Polymethacrylate monoliths with immobilized poly-3-mercaptopropyl methylsiloxane film for high-coverage surface functionalization by thiol-ene click …
2014
In this work, new polythiol-functionalized macroporous monolithic polymethacrylate-polysiloxane composite materials are presented which can be useful substrates for highly efficient immobilization of (chiral) catalysts, chromatographic ligands, and other functional moieties by thiol-ene click reaction. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EDMA)) monoliths were coated with a poly-3-mercaptopropyl methylsiloxane (PMPMS) film and subsequently the polymer was covalently immobilized by formation of crosslinks via nucleophilic substitution reaction with pendent 2,3-epoxypropyl groups on the monolith surface. This monolith, though, showed similar levels of surface co…
Synthesis of Linear and Star-Shaped Block Copolymers of Isobutylene and Methacrylates by Combination of Living Cationic and Anionic Polymerizations
1998
A new synthetic route for the preparation of polyisobutylene (PIB)-based linear and star-shaped block copolymers was developed by combining living carbocationic and anionic polymerizations. Living PIB chains were quantitatively endcapped with 1,1-diphenylethylene, leading to 1,1-diphenyl-1-methoxy (DPOMe) or 2,2-diphenylvinyl (DPV) termini, or both. Both the DPOMe- and DPV-terminated PIBs, and the mixtures of both endgroups were quantitatively metalated with K/Na alloy, Cs metal, or Li dispersion in THF at room temperature. The resulting stable macrocarbanion obtained by metalation with K/Na alloy was used to initiate living anionic polymerization of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) yielding …
Synergistic behavior of poly(aspartic acid) and Pluronic F127 in aqueous solution as studied by viscometry and dynamic light scattering.
2012
Abstract Pluronic F127/poly(aspartic acid) mixtures were investigated in dilute solutions by viscometry and dynamic light scattering. The two polymers were chosen due to well known applications in biomedical field, taking into account the final purpose (the use of the complex structure as drug delivery systems). The central item was to identify the possibility of complexation between the poly(carboxylic acid) and a non-ionic polymer and to investigate the conditions of the interpolymer complex formation. The ability of Pluronic F127 to form micelle is well known. Poly(aspartic acid), as a polycarboxylic acid with resemblance with polyacrylic acid, can act as dispersant, antiscalant, superab…
Macromolecules in ordered media VIII. High-performance size-exclusion chromatography as a technique for characterizing the interaction between polyan…
1997
Abstract The association of polyanions with liposomes based on dimyristoyl phosphatidyl choline and stearylamine at a ratio of 50:50 was investigated in terms of the binding model and, to a lesser extent, of the partition model. Aqueous size-exclusion chromatography has been proposed as a major technique for monitoring the interactions between liposomes and polyelectrolytes and the results were compared with those obtained by fluorescence spectroscopy. Quantitatively, the extent of the association follows the order: Sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) ( K A = 10 000 M −1 ), poly (acrylic acid) ( K A = 2000 M −1 ) and poly ( l -glutamic acid) ( K A = 700 M −1 ). Also, the effect of the ionic stre…
Inulin-iron complexes: a potential treatment of iron deficiency anaemia.
2007
The aim of this work was that to synthesize macromolecular derivatives based on inulin able to complex iron and useful in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. Carboxylated or thiolated/carboxylated inulin derivatives were obtained by single or double step reactions, respectively. The first one was obtained by reaction of inulin (INU) with succinic anhydride (SA) alone obtaining INU-SA derivative; the second one was obtained by the reaction of INU with succinic anhydride and subsequent reaction of INU-SA with cysteine; both derivatives were treated with ferric chloride in order to obtain the INU-SA-Fe(III) and INU-SA-Cys-Fe(III) complexes. Both complexes showed an excellent biodegradabi…
HPMA-LMA copolymer drug carriers in oncology: an in vivo PET study to assess the tumor line-specific polymer uptake and body distribution.
2013
Polymeric drug carriers aim to selectively target tumors in combination with protecting normal tissue. In this regard polymer structure and molecular weight are key factors considering organ distribution and tumor accumulation of the polymeric drug delivery system. Four different HPMA based copolymer structures (random as well as block copolymers with lauryl methacrylate as hydrophobic block) varying in molecular weight, size and resulting architecture were analyzed in two different tumor models (AT1 prostate carcinoma and Walker-256 mammary carcinoma) in vivo. Polymers were labeled with (18)F and organ/tumor uptake was followed by μPET imaging and ex vivo biodistribution. Vascular permeabi…
Freeze-dried eudragit-hyaluronan multicompartment liposomes to improve the intestinal bioavailability of curcumin.
2016
This work aimed at finding an innovative vesicle-type formulation able to improve the bioavailability of curcumin upon oral administration. To this purpose, phospholipid, Eudragit® S100 and hyaluronan sodium salt were combined to obtain eudragit-hyaluronan immobilized vesicles using an easy and environmentally-friendly method. For the first time, the two polymers were combined in a system intended for oral delivery, to enhance curcumin stability when facing the harsh environment of the gastrointestinal tract. Four different formulations were prepared, keeping constant the amount of the phospholipid and varying the eudragit-hyaluronan ratio. The freeze-drying of the samples, performed to inc…
Reactive blending of functionalized acrylic rubbers and epoxy resins
2001
A high molecular weight acrylonitrile/butadiene/methacrylic acid (Nipol 1472) rubber is chosen to control processability and mechanical properties of a TGDDM (tetra glycidyl diphenyl methane) based epoxy resin formulation for aerospace composite applications. The physical blend of rubber and epoxy resin, achieved by dissolution of all the components in a common solvent, forms a heterogeneous system after solvent removal and presents coarse phase separation during cure that impairs any practical relevance of this material. A marked improvement of rubber-epoxy miscibility is achieved by reactive blending ('pre-reaction') the epoxy oligomer with the functional groups present in the rubber. The…
Effect of media composition on long-term in vitro stability of barium alginate and polyacrylic acid multilayer microcapsules.
2000
For a number of applications stability of microcapsules is a critical factor. Since the maintenance of polyelectrolyte complexes depends considerably on the ion composition we tested the physical properties of barium alginate capsules and searched for conditions to improve stability by a multilayer coating with polyethylenimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA). Mechanical stability and diameters were determined in barium alginate capsules and compared with multilayer capsules. Multilayer coating resulted in smaller capsules than barium complexing alone. The difference was more pronounced when CaCl2 was used instead of NaCl during coating. Barium alginate capsules and application of CaCl2 du…
Drug release from alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide-based microparticles.
2004
Abstract Spherical pH-sensitive microparticles have been prepared by reverse phase suspension polymerization technique. Starting polymer has been α , β -poly( N -2-hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide (PHEA) partially derivatized with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA). PHEA-GMA copolymer (PHG) has been crosslinked in the presence of acrylic acid (AA) or methacrylic acid (MA) at various concentration. The obtained microparticles have been characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometry, particle size distribution analysis and scanning electron microscopy. In order to have information about water affinity of the prepared samples, swelling measurements have been carried out in aqueous media which simulate some bi…
