The reaction of aromatic α,β-unsaturated ketones with 4,5-diamino-1,6- dihydropyrimidin-6-ones
1994
The reaction of 4,5-diamino-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-6-ones 1 with one equivalent of the chalcones 2 leads in an acidic medium to the formation of the 2,4-diaryl-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-pyrimido[4,5-b][1,4]diazepin-6-ones 3a-m. The structure elucidation of the products is based on detailed nmr investigations including selective 13C[1H] decoupling experiments.

Chemical Evolution of Nitrogen-based Compounds in Mozzarella Cheeses
2018
This Brief evaluates the consequences of protein modifications in cheeses, with special emphasis on mozzarella cheeses. It explains the influence of biogenic amines on food quality and safety. As certain biogenic amines display a toxic potential to humans, considerable research has been undertaken in recent years to evaluate their presence in fermented foods, such as cheeses. This Brief summarizes how the presence of amines is influenced by different factors such as cheese variety, seasoning and microflora. The authors compare typical profiles of different products, e.g. ripe vs. unripe cheeses, focusing also on the different types of mozzarella cheeses. The Brief also introduces several an…
Caries arresting effect of silver diamine fluoride on dentine carious lesion with S. mutans and L. acidophilus dual-species cariogenic biofilm
2013
OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study investigated the effects of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) on dentine carious lesion with cariogenic biofilm. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty human dentine blocks were inoculated with Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus dual-species biofilm to create carious lesion. They were equally divided into test and control group to receive topical application of SDF and water. After incubation anaerobically using micro-well plate at 37oC for 7 days, the biofilms were evaluated for kinetics, morphology and viability by colony forming units (CFU), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and confocal microscopy (CLSM), respectively. The carious lesion underwent crystal cha…
Short hydrogen bonds enhance nonaromatic protein-related fluorescence
2021
Significance Intrinsic fluorescence of nonaromatic amino acids is a puzzling phenomenon with an enormous potential in biophotonic applications. The physical origins of this effect, however, remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate how specific hydrogen bond networks can modulate fluorescence. We highlight the key role played by short hydrogen bonds, present in the protein structure, on the ensuing fluorescence. We provide detailed experimental and molecular evidence to explain these unusual nonaromatic optical properties. Our findings should benefit the design of novel optically active biomaterials for applications in biosensing and imaging.
CoIILnIII dinuclear complexes (LnIII = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) as platforms for 1,5-dicyanamide-bridged tetranuclear CoII2LnIII2 complexes: A magneto-…
2012
Five acetate-diphenoxo triply-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(I) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) of formula [Co(mu-L)(mu-Ac)Ln(NO3)(2)] and two diphenoxo doubly-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(III) = Gd, Tb) of formula [Co(H2O)(mu-L)Ln(NO3)(3)]center dot S (S = H2O or MeOH), were prepared in one pot reaction from the compartmental ligand N,N',N ''-trimethyl-N,N ''-bis(2-hydroxy3-methoxy-5-methylbenzyl)diethylene triamine (H2L). The diphenoxo doubly-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes were used as platforms to obtain 1,5-dicyanamide-bridged tetranuclear Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(III) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er). All exhibit ferromagnetic interactions between the Co-II and Ln(III) ions and in the case …
Self-assembly in surfactant-based liquid mixtures: Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid/bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine systems
2010
Surfactant-based liquid mixtures constitute an interesting class of nanostructured materials with promising potential in specialized applications. Here, structural and conductometric properties of liquid mixtures composed of bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEEA) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) have been thoroughly investigated with the aim to correlate structural features with system charge transport capability. The evolution of self-assembled local nanostructures with system composition has been investigated by FT-IR and XRD while the conductometric properties were probed by conventional AC complex impedance. Both pure components exhibit nano-segregation due to their amphiphilic natur…

ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis and in vitro Studies on a Potential Dopamine Prodrug.
2009
Dopamine delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) undergoes the permeability limitations of blood-brain barrier (BBB) which is a selective interface that excludes most water-soluble molecules from entering the brain. Neutral amino acids permeate the BBB by specific transport systems. Condensation of dopamine with neutral amino acids could afford potential prodrugs able to interact with the BBB endogenous transporters and easily enter the brain. The synthesis and characterization of the dopamine derivative 2-amino-N-[2-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-ethyl]-3-phenyl-propionamide (7) is described. The chemical and enzymatic stability of 7 was evaluated. The molecular weight (300 Da) and Log Papp (…
