Development of a low-cost IoT system to detect and locate lightning strikes

Lightnings are violent natural phenomena and can generate many expenditures, specially when they strike in urban areas. The identification of the concrete geographic area where they strike is of critical importance for emergency services in order to enhance their effectiveness by doing an intensive coverage of the affected area. Determining the source and eruption dynamics of a stealth CME using NLFFF modelling and MHD simulations

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that exhibit weak or no eruption signatures in the low corona, known as stealth CMEs, are problematic as upon arrival at Earth they can lead to geomagnetic disturbances that were not predicted by space weather forecasters. We investigate the origin and eruption of a stealth event that occurred on 2015 January 3 that was responsible for a strong geomagnetic storm upon its arrival at Earth. Comparison of actual and imagined execution of whole-body movements after a long exposure to microgravity

Five cosmonauts were tested 30 days before a six-month space flight and also on the 2nd and the 6th day after their return to Earth. Cosmonauts performed and imagined a task that involved climbing two stairs to step onto a platform, jumping down with both feet and walking normally for a distance of 4 m. Durations of actual and imagined movements were measured by an electronic stopwatch. Results indicated that cosmonauts performed actual and imagined movements with similar durations before and after the space flight. Silicon carbide (SiC) power metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) are space-ready in terms of typical reliability measures. However, single event burnout (SEB) due to heavy-ion irradiation often occurs at voltages 50% or lower than specified breakdown. Failure rates in space are estimated for burnout of 1200 V devices based on the experimental data for burnout and the expected heavy-ion linear energy transfer (LET) spectrum in space. peerReviewed

Necessary conditions for extremality and separation theorems with applications to multiobjective optimization

The aim of this paper is to give necessary conditions for extremality in terms of an abstract subdifferential and to obtain general separation theorems including both finite and infinite classical separation theorems. This approach, which is mainly based on Ekeland's variational principle and the concept of locally weak-star compact cones, can be considered as a generalization f the notions of optima in problems of scalar or vector optimization with and without constraints. The results obtained are applied to derive new necessary optimality conditions for Pareto local minimum and weak Pareto minimum of nonsmooth multlobjectivep rogramming problems.

The effect of wind on jumping distance in ski jumping – fairness assessed

The special wind compensation system recently adopted by Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS; International Ski Federation) to consider the effects of changing wind conditions has caused some controversy. Here, the effect of wind on jumping distance in ski jumping was studied by means of computer simulation and compared with the wind compensation factors used by FIS during the World Cup season 2009/2010. The results showed clearly that the effect of increasing head/tail wind on jumping distance is not linear: +17.4 m/ − 29.1 m, respectively, for a wind speed of 3 m/s. Growth of osteoblasts on lithographically modified surfaces

Here we report about preliminary investigations on developing substrates for culturing osteoblasts, the cells responsible for production of mineralised bone, by lithographically modifying the surfaces of several materials. The proton beam writing system at the National University of Singapore was used to fabricate high aspect ratio structures in PMMA, while two-dimensional low aspect ratio structures were fabricated using conventional electron beam lithography (EBL) and UV lithography (UVL) in SU-8.
