Eveiller et réguler un prince et un peuple nouveaux : la « Constitution morale » des Plutarques brésiliens
2020
After the independence proclaimed in 1822, Brazil sought to build an identity that would allow it to be among the great nations of the world. To this end, a whole educational literature was created, supporting the numerous newspapers that used the freedom of the press, acquired in 1821, to perfect the political education of their compatriots, while at the same time inviting the very young Emperor D. Pedro (born in 1798) to become the model for his people for centuries to come. All then had faith in the influence of the public virtues of the prince on the private and civic virtues of the people; all feared the inadequacy between the Political Constitution, granted in 1824, and the real const…

Children Without Borders: An alternative way for thinking external assistance to education
2023
Development challenges in most social domains, like education and health, are generally examined and analyzed in countries, and in light of information produced at the country level. Albeit useful, most of these studies remain "hic and nunc", strongly pegged to data collected at country level and attached to individual countries. Furthermore, this country-specific focus is all the more strengthened because external assistance and funding directed to social issues is, in reality, channeled to address social issues within countries. This research aims at gauging the extent to which the current pattern by which the donor community as a whole allocates its funds to individual countries in view …
Testing the Effects of GraphoGame Against a Computer-Assisted Math Intervention in Primary School
2022
International audience; Purpose: This study was designed to assess the efficiency of a French version of GraphoGame (GG) against an equally engaging math intervention (Fiete Math, FM) in a large school sample of children from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods in grade 1 (N = 921). Method: The intervention was implemented in two different cohorts who used GG or FM for about four months four times a week for 30 minutes. Gains in reading and mathematics were assessed before and after intervention. Given the nested nature of the data, results were analyzed using hierarchical linear mixed effect models with intervention and initial pretest level as fixed effects and individuals and c…
L'aide au développement de la communauté internationale
2001
International audience; We exam the aide policy of the different actors of the international community. We find that, today, there exists no definition of development which could lead the coherent and coodinated action of the community. However it is possible that new strong common tendencies could appear.

Peer effects in the light of students interactions and the subjective dimensions of school experience
2011
This Thesis addresses the issue of peer-effects in the context of school. From analysis of a large database produced by a Chilean national study (SIMCE 2004), this work investigates the mechanisms through which pupils with different levels of scholastic, human and cultural capital influence each other. These influences seem present for a diverse range of school outcomes, including academic achievement. Drawing on the literature produced by different disciplinary approaches —sociology, economics, social psychology and education— the study focuses on ways of identifying and measuring peer-effects. The presence of subjective dimensions capable of reflecting, in part, the school experience of p…
