Molecular spreading and predictive value of preclinical IgE response to Phleum pratense in children with hay fever.

2012

Background IgE sensitization against grass pollen is a cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Objective We sought to investigate the evolution at the molecular level and the preclinical predictive value of IgE responses against grass pollen. Methods The German Multicentre Allergy Study examined a birth cohort born in 1990. A questionnaire was administered yearly, and blood samples were collected at 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, and 13 years of age. Grass pollen–related seasonal allergic rhinitis (SARg) was diagnosed according to nasal symptoms in June/July. Serum IgE antibodies to Phleum pratense extract and 8 P pratense molecules were tested with immune-enzymatic singleplex and multiplex assays, res…

Relationship between rhinitis duration and worsening of nasal function

2008

BackgroundWhile it is well known that asthma is characterized by airway remodeling, few studies instead have investigated this issue in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR).ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to evaluate nasal function, ie, nasal airflow, in a cohort of patients with persistent AR (PER).MethodsOne hundred patients, 50 with short-term and 50 with long-term PER, were prospectively and consecutively evaluated, clinically evaluated by visit, skin prick test, and rhinomanometry.ResultsNasal airflow values were significantly lower (median flow: 348 mL/sec) in patients with long-term rhinitis (median duration nine years) as compared to patients with short-term (median duration one y…

S3 Guidelines: Epicutaneous patch testing with contact allergens and drugs – Short version, Part 2

2019

Epicutaneous patch testing is the diagnostic standard for the detection of allergic contact dermatitis. The present guidelines are aimed at residents and board-certified physicians in the fields of dermatology and allergology as well as other medical specialties involved in establishing the indication for patch testing and its execution in patients with contact dermatitis and other forms of delayed-type hypersensitivity. The target audience also includes other health care providers and insurance funds. Based on a systematic literature search and a formal consensus process (S3), the guidelines were developed by dermatologists in collaboration with pediatricians, occupational medicine physici…

Olfactory function in chronic rhinitis subtypes: Any differences?

2018

Introduction: Olfactory dysfunction is a common problem in rhinological disease, but it has been few evaluated among patients with different chronic rhinitis subtypes. The aim of this study was to assess olfactory function in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR), non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) and mixed rhinitis (MR). Materials and methods: A total of 122 patients with AR, NAR, and MR were included in the study. Sniffin' Sticks test was applied to all groups. The study groups were compared in terms of odor scores and an association between olfactory dysfunction and rhinitis grading, according to ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) criteria, was also investigated. Results: A signi…

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ON FRACTIONAL EXHALED NITRIC OXIDE IN ALLERGIC CHILDREN

2011

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a non-invasive marker of airway inflammation in asthma and respiratory allergy. Environmental factors, especially indoor and outdoor air quality, may play an important role in triggering acute exacerbations of respiratory symptoms. The authors have reviewed the literature reporting effects of outdoor and indoor pollutants on FeNO in children. Although the findings are not consistent, urban and industrial pollution—mainly particles (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2)—as well as formaldehyde and electric baseboard heating have been shown to increase FeNO, whilst ozone (O3) tends to decrease it. Among children exposed to …

Contact hypersensitivity to disodium hexachloroplatinate in mice.

1998

Complex platinum (Pt) compounds are known as occupational respiratory sensitizers whereas their role in skin exposure is unclear. In this study, both skin irritation and induction of contact hypersensitivity by halide Pt salts were characterized in mice. Repeated application of Na2[PtCl6] (5% in acetone) to both ears of naive BALB/c mice induced activation of the draining auricular lymph nodes. Flow cytometric analysis revealed a striking increase in the number of lymph node cells expressing proliferating cell nuclear antigen. In separate experiments, Na2[PtCl6] or acetone were applied only to the right ear of mice on 4-8 consecutive days and the animals were challenged on the left ear 6 da…

ARIA 2016: Care pathways implementing emerging technologies for predictive medicine in rhinitis and asthma across the life cycle

2016

The Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) initiative commenced during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999. The initial goals were (1) to propose a new allergic rhinitis classification, (2) to promote the concept of multi-morbidity in asthma and rhinitis and (3) to develop guidelines with all stakeholders that could be used globally for all countries and populations. ARIA-disseminated and implemented in over 70 countries globally-is now focusing on the implementation of emerging technologies for individualized and predictive medicine. MASK [MACVIA (Contre les Maladies Chroniques pour un Vieillissement Actif)-ARIA Sentinel NetworK] uses mobile technology to develop care p…

Overweight/obesity and respiratory and allergic disease in children : international study of asthma and allergies in childhood (ISAAC) phase two

2014

Background: Childhood obesity and asthma are increasing worldwide. A possible link between the two conditions has been postulated. Methods: Cross-sectional studies of stratified random samples of 8-12-year-old children (n=10 652) (16 centres in affluent and 8 centres in non-affluent countries) used the standardized methodology of ISAAC Phase Two. Respiratory and allergic symptoms were ascertained by parental questionnaires. Tests for allergic disease were performed. Height and weight were measured, and overweight and obesity were defined according to international definitions. Prevalence rates and prevalence odds ratios were calculated. Results: Overweight (odds ratio=1.14, 95%-confidence i…
