POSTER: Optimizing scientific file I/O patterns using advice based knowledge
2014
Before us, other works have used data prefetching to boost applications performance [1]–[8]. Our approach differs from these works since we do not rely on precise I/O pattern information to predict and prefetch every chunck of data in advance. Instead we use data prefetching to group many small requests in a few big ones, improving applications performance and utilization of the whole storage system. Moreover, we provide the infrastructure that enables users to access file system specific interfaces for guided I/O without modifying applications and hiding the intrinsic complexity that such interfaces introduce.
Oral Hygiene and Dietary Habits in Adolescents with Fixed Orthodontic Appliances: A Cross-sectional Study.
2016
ABSTRACT Objectives Fixed orthodontic appliances (FOAs) may cause a temporary deterioration of oral hygiene with corresponding gingival inflammatory changes. Optimal oral hygiene and dietary changes are essential in order to avoid periodontal inflammation. The present study investigates to what extent the recommendations made by the orthodontist are followed by young patients. Materials and methods A total of 67 adolescent patients with FOA were examined and interviewed. The control group consisted of 70 patients of the same age who had not undergone any orthodontic treatment. A specific questionnaire (assessing dietary habits, oral hygiene measures) was used and comprehensive oral findings…
Acute Gastroenteritis and Campylobacteriosis in Swiss primary care: the viewpoint of general practitioners
2016
Acute gastroenteritis (AG) is frequently caused by infectious intestinal diseases (IID) including food- and waterborne pathogens of public health importance. Among these pathogens, Campylobacter spp. plays a major role. Many European countries monitor selected IIDs within disease surveillance systems. In Switzerland, the information on IIDs is restricted to limited surveillance data, while no data is available for AG. We conducted a qualitative study among Swiss general practitioners (GPs) to investigate the case management of AG and campylobacteriosis patients, the associated disease burden and the determinants leading to registration in the National Notification System for Infectious Dise…
Quality of Life after Surgical Treatment for Esophageal Atresia: Long-Term Outcome of 154 Patients.
2017
Background The short- and long-term surgical results in patients with esophageal atresia (EA) with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) have been described in depth from a physician's perspective. Patients and Methods A total of 154 patients who had operative reconstruction for EA between 1971 and 2012 were evaluated for demographic data, surgical technique, affection of daily life, and coping strategies. Results Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) symptoms were reported in 59% of cases with 33% requiring fundoplicatio…

Telephone Consultation
2016
The article by Martina Albrecht and her co-authors (1) addresses an important aspect of patient-oriented medical decision making in Germany: to what extent does the advice dispensed by the freely accessible telephone consultation services correspond with the evidence? In other words: Can people who turn to these services understand and trust the information they are given? Only six of 293 consultations fulfilled the criteria defined by the authors—on the face of it, an alarming outcome.
Genetic analyses of ling (Molva molva) in the Northeast Atlantic reveal patterns relevant to stock assessments and management advice
2014
AbstractThe ling, Molva molva, is a commercially exploited demersal gadid fish distributed throughout the Northeast Atlantic. Here, we provide the first study of population genetic structure by genotyping 6 geographically distinct samples with 11 microsatellite DNA markers. The results rejected the hypothesis of a single ling stock in the Northeast Atlantic, and rather suggested the existence of two or more groups, with the main grouping represented by a western (comprising Rockall and Iceland) and an eastern group (Faroe Bank, Norway). Significant genetic differences coincide with an expanse of deep water that probably limits connectivity facilitated by migration. Retention in gyres and di…

Sport-related acute myocardial infarction; Context of onset and one-year follow-up
2021
Background Sport-related (SR) acute coronary events are the main cause of sudden cardiac in the setting of sport activities; data are very scarce regarding the context of onset and the follow-up of SR acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods We prospectively invited subjects admitted in our University Hospital from April 2018 for a SR-AMI to participate in the IMACS observatory program which addresses to SR-AMI including a 12 months follow-up. Results From April 2018 to April 2019, 21 subjects were included. The mean age of this male population was 57.5 ± 11.0 (median 56). The context of event was available for 21 (provided by family for a subject with out of hospital (OH) SCA). Sport was…
