ACT-MAC: An asynchronous cooperative transmission MAC protocol for WSNs

2014

Duty cycling (DC) has been proven to be an efficient mechanism to reduce energy consumption in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). On the other hand, cooperative transmission (CT) enables longer range transmission to hop over an energy-hole node, resulting in more balanced energy consumption among nodes. In the literature, there exist few CT MAC protocols for DC operated WSNs and these protocols rely on fixed cycle length. In this paper, we propose a novel variable cycle length protocol, namely asynchronous cooperative transmission medium access control (ACT-MAC), which contains both features of reducing the unnecessary idle listening by DC and mitigating the energy-hole by making use of CT. T…

Integrating miniMin-HSP agents in a dynamic simulation framework

2004

In this paper, we describe the framework created for implementing AI-based animations for artificial actors in the context of IVE (Intelligent Virtual Environments). The minMin-HSP (Heuristic Search Planner) planner presented in [12] has been updated to deal with 3D dynamic simulation environments, using the sensory/actuator system fully implemented in UnrealTM and presented in [10]. Here, we show how we have integrated these systems to handle the necessary balance between the reactive and deliberative skills for 3D Intelligent Virtual Agents (3DIVAs). We have carried out experiments in a multi-agent 3D blocks world, where 3DIVAs will have to interleave sensing, planning and execution to be…

Kalman filter estimation of the contention dynamics in error-prone IEEE 802.11 networks

2008

In the last years, several strategies for maximizing the throughput performance of IEEE 802.11 networks have been proposed in literature. Specifically, it has been shown that optimizations are possible both at the medium access control (MAC) layer, and at the physical (PHY) layer. In fact, at the MAC layer, it is possible to minimize the channel wastes due to collisions and backoff expiration times, by tuning the minimum contention window as a function of the number n of competing stations. At the PHY layer, it is possible to improve the transmission robustness, by selecting a suitable modulation/coding scheme as a function of the channel quality perceived by the stations. However, the feas…

A Direct Approach to Robot Soccer Agents: Description for the Team Mainz Rolling rains Simulation League of RoboCup ’98

1999

In the team described in this paper we realize a direct approach to soccer agents for the simulation league of the RoboCup '98- tournament. Its backbone is formed by a detailed world model. Based on information which is reconstructed on the world model level, the rule-based decision levels chose a relevant action. The architecture for the goalie is different from the regular players, introducing heterogeneousness into the team, which combines the advantages of the different control strategies.

NoC Reconfiguration for CMP Virtualization

2011

At NoC level, the traffic interferences can be drastically reduced by using virtualization mechanisms. An effective strategy to virtualize a NoC consists in dividing the network in different partitions, each one serving different applications and traffic flows. In this paper, we propose a NoC reconfiguration mechanism to support NoC virtualization under real scenarios. Dynamic reassignment of network resources to different partitions is allowed in order to NoC dynamically adapts to application needs. Evaluation results show a good behavior of CMP virtualization.

Influence of the luminance spatial non-homogeneities of a display monitor on the contrast sensitivity function determination

1999

Abstract The application of computer devices equipped with video monitors both in clinical practice and human vision research has become widespread. These devices offer great advantages over other traditional methodologies (such as printed tests) because they facilitate the variation of the experimental parameters or the design of new psychophysical experiences. The aim of this paper is to determine the degree to which spatial inhomogeneity affects the generation of sinusoidal gratings on a video display. Knowing this degree of tolerance will enable us to determine the minimum demands that can be made on the graphic board and the video screens for their implementation in assessing contrast …

Web Services Specific Security Standards

2014

Abstract In this paper are described the aspects regarding the security within OGSA framework, introducing WS-Security standard – OASIS standard for Web Services security. There are approached the security aspects of the OGSA environment for the delivered architectures P2P – ‘Peer-to-Peer’ and there are presented the recent initiatives for creating a specific and adapted environment OGSA for the applications P2P and the specific security demands of these transactions. Furthermore, there are exposed aspects regarding the mobility of services and resources in the P2P context, with the conditions of applying WSRF framework, derived from OGSA to the P2P environments, SOA processes in P2P enviro…

Multiword Units in Machine Translation and Translation Technology

2018

This article describes a new word alignment gold standard for German nominal compounds and their multiword translation equivalents in English, French, Italian, and Spanish. The gold standard contains alignments for each of the ten language pairs, resulting in a total of 8,229 bidirectional alignments. It covers 362 occurrences of 137 different German compounds randomly selected from the corpus of European Parliament plenary sessions, sampled according to the criteria of frequency and morphological complexity. The standard serves for the evaluation and optimisation of automatic word alignments in the context of spotting translations of German compounds. The study also shows that in this text…

A hybrid architecture for autonomous agents

1997

A new hybrid approach for autonomous agents is described. The approach integrates in a principled way the functional and the behavioral approaches of agent design. The integration is based on the introduction of a conceptual space representation that links the subsymbolic level, which is a repository of reactive modules, with the symbolic level, in which rich symbolic descriptions of the agent environment take place. Results are reported obtained by an experimental implementation of the agent.
