Aluzja polityczna jako środek teatralnego przekładu. O "Lizystracie" w opracowaniu Stanisława Koźmiana

2022

In his 1895 adaptation of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata prepared for the Kraków Theatre, Stanisław Koźmian, wishing to avoid stage ‘archaeologism,’ based the text on the contemporary adaptation by Charles Maurice Don- nay, to which he added several scenes taken from the Greek original. The ambitious plan to translate a theatrical experience from over two thousand years ago into the language of modern communication was achieved by introducing contemporary political allusions. The premiere was consid- ered a scandal, and, according to the surviving copy with notes updating the allusions, the performance was not continued in in the Lwów threatre. The official reason for the uproar caused by Koźmian…

The Postwar Years

2009

A few months after the capitulation of the German Reich on May 9, 1945, Huckel’s newly built house, that had withstood the ravages of war, was one of many in Marburg to be confiscated by the Americans. Huckel’s nervous condition deteriorated again under the heavy psychological pressure. His allusion to this in his autobiography was down to earth:

Four Times of Politics: Policy, Polity, Politicking, and Politicization

2003

There is just one noun corresponding to the adjective political in French, German, Swedish, Finnish and so on, while the English language has three: policy, polity, and politics. Here, I shall take the tripartite division of the English polit-vocabulary as a point of departure for rethinking politics in a "de-centering" mode. The English vocabulary provides us with a glimpse into the linguistic possibilities for the formation of different perspectives from which to conceptualize politics. I have modified the tripartite division by taking into account two linguistic novelties, politicking and politicization.1 My intention is to take each of these nouns as an allusion to four aspects of conce…

El «Libro quinto de las prosas y versos del Arcadia» de Lope de Vega : una apoteosis emblemática sin imágenes

2018

ABSTRACT: Recourse to emblematic expressive modes is a constant throughout the literary production of Lope de Vega. His pastoral romance Arcadia, especially, occupies a privileged position with regards to allusions and references to emblems, imprese and hieroglyphics (hieroglíficas), as Lope calls them on several occasions. In this respect, the end of the «Fifth Book of the Arcadia» constitutes an authentic emblematic construction with its description of twenty-one imprese painted on tablets in the Temple of Disillusionment (Templo del Desengaño), described by shepherds and shepherdesses on the occasion of an amorous disappointment endured in the course of their lives. This study analyzes t…

My eden, my hell: Biblical allusions in the lyrics of Sonata Arctica

2010

Metallimusiikkia on suuresta suosiostaan huolimatta tutkittu melko vähän tieteellisesti. Tutkimuksessani metal…

The boundaries of citation and allusion: Shakespeare in Davide ferrario's Tutta colpa di giuda (2008), Alfredo Peyretti's Moana (2009), and Connie Ma…

2018

The paper focuses on the following samples of media material: Davide Ferrario’s Tutta colpa di Giuda (2008), a film set in an Italian prison that references Hamlet; Alfredo Peyretti’s Moana (2009), which is about the life of Italian porn star Moana Pozzi, and incorporates lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream; a 2001 episode of Crime Scene Investigation entitled “Caged” that makes citations from Othello interact with an investigation into what looks like a murder; and Connie Macatuno’s Rome and Juliet (2006), a Filipino experimental film that turns Shakespeare’s tragic love story into a lesbian romance. The paper argues that “Shakespeare” is a fragmentary but significant presence in each of …

The Einstein field equation in a multidimensional universe

1988

String theory [4] predicts that the universe has 10 or 26 dimensions. A salient problem is how the Einstein field equation should be written in terms of these revivified Kaluza-Klein cosmologies. The answer is by now well-known, yet nobody seems to have rewritten the seminal computation in [6] where an unnecessarily involved Euler-Lagrange variational method is employed and, curiously enough, no allusion to the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is made. We provide a more straightforward argument, which has been inspired by Hilbert's original derivation of the Einstein field equation [5].
