Impact of salmon farming on Atlantic cod spatio-temporal reproductive dynamics

Salmon farming in marine net pens is a major activity in many temperate regions. This industry may affect coastal ecosystems in several ways, such as with waste pollution and parasite spillover. Less is known about the extent to which salmon farming disrupts the use of inshore spawning grounds by wild fish, such as the Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. Acoustic telemetry was therefore used to explore cod space use during the spawning season in a coastal region in mid-Norway with multiple salmon farms. Molecular polarizability of fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes

The interacting induced dipoles polarization model implemented in our program POLAR is used for the calculation of the molecular dipole µ and tensor quadrupole moments and also the dipole–dipole polarizability . The method is tested with Scn, Cn (fullerene and graphite) and endohedral Scn@Cm clusters. The polarizability is an important quantity for the identification of clusters with different numbers of atoms and even for the separation of isomers. The results for the polarizability are of the same order of magnitude as from reference calculations performed with our version of the program PAPID. Generation of defects in amorphous SiO(2) assisted by two-step absorption on impurity sites.

Generation of the Si dangling bond defect in amorphous SiO(2) (E' centre) induced by tunable pulsed UV laser radiation was investigated by in situ optical absorption measurements. The defect generation efficiency peaks when the photon energy equals ∼5.1 eV, it depends quadratically on laser intensity and is correlated with the native linear absorption due to Ge impurities. We propose a model in which the generation of E' is assisted by a two-step absorption process occurring on Ge impurity sites.

ZnO thin films grown by metal?organic vapor phase epitaxy along the nonpolar direction and exhibiting semipolar facets have been chemically etched with HCl. In order to get an insight into the influence of the ZnO wurtzite structure in the chemical reactivity of the material, Kelvin probe microscopy and convergent beam electron diffraction have been employed to unambiguously determine the absolute polarity of the facets, showing that facets are unstable upon etching in an HCl solution and transform into planes. Evolucion paleoambiental desde el Holoceno temprano hasta la actualidad del marjal de Almenara (Mediterráneo occidental)

The main aim of this study is to characterize the different stages in the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Almenara marsh, Spain, from the early Holocene to the present day. This marsh is one of the most important in Castellón province. Five cores extracted from the marsh underwent sedimentological analysis, micropalaeontological study (foraminifera, ostracods and gastropods) and 14C dating. The results show that before the maximum transgression of the Mediterranean during the Marine Isotope Stage 1 (5500 cal yr. Visible to vacuum-UV range optical absorption of oxygen dangling bonds in amorphous SiO2

Synthetic silica glass with an optical absorption spectrum dominated by oxygen dangling bonds (nonbridging oxygen hole centers, or NBOHCs) and having negligible (1%) contribution from the usually copresent Si dangling bonds (E\ensuremath{'}-centers), was prepared by room temperature ultraviolet photobleaching of high SiOH content (``wet'') silica, irradiated by F${}_{2}$ laser (7.9 eV) at $T$ = 80 K. Resonance Raman of oxygen dangling bonds in amorphous silicon dioxide

We investigate the origin of a resonance Raman band induced by ionizing radiation in amorphous silicon dioxide (silica glass), which can be detected under ultraviolet laser excitation. A silica sample, rich of oxygen-excess related defects, was prepared by treating some length of a pure-silica-core multimode fiber in an O2 atmosphere (at high temperature and pressure) and by irradiating it with X-rays at 10 MGy(SiO2) dose. A micro-Raman study revealed a gaussian band peaking at 896 cm−1 with a full width at half maximum of 32 cm−1, which could be detected by exciting the sample with the 325-nm line of a HeCd laser.
