Minding morality : ethical artificial societies for public policy modeling
2020
AbstractPublic policies are designed to have an impact on particular societies, yet policy-oriented computer models and simulations often focus more on articulating the policies to be applied than on realistically rendering the cultural dynamics of the target society. This approach can lead to policy assessments that ignore crucial social contextual factors. For example, by leaving out distinctive moral and normative dimensions of cultural contexts in artificial societies, estimations of downstream policy effectiveness fail to account for dynamics that are fundamental in human life and central to many public policy challenges. In this paper, we supply evidence that incorporating morally sal…

Ensuring the Consistency of Biosimilars
2017
Background: Biological products are subject to constant reappraisal by regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies once they have entered the market, since every improvement in their manufacturing process has the potential to alter the basic properties of these molecules. Methods: Narrative review focusing on scientific literature as well as legal documents from regulatory agencies. Results: Evaluating the impact of each manufacturing change of these drugs requires rigorous analyses in proportion to the anticipated risk of inducing more or less molecular micro-heterogenicity. There are currently more than 30 biosimilars of TNF-alpha blockers at different stages of testing, each with a …
Innovations sociales et création de valeur partagée au sein des entreprises
2017
This work focuses on social innovations that are likely to create shared value, that is, to seek commercial success that has the potential to generate benefits for the society. This shared value deals with the wellbeing of low-income consumers and poor people. These innovations are also a lever to reduce the pressures that can be exerted by stakeholders in the social-political sphere (regulatory authorities and soft power), if the company does not reduce the negative externalities produced by its activities.
Research in disaster settings: a systematic qualitative review of ethical guidelines
2016
Background Conducting research during or in the aftermath of disasters poses many specific practical and ethical challenges. This is particularly the case with research involving human subjects. The extraordinary circumstances of research conducted in disaster settings require appropriate regulations to ensure the protection of human participants. The goal of this study is to systematically and qualitatively review the existing ethical guidelines for disaster research by using the constant comparative method (CCM). Methods We performed a systematic qualitative review of disaster research ethics guidelines to collect and compare existing regulations. Guidelines were identified by a three-tie…

The goal of this article is to present a first list of ethical concerns that may arise from research and personal use of virtual reality (VR) and related technology, and to offer concrete recommendations for minimizing those risks. Many of the recommendations call for focused research initiatives. In the first part of the article, we discuss the relevant evidence from psychology that motivates our concerns. In section 1.1, we cover some of the main results suggesting that one’s environment can influence one’s psychological states, as well as recent work on inducing illusions of embodiment. Then, in section 1.2, we go on to discuss recent evidence indicating that immersion in VR can have psy…
The sleep of (scientific) reason produces (literary) monsters. : or, how science and literature shake hands
2016
Absorptive capacity and its impact on innovation and performance: findings from SEM and fsQCA
2018
Innovation can provide sustainable competitive advantages to service companies that consider the absorption of external knowledge a key strategic issue. Using the four dimensions of absorptive capacity, this study examined the impact of absorptive capacity on innovation in service delivery processes and explored how this innovation influences business performance. Structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) were applied to a sample of 134 companies drawn from the Colombian tourism sector. The results of the SEM indicate that innovation in service delivery processes is positively influenced by two of the four dimensions of absorptive capacity…
Cultural and psychological variables predicting academic dishonesty: a cross-sectional study in nine countries
