Power of Paradox: Grassroots Organizations’ Legitimacy Strategies Over Time

2021

Fringe stakeholders with limited resources, such as grassroots organizations (GROs), are often ignored in business and society literature. We develop a conceptual framework and a set of propositions detailing how GROs strategically gain legitimacy and influence over time. We argue that GROs encounter specific paradoxes over the emergence, development, and resolution of an issue, and they address these paradoxes using cognitive, moral, and pragmatic legitimacy strategies. While cognitive and moral strategies tend to be used consistently, the flexible and paradoxical use of pragmatic strategies has important consequences, both for GROs’ legitimacy and for their potential influence over powerf…

The Public Artist as a Fringe Agent for Sustainability: Practices of Environmentalist Driven Art-Activism and Their Digital Perspectives

2022

The chapter investigates today’s intersection of visual arts and sustainability, which developed thanks to the civic agency of public artists especially concerned with environmental issues. Since its inception, public art operated on the fringe, thus framing a space for new practices and wider audiences. Drawing on an interdisciplinary analysis of the last two decades that shaped sustainable art practices, the chapter explores key concepts, practices, categories, and exemplary artworks that defined public art as a form of activism addressing environmental concerns. The chapter analyzes examples of ecological interventions, community engagement, radical actions, and digital sharing that effi…

Digital Spaces of Collaboration in Aesthetic Counter Narratives: Hamedullah. The Road Home and The Mirror Project

2020

Based on Margaret Somers’s senses of narrative and narrativity by means of which “we constitute our social identities (1992: 600), this study focuses on the scrutiny of two digital “subversive” aesthetic products, namely, British filmmaker Sue Clayton’s documentary Hamedullah. The Road Home (2012) and German philosopher Kevin McElvaney’s The Mirror Project (2017), with the objective of highlighting how the unfolding of verbal and visual narratives can be treated as the principle and “inescapable” (Baker 2006: 9) mode by means of which marginalised subjectivities “experience the world” (Baker 2006: 9) and can render it familiar to the Western gaze. The narratives revealed by the Afghan boy, …

Anti-Racism from the Margins: Welcoming Refugees at Schengen’s Northernmost Border

2018

Through events of solidarity with refugees that unfolded at the Arctic border between Norway and Russia in 2015, we critically address two common analyses of racism and humanitarianism. First, we argue that the often-claimed explanation that racism results from disenfranchised social class fails to identify solidarities across marginalized groups. Furthermore, as anti-Muslim racism has become more mainstream in the Nordic region, solidarity with refugees offers critical positions in relation to political centers. Second, the case demonstrates how humanitarian action and politicized refugee activism are not necessarily separate forms of action but more entangled forms of engagement. The case…

ENACCIÓN, APRENDIZAJE EXPERIENCIAL Y ADQUISICIÓN DEL ESPAÑOL COMO LS

2019

The object of the present work is to observe, from an enactive position, not only the language, but above all the learning of Spanish as second language in Italian students. And, to carry out this analytical operation, we will use the experimental learning model of Kolb (1984), which considers learning a process driven by experience and requires, for its correct realization, the man to interact with his environment.

Resolving the Puzzle of Conspiracy Worldview and Political Activism: Belief in Secret Plots Decreases Normative but Increases Nonnormative Political …

2019

It is a hitherto open and debated question whether the belief in conspiracies increases or attenuates the willingness to engage in political action. In the present article, we tested the notion, whether (a) the relation between belief in conspiracies and general political engagement is curvilinear (inverted U-shaped) and (b) there may be opposing relations to normative versus nonnormative forms of political engagement. Two preregistered experiments ( N = 194, N = 402) support both propositions and show that the hypothetical adoption of a worldview that sees the world as governed by secret plots attenuates reported intentions to participate in normative, legal forms of political participati…

The development of digital technologies has fostered basic transformations in the public sphere, reflected in the typology of media outlets, forms of organ…

Refugiadas colombianas: defensoras de derechos humanos y activistas transnacionales

2017
