Catalytic effect of Ca and K on CO2 gasification of spruce wood char

2015

Abstract Gasification is one route to produce chemicals and liquid fuels from biomass. The gasification of the char is catalyzed by alkali and alkaline earth metals in the biomass. In this work the catalytic effect of calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) on CO2 gasification of spruce wood was studied using a thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA). The ash-forming elements were first removed from the wood using an acid leaching method. Then, various concentrations of K and Ca were absorbed to the wood by ion-exchange to carboxylic and phenolic groups, impregnation of K2CO3 or physically mixing of CaC2O4. The prepared spruce samples were placed in a mesh holder and gasified in the TGA at 850 °C in 100% …

Reduced levels of membrane-bound alkaline phosphatase in Vip3Aa-resistant Heliothis virescens

2020

ABSTRACTThe Vip3Aa insecticidal protein fromBacillus thuringiensis(Bt) is produced by specific transgenic corn and cotton varieties for efficient control of target lepidopteran pests. The main threat to this technology is the evolution of resistance in targeted insect pests, thus understanding the mechanistic basis of resistance is crucial to deploy the most appropriate strategies for resistance management. In this work, a laboratory-selected colony ofHeliothis virescens(Vip-Sel) highly resistant to the Vip3Aa protein was used to test whether an alteration of membrane receptors in the insect midgut might explain the resistance phenotype. Binding of125I-labeled Vip3Aa to brush border membran…

A rapid method for the screening of plasmids in transformed yeast strains

1988

A method for the rapid screening of plasmids in yeast cells has been developed. The method is an adaptation of the currently used alkaline lysis methods forEscherichia coli plasmids. Following the conditions described, several dozen ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae-transformed clones can be analyzed for their plasmid content in less than 2 h. The plasmids obtained by this procedure are suitable for restriction analysis or forE. coli andS. cerevisiae transformation.

Rare earth elements in apatite as a monitor of magmatic and metasomatic processes: The Ilímaussaq complex, South Greenland

2015

Abstract Textural and compositional variations of apatite from the plutonic Ilimaussaq complex in South Greenland and its surrounding country rocks track magmatic and metasomatic processes. Detailed back-scattered electron (BSE) imaging reveals various types of apatite textures including (i) growth zonation (concentric, oscillatory as well as sector zonation) formed during magmatic differentiation, (ii) resorption and overgrowth textures due to fluid/melt induced metasomatic overprint of precursor apatite and (iii) replacement textures indicating the destabilization of apatite in favor of monazite. In the least evolved rocks of the Ilimaussaq complex, apatite incorporates rare earth element…

Contrasting Styles of Inter-Caldera Volcanism in a Peralkaline System: Case Studies from Pantelleria (Sicily Channel, Italy)

2022

The recent (<190 ka) volcanic history of Pantelleria is characterized by the eruption of nine peralkaline ignimbrites, ranging in composition from comenditic trachyte to comendite to pantellerite. The ~46 ka Green Tuff (GT) was the last of these ignimbrites, which was followed by many effusive and explosive low-volume eruptions of pantellerite from vents within the caldera moat and along the caldera rim. Although recent studies have shed additional light on the age, petrochemistry, and volcanology of the older ignimbrites, there is very little knowledge of magmatism that occurred between these older ignimbrites, primarily due to the very scarce exposures. In this paper, we present new fi…

Spatial analysis of the relationship between mortality from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease and drinking water hardness

2004

Journal Article; Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; Reproduced with permission from Environmental Health Perspectives. Previously published scientific papers have reported a negative correlation between drinking water hardness and cardiovascular mortality. Some ecologic and case-control studies suggest the protective effect of calcium and magnesium concentration in drinking water. In this article we present an analysis of this protective relationship in 538 municipalities of Comunidad Valenciana (Spain) from 1991-1998. We used the Spanish version of the Rapid Inquiry Facility (RIF) developed under the European Environment and Health Information System (EUROHEIS) research project. The strateg…

Interaction of metal ions with N-glycosylamines: isolation and characterization of the products of 4,6-O-benzylidene-N-(o-carboxyphenyl)-β-D-glucopyr…

2001

Metal-ion complexes of Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ with 4,6–O–benzylidene–N–(o–carboxyphenyl)–β–D–glucopyranosylamine were synthesized and isolated as solid products and characterized by analytical means as well as by spectral techniques, such as, 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR, absorption, FAB mass spectrometry, optical rotation and CD. While the alkali metal ions formed ML type of complexes, the other metal ions formed ML2 type complexes. Molecular weights of the complexes of Li+, Na+ and K+ were established based on the molecular-ion peaks in the FAB mass spectra. The saccharide portion remians in the β-anomeric form even after the complexation. The spectral data, as well as t…

Die Bilhmie ? Eine seltene komplikation nach schwerster leberruptur

1990

Inorganic Polyphosphate in Human Osteoblast-like Cells

1998

Significant amounts of inorganic polyphosphates and of polyphosphate-degrading exopolyphosphatase activity were detected in human mandibular-derived osteoblast-like cells. The amount of both soluble and insoluble long-chain polyphosphate in unstimulated osteoblast-like cells was higher than in human gingival cells, erythrocytes, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and human blood plasma. The cellular content of polyphosphate in osteoblast-like cells strongly decreased after a combined treatment of the cells with the stimulators of osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, dexamethasone, beta-glycerophosphate, epidermal growth factor, and ascorbic acid. The amount of soluble long-chain p…
