albumin (BSA) induced by heating, and the involvement of glycation of albumin in such processing were studied by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). For native BSA, heating treatments gave rise to β structures which were amplified to the detriment of α-helix form, and which were associated with increased aggregation.
