About adapting Conrad's prose to film
2021
On the example of Apocalypse Now by F. F. Coppola, Heart of Darkness by N. Roeg, The Duellists by R. Scott, The Shadow Line by A. Wajda, and Secret Sharer by P. Fudakowski, I would like to show that Joseph Conrad’s prose is a cinematic trap for film directors. This being so, I attempt to answer the question as to why it is so difficult to make a film of something that is so cinematic, when it is being read, and why film adaptations that closely follow Conrad’s narratives are less Conradian than films which are “merely” inspired by Conrad’s works.
2020
Disasters are hardly ever unequivocal. Any attempt to sort them out remains a forever open task. A natural part of everyday life in the past, disasters have been reinvented by the modern world as a challenge that essentially needs to be eliminated from public life. Due to the dramatic expansion of humans and human activity, one can hardly call them ‘natural’ anymore. This article focuses on disasters and their significant culture-forming potential, discussing it primarily on the example of the AIDS epidemic. With this new epidemic, the catastrophic vision of history was rekindled and a specific (post-)apocalyptic social climate was created. AIDS, called the plague of the 20th century, reviv…
The End of the World after the End of Finitude : On a Recently Prominent Speculative Tone in Philosophy
2017
This note concerns the exceptional buckle-plate to the Christ cavalier of the Apocalypse discove…
Kulturowe obrazy epidemii i wizje świata „od nowa”
2022
This article seeks to describe the social and cultural changes in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The (post)pandemic landscape turned out to materialise the long-felt visions – dystopias. The metaphors of alienation and exile have proven dramatically real in the age of the general (self-)isolation. Particularly interesting are the social reactions to ‘new’ threats: from epidemic denialism and scepticism to epidemic panic. The biological cataclysm has triggered an avalanche of social antagonisms, contradicting the optimistic (and, it appears, naïve) thesis about the democratic nature of the disease/epidemic. In the context of the events observed since 2020, one may wonder why the wor…
Violent Encounters : The Hobbesian State of Nature in DayZ
2016
In his seminal work on social contract theory, Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes described the anarchic pre-societal condition of the state of nature. In this predicament – aptly named as “the war of all against all” – people lived poor, short and brutish lives. The dystopian world simulated in the survival horror game DayZ mirrors this natural state of man. The game invites players to roleplay survivors of a zombie apocalypse. The present paper examines the factors contributing to pervasive violence, moral ambiguity and degeneration of human condition, which are prominent features of DayZ’s gameplay. The article will situate DayZ into the context of Hobbesian state of nature and explicate elements …
