Can grassland plant communities be preserved on road and railway verges?

2000

Semi-natural grasslands are a threatened biotope type in many countries. Typical grassland plant species are adapted to continuous grazing or mowing that keeps the envi- ronment open. With the decline in grassland area, these spe- cies are ever more reliant on alternative habitats such as road verges. To find out whether plant communities comparable to those of semi-natural grasslands can be maintained on modern road and railway sides, the vegetation of 92 grasslands and 90 road and railway verges was studied. These biotope types were compared with each other according to their community structure, total number of species, number of grassland species and restricted-range diversity. Further …

Bitcoin e cyber self-laundering: lo sguardo sospettoso della Cassazione sull'impiego di criptovaluta

2023

In Judgment n. 27023 of 2022, the italian Supreme Court recognized the confgurability of the crime of self-money laundering in the conduct of a person who uses the proceeds of crimes committed by him to purchase bitcoin, not directly, but through the intermediation of cryptocurrency exchange companies. The Author takes the pronouncement as a starting point to probe the extent to which the culture of suspicion, with which the anti-money laundering legislation is imbued, and the stigmatization of cryptocurrency have influenced the Supreme Court's guidance, in which there emerges a strong temptation to establish a kind of automatism between the input of illicit proceeds into the bitcoin system…

Evaluation of B-cell secretion and peripheral insulin resistance during pregnancy and after delivery in gestational diabetes mellitus with obesity

1988

Nine pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) were studied. Six normal pregnant women and six normal nonpregnant women were evaluated as control groups. All the women underwent oral glucose tolerance test and glucose clamp during the third trimester of pregnancy and two months after delivery. During OGTT, glucose, C-peptide and insulin plasma levels were determined. C-peptide and insulin values in the late phase of OGTT were higher during pregnancy than after delivery in both groups. In gestational diabetic women, the M-value in the second steady-state during glucose clamp was lower than in controls, both during pregnancy and after delivery. Nevertheless, in both groups the M…

Intraportal transplantation of allogenic pancreatic islets encapsulated in barium alginate beads in diabetic rats.

2003

The survival of microencapsulated islets transplanted into the unmodified peritoneal cavity is limited, even if capsular overgrowth is restricted to a minimum, due to an insufficient oxygen supply to the islets. Therefore, research efforts should focus on finding or creating a transplantation site, which permits a closer contact between the encapsulated islets and the blood. For this reason, the liver could be an interesting candidate. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the intraportal transplantation of allogenic islets encapsulated in small-sized barium alginate beads is safe and succeeds to induce normoglycemia in diabetic rats. The intraportal transplantation o…

The Approach Behavior to Angry Words in Athletes—A Pilot Study

2019

An increasing number of studies have found that athletes have a higher level of aggression than non-athletes. Anger is an important factor in the generation of aggressive behavior, and anger has been found to relate to both approach behavior and avoidance behavior. The present pilot study compared the aggression level of athletes and non-athletes using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and examined the responses of participants to anger-related stimuli using the manikin task, a paradigm that measures approach-avoidance behavior. In total, 15 athletes and 15 non-athletes finished the questionnaire and the manikin task, which included two conditions. In the anger approach condition, pa…

All changed, changed utterly: endangered identities in Autumn by Ali Smith.

2019

The essay intends to look at the well-known book,Autumn, by Ali Smith, shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and analyse the ways in which the debates leading to as well as the events following the 2016 Brexit referendum contribute to the writing of a desfunctional narration in which borders, domestic spaces and identities are questioned on a daily basis. The essay argues that there is strong link between the making of the story and the deconstruction of a national identity: the fragile exploration of anxieties of belonging and nationhood opens up a space for thought through words, inviting the reader to think about the relationship between language, space and time and affirming the importance …

Incidental catch of marine turtles by Spanish bottom trawlers in the western Mediterranean

2014

A questionnaire-based survey of fishermen was conducted in the Valencia region (eastern Spain) to assess the levels of marine turtle bycatch. Interviews covered 41.3% of the bottom trawling fleet in the region and included 111 fishermen (one per boat). Results were combined with those from previous studies conducted in neighbouring regions using the same methodology to assess the global impact of bottom trawling on the western Mediterranean stock of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). Estimated turtle catch per unit effort (CPUE) is 0.09 turtles per vessel per month, according to the information reported by fishermen. As a consequence, the whole fleet of bottom trawlers operating off t…

Uptake and presentation of exogenous antigen and presentation of endogenously produced antigen by skin dendritic cells represent equivalent pathways …

2008

Gene gun-mediated biolistic DNA vaccination with beta-galactosidase (betaGal)-encoding plasmid vectors efficiently modulated antigen-induced immune responses in an animal model of type I allergy, including the inhibition of immunoglobulin E (IgE) production. Here we show that CD4(+) as well as CD8(+) T cells from mice biolistically transfected with a plasmid encoding betaGal under the control of the fascin promoter (pFascin-betaGal) are capable of inhibiting betaGal-specific IgE production after adoptive transfer into naïve recipients. Moreover, suppression of IgE production was dependent on interferon (IFN)-gamma. To analyse the modalities of activation of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells regardi…

Allergic contact dermatitis: understanding the immune response and potential for targeted therapy using cytokines.

1997

Allergic contact dermatitis is the most common job-related disease of the western world. The only available treatments are avoidance of contact with the allergen and the use of potent corticosteroids. Recently, the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of this disease has been studied and, besides defining the key molecules and basic cellular immune responses responsible for disease development, these studies might help to develop new therapeutic strategies to target cytokines and thereby try to alter or abrogate ongoing immune reactions.
