Chemical Composition and Antibacterial Activity of Extracts of Helleborus bocconei Ten. subsp. intermedius

Helleborus bocconei Ten. subsp. intermedius (Ranunculaceae) is a Sicilian medicinal plant used for the treatment of pneumonia affecting cows and horses and for the removal of human decayed molars. The goal of our study was to assess the biological activity of Helleborus bocconei subsp. intermedius by testing its extracts for their activity against bacteria known to cause respiratory diseases. The two more active extracts (light petroleum from roots and aerial parts), as well as the dichloromethane extracts, were analyzed by GC/MS and their composition is reported.

Summary A number of new 4-diazopyrazole derivatives were prepared by the reaction of 1- R -3-methyl-5(R 1 -substituted)benzamidopyrazoles with a sevenfold excess of nitrous acid in acetic medium. The compounds were tested for activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Paecilomyces varioti . The highest microbial susceptibility was shown by Gram-positive bacteria, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in the range 0.5–12.5 μg/mL. Abstract Objective In this study we demonstrate that inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) exhibits a dual protective effect on teeth: it elicits a strong antibacterial effect against the cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans and, in form of amorphous calcium polyP microparticles (size of 100–400 nm), it efficiently reseals cracks/fissures in the tooth enamel and dentin. Proteins represent a versatile biopolymer material for the preparation of nanoparticles due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. This study presents a protein-based nanoparticle system consisting of high surface PEGylated lysozyme polyethylene glycol-modified lysozyme (LYZmPEG ). This protein modification leads to a solubility switch, which allows a nanoparticle preparation using a mild double emulsion method without the need of surfactants. Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil of Pulicaria odora L.

The chemical composition of the volatile oil constituent from Pulicaria odora L. roots has been analyzed by GC/MS. Twenty-seven components were identified, being thymol (47.83%) and its derivative isobutyrate (30.05%) the main constituents in the oil. Furthermore, the oil was tested against seven bacteria at different concentrations. Results showed that the oil exhibited a significant antibacterial activity.

A new topological method that makes it possible to predict the properties of molecules on the basis of their chemical structures is applied in the present study to quinolone antimicrobial agents. This method uses neural networks in which training algorithms are used as well as different concepts and methods of artificial intelligence with a suitable set of topological descriptors. This makes it possible to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of quinolones. Analysis of the results shows that the experimental and calculated values are highly similar. Deeper knowledge of the potentiality of aromatic plants can provide results of economic importance for food and pharmacological industry. The essential oils of seven Lamiaceae species were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and assayed for their antibacterial, antifungal and mutagenic activities. Monoterpenes in the oils ranged between 82.47% (hyssop oil) and 97.48% (thyme oil), being mainly represented by oxygenated compounds.
