Traditional medicine as a source of new therapeutic agents against psoriasis.

Non-conventional methods and media for the activation and manipulation of carbon nanoforms

Very often, chemical transformations require tedious and long procedures, which, sometimes, can be avoided using alternative methods and media. New protocols, enabling us to save time and solvents, allow us also to explore new reaction profiles. This Tutorial Review focuses on the physical and chemical behavior of carbon nanoforms, CNFs (fullerenes, nanotubes, nanohorns, graphene, etc.) when non-conventional methods and techniques, such as microwave irradiation, mechano-chemistry or highly ionizing radiations are employed. In addition, the reactivity of CNFs in non-conventional media such as water, fluorinated solvents, supercritical fluids, or ionic liquids is also discussed.

Cluster Origin of the Solubility of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

The possibility of the existence of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in organic solvents, in the form of clusters containing a number of SWNTs, is discussed. A theory is developed based on a bundletmodel for clusters, which enables describing the distribution function of clusters by size. Comparison of the calculated values of solubility with experimental data would permit obtaining energetic parameters characterizing the interaction of an SWNT with its surrounding in a solid phase or solution. Green and good? The investment performance of US environmental mutual funds

Increased concern for the environment has increased the number of investment opportunities in mutual funds specialized in promoting responsible environmental attitudes. This article examines the performance and risk sensitivities of US green mutual funds vis-a-vis their conventional peers. We also analyze and compare this performance relative to other socially responsible investing (SRI) mutual funds. In order to implement this analysis, we apply a CAPM-based methodology and find that in the 1987–2009 period, environ- mental funds had lower performance than conventional funds with similar characteristics. Isolactarane and Sterpurane Sesquiterpenoids from the Basidiomycete Phlebia uda

Three new sesquiterpenoids, named udasterpurenol A, udalactarane A, and udalactarane B, as well as the known compounds hyphodontal and sterpuric acid have been isolated from the basidiomycete Phlebia uda. These compounds represent the first natural products described from this species. The structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Udalactaranes A and B were isolated as mixtures with their respective epimeric acetals. These mixtures inhibited the spore germination of the plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearum at 10 and 5 μg/mL, respectively, and were active against Jurkat cells with IC(50) values of 101 and 42 μM, respectively.

ABSTRACT Interstitial pneumonia is a major clinical manifestation of primary or recurrent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in immunocompromised recipients of a bone marrow transplant. In a murine model, lungs were identified as a prominent site of CMV latency and recurrence. Pulmonary latency of murine CMV is characterized by high viral genome burden and a low incidence of variegated immediate-early (IE) gene expression, reflecting a sporadic activity of the major IE promoters (MIEPs) and enhancer. Functional analysis of the isoforms of an ABI3-like factor of Pisum sativum generated by alternative splicing

At least seven isoforms (PsABI3-1 to PsABI3-7) of a putative, pea ABI3-like factor, originated by alternative splicing, have been identified after cDNA cloning. A similar variability had previously only been described for monocot genes. The full-length isoform, PsABI3-1, contains the typical N-terminal acidic domains and C-terminal basic subdomains, B1 to B3. Reverse transcriptase-PCR analysis revealed that the gene is expressed just in seeds, starting at middle embryogenesis; no gene products are observed in embryo axes after 18 h post-imbibition although they are more persistent in cotyledons. Alternatively spliced transcripts of the thymus-specific protease PRSS16 are differentially expressed in human thymus.

The putative serine protease PRSS16 is abundantly expressed in the thymic cortex and the gene is encoded within the HLA I complex. Although its function is not yet defined, the very restricted expression points to a role in T-cell development in the thymus. In this study, we show that the PRSS16 mRNA is alternatively spliced to generate at least five transcripts. Apart from the full-length sequence, we found two other isoforms with all putative active site residues of the serine protease, suggesting that those variants may also be functional.
