Theoretical relations for the dependence of the z-average radius of gyration Rz as a function of the mass average molar mass Mw are derived for expanded coils, persistence coils with persistence of direction, persistence coils with persistence of direction and curvature, and for needles, all exhibiting a Schulz-distribution of their molar masses. Functional Magnetic Mesoporous Silica Microparticles Capped with an Azo-Derivative: A Promising Colon Drug Delivery Device

[EN] Magnetic micro-sized mesoporous silica particles were used for the preparation of a gated material able to release an entrapped cargo in the presence of an azo-reducing agent and, to some extent, at acidic pH. The magnetic mesoporous microparticles were loaded with safranin O and the external surface was functionalized with an azo derivative 1 (bearing a carbamate linkage) yielding solid S1. Aqueous suspensions of S1 at pH 7.4 showed negligible safranin O release due to the presence of the bulky azo derivative attached onto the external surface of the inorganic scaffold. Core-shell functionalized zirconium-pemetrexed coordination nanoparticles as carriers with a high drug content

Selected drug molecules with Lewis base functions can be assembled into coordinative nanoparticles (NPs) by linking them with suitable metal ions. Such nanomaterials exhibit a high material economy due to high drug contents and minor amounts of inactive additives. The antifolate pemetrexed (PMX) which is used for the treatment of lung cancers contains two carboxy functions that are able to undergo coordinative binding of metal ions. Analysis of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Aqueous Samples Using C18 Glass Column Extraction

Abstract A method for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) trace extraction from contaminated water at the part-pertrillion levels is described. This procedure involves quantitative adsorption of PCBs on Cis glass microcolumns. PCBs are retained on the surface and subsequently eluted with n-hexane (5 mL) before gas chromatography. Recovery of water fortified with PCBs was 83.6-108.5%. Compared to liquid-liquid extraction methods, the Cis glass microcolumns give comparable results, lessen solvent costs, and are less time-consuming.

Crystal growth kinetics in deionised two-component colloidal suspensions

We report first measurements of the crystal growth velocity in deionised two-component aqueous suspensions of charged polystyrene latex spheres. The size ratio was 1:1.3 and mixing ratios up to 18% of the larger particle were investigated. For the pure components limiting growth velocities of (V ∞,120 = 4.8 µm s−1 and V ∞,156 = 2.9 µm s−1) were observed. In the mixture v drops with increasing mixing ratio even below (V ∞,156) of the large minority component. Careful monitoring of the deionisation procedure excludes the explanation of enhanced ionic contamination. Alternatives based on the kinetics of particle attachment and the position of the phase boundary are discussed.

Sugar-induced stabilization of the monoolein Pn3m bicontinuous cubic phase during dehydration

To explore the molecular mechanism of the protective function of sugars on cubic lipidic systems, the mesomorphic properties of the monoolein-water system, dehydrated in the presence of a series of sugars, have been studied by osmotic stress experiments. Two bicontinuous inverse cubic structures $(Pn3m$ and $\mathrm{Ia}3d)$ and a lamellar ${L}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ phase form under dehydration in pure water. In sugar solutions, the $\mathrm{Pn}3m$ phase shows an extraordinary stability: as a function of sugar concentration, the lattice parameter decreases to very low values, but no phase transitions occur. Validation of liposomal lipid composition by thin-layer chromatography.

Liposomes of different sizes are frequently used model systems for cellular membranes. To mimic the cellular environment, these liposomes are often prepared from a mixture of different lipids in organic solution. The preparation involves, at some point, the transfer into aqueous solution. Thus, both the total amount of lipid and the relative amount of each lipid species might deviate from the original composition in the organic solvent. Control on the morphology and photoelectrocatalytic properties of ZnO nanostructures by simple anodization varying electrolyte composition

Abstract Zinc oxide nanostructured electrodes were successfully synthesized by a simple method of anodization in different aqueous bicarbonate electrolytes. The influence of the anodization electrolyte composition (by adding ethanol or glycerol) on the morphology and the photoelectrocatalytic properties of the zinc oxide electrodes was studied, as well as the combined effect of anodizing under controlled hydrodynamic conditions. The influence of nitrogen incorporation on the optical properties of anodic Ta2O5

Abstract Anodic oxides were grown on sputter-deposited Ta in different aqueous solutions. A photoelectrochemical investigation was performed in order to estimate the band gap of the films as a function of the anodizing bath composition and formation voltage, i.e. thickness. Photoelectrochemical results provided evidence of sub-band gap photocurrent for films formed in a bath containing ammonium ions at pH 9. Elemental depth profiles obtained by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy revealed the presence of nitrogen species in the outer part of the anodic films, which is bonded to Ta according to XPS analysis.
