Defects in oxide glasses

An insight into the present understanding of point defects in the simplest and the most radiation-resistant oxide glass, glassy silicon dioxide (silica) is presented. The defects and their generation processes in glassy and α-quartz forms of silicon dioxide are significantly different. The only defect, confirmed to be similar in both materials, is oxygen vacancy. In silica, additional defects of dangling bond type are generated from precursor sites formed by strained Si-O bonds, and by modifier ions. Toward a mechanistic understanding of vulnerability to hook-and-line fishing: Boldness as the basic target of angling-induced selection

In passively operated fishing gear, boldness-related behaviors should fundamentally affect the vulnerability of individual fish and thus be under fisheries selection. To test this hypothesis, we used juvenile common-garden reared carp (Cyprinus carpio) within a narrow size-range to investigate the mechanistic basis of behavioral selection caused by angling. We focused on one key personality trait (i.e., boldness), measured in groups within ponds, two morphological traits (body-shape and head-shape), and one life-history trait (juvenile growth capacity) and studied mean standardized selection gradients caused by angling. Transplantation assessment of degraded Posidonia oceanica habitats: site selection and long-term monitoring

A model developed for Zostera marina was adapted and used to select suitable areas for Posidonia oceanica transplantation in the Gulf of Palermo, where recent rehabilitation programmes have reduced human pressure. Generation of defects in amorphous SiO(2) assisted by two-step absorption on impurity sites.

Generation of the Si dangling bond defect in amorphous SiO(2) (E' centre) induced by tunable pulsed UV laser radiation was investigated by in situ optical absorption measurements. The defect generation efficiency peaks when the photon energy equals ∼5.1 eV, it depends quadratically on laser intensity and is correlated with the native linear absorption due to Ge impurities. We propose a model in which the generation of E' is assisted by a two-step absorption process occurring on Ge impurity sites.

First report of an olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) inside the Mediterranean Sea

We report the first confirmed occurrence of a Lepidochelys olivacea in the Mediterranean Sea based on the study of an individual stranded on a beach, located in the town of Oropesa del Mar (40º05ʹ32ʺN, 0º08ʹ02ʺE), Castellón province, East Spain, in May 2014. Morphological and genetic analyses were used to confirm the identification of the species. The individual had a sequence that matched the 470 bp Lepidochelys olivacea haplotype F (Genbank accession number: AF051773), found in several Atlantic populations. This becomes one of the northernmost known occurrences of olive ridleys in the world and is the first reports of this species in the Mediterranean Sea.

Characterization of E'delta and triplet point defects in oxygen-deficient amorphous silicon dioxide

We report an experimental study by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of gamma ray irradiation induced point defects in oxygen deficient amorphous SiO2 materials. We have found that three intrinsic (E'gamma, E'delta and triplet) and one extrinsic ([AlO4]0) paramagnetic centers are induced. All the paramagnetic defects but E'gamma center are found to reach a concentration limit value for doses above 10^3 kGy, suggesting a generation process from precursors. Isochronal thermal treatments of a sample irradiated at 10^3 kGy have shown that for T>500 K the concentrations of E'gamma and E'delta centers increase concomitantly to the decrease of [AlO4]0. Temperature dependance of the generation and decay of E’ centers induced in silica by 4.7eV laser radiation

We report a study of the generation of silicon dangling bonds (E' centers) induced in fused silica by 4.7 eV laser irradiation in the 10 200 K the induced defects undergo a post-irradiation decay due to their reaction with mobile H(2). Thermal atomic layer deposition of AlOxNy thin films for surface passivation of nano-textured flexible silicon

Abstract Aluminum oxynitride (AlOxNy) films with different nitrogen concentration are prepared by thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) for flexible nano-textured silicon (NT-Si) surface passivation. The AlOxNy films are shown to exhibit a homogeneous nitrogen-doping profile and the presence of an adequate amount of hydrogen, which is investigated by Time-of-Fight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ToF-ERDA). The effective minority carrier lifetimes are measured after the NT-Si surface passivation; the minimum surface recombination velocity (SRV) of 5 cm-s−1 is achieved with the AlOxNy film in comparison to the Al2O3 and AlN films (SRV of 7–9 cm-s−1). An increased F2-laser damage in ‘wet’ silica glass due to atomic hydrogen: A new hydrogen-related E′-center

Abstract A dramatic increase of F2-laser induced room temperature-stable point defects in ‘wet’ synthetic silica glass occurs when irradiation temperature is lowered to 80 K. Contrary to the predictions based on the established models of defect processes, a large part of defects induced at 80 K remains stable also at the room temperature. The intensities of the laser-induced optical absorption bands of the non-bridging oxygen hole centers (2.0 and 4.8 eV) and E′-centers (5.8 eV) are comparable to those created by neutron irradiation (1018 n/cm2).
