Approximation Algorithms for Multicoloring Planar Graphs and Powers of Square and Triangular Meshes

2006

A multicoloring of a weighted graph G is an assignment of sets of colors to the vertices of G so that two adjacent vertices receive two disjoint sets of colors. A multicoloring problem on G is to find a multicoloring of G. In particular, we are interested in a minimum multicoloring that uses the least total number of colors. The main focus of this work is to obtain upper bounds on the weighted chromatic number of some classes of graphs in terms of the weighted clique number. We first propose an 11/6-approximation algorithm for multicoloring any weighted planar graph. We then study the multicoloring problem on powers of square and triangular meshes. Among other results, we show that the infi…

Direct experimental observation of mesoscopic fluorous domains in fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids

2017

Fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids (FRTILs) represent a class of solvent media that are attracting great attention due to their IL-specific properties as well as features stemming from their fluorous nature. Medium-to-long fluorous tails constitute a well-defined apolar moiety in the otherwise polar environment. Similarly to the case of alkyl tails, such chains are expected to result in the formation of self-assembled fluorous domains. So far, however, no direct experimental observation has been made of the existence of such structural heterogeneities on the nm scale. We report here the first experimental evidence of the existence of mesoscopic spatial segregation of fluorinated dom…

Using the dglars Package to Estimate a Sparse Generalized Linear Model

2015

dglars is a publicly available R package that implements the method proposed in Augugliaro et al. (J. R. Statist. Soc. B 75(3), 471-498, 2013) developed to study the sparse structure of a generalized linear model (GLM). This method, called dgLARS, is based on a differential geometrical extension of the least angle regression method. The core of the dglars package consists of two algorithms implemented in Fortran 90 to efficiently compute the solution curve. dglars is a publicly available R package that implements the method proposed in Augugliaro et al. A large cross-ancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies identifies 69 novel risk loci for primary open-angle glaucoma and includes a …

2020

AbstractWe conducted a large multi-ethnic meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) on a total of 34,179 cases vs 349,321 controls, and identified 127 independent risk loci, almost doubling the number of known loci for POAG. The majority of loci have broadly consistent effect across European, Asian and African ancestries. We identify a link, both genome-wide and at specific loci, between POAG and Alzheimer’s disease. Gene expression data and bioinformatic functional analyses provide further support for the functional relevance of the POAG risk genes. Several drug compounds target these risk genes and may be potential candidates for developing no…

Genetic polymorphism related to exfoliative glaucoma is also associated with primary open-angle glaucoma risk

2014

Background To investigate the possible association of the rs2165241 polymorphism (C > T) in LOXL1 gene with the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma in a Mediterranean population. Methods The analysis of genetic polymorphisms was performed by standard TaqMan allelic discrimination technique, using a 7900HT Sequence Detection System (Applied Biosystems). Results In a recessive genetic model, the T allele of the rs2165241 polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma (TT vs. CC: odds ratios = 2.19, 95% confidence interval = [1.33–3.62]). After multivariate logistic regression model adjusted by age and weight, the magnitude of the association decreased b…

The state of stroke services across the globe: Report of World Stroke Organization–World Health Organization surveys

2021

Background Improving stroke services is critical for reducing the global stroke burden. The World Stroke Organization–World Health Organization– Lancet Neurology Commission on Stroke conducted a survey of the status of stroke services in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared to high-income countries. Methods Using a validated World Stroke Organization comprehensive questionnaire, we collected and compared data on stroke services along four pillars of the stroke quadrangle (surveillance, prevention, acute stroke, and rehabilitation) in 84 countries across World Health Organization regions and economic strata. The World Health Organization also conducted a survey of non-communicabl…

Wetting properties at the surface of iota-carrageenan-based edible films

2006

International audience; Surface properties of edible films composed of a polymeric matrix of carrageenan in association with hydrophobic material were studied by contact angle measurements. The use of this technique not only in a static mode but also in a dynamic way enables investigation of surface hydrophobicity as well as surface wettability. The absorption flux inside the material can be estimated from the wetting kinetic, which can be very useful to quickly compare water barrier efficiency of the tested films. Comparison of carrageenan films with films containing known amounts of additives enables understanding and correlation of changes of the surface properties with the nature of use…
