A proctolin-like peptide is regulated after baculovirus infection and mediates in caterpillar locomotion and digestion

2022

Baculoviruses constitute a large group of invertebrate DNA viruses, predominantly infecting larvae of the insect order Lepidoptera. During a baculovirus infection, the virus spreads throughout the insect body producing a systemic infection in multiple larval tissues, included the central nervous system (CNS). As a main component of the CNS, neuropeptides are small protein-like molecules functioning as neurohormones, neurotransmitters, or neuromodulators. These peptides are involved in regulating animal physiology and behavior and could be altered after baculovirus infection. In this study, we have investigated the effect of Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) infection …

Polskie oddziały wojskowe w służbie rosyjskiej w latach 1793-1794. Przyczynki źródłowe

2017

The article discusses, on the basis both of the literaturę on the subject and archival materials preserved in two Russian archives, the fate of military units from the Crown and Lithuanian Army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which in the spring-summer of 1793 were taken to the Russian service. Initially, they had ca. 24 thousand soldiers, but the Russian decided to disband some of the units, while reducing the number of others, thus the number of the servicemen decreased to 15 thousand. The least reduced was the garrison of Kamianets-Podilskyi, for in the service of Empress Catherine II stayed two almost non-reduced infantry regiments of the former Polish Army and part of artillery …

Artykuły wojenne dla artylerii koronnej Augusta III z 1737 r

2016

During the reigns of Augustus II and Augustus III (both Polish) - the Lithuanian Commonwealth's armies were modernized. As early as during the Great Northern War the armies were equipped with relatively modern military devices, and within the following decades efforts were made to keep the equipment in line with European standards. As far as the financial and organizational aspects were concerned, the most significant were the reforms of the Silent Sejm from 1717. Moreover, it was signalled that the military law should be thoroughly modernized by means of developing generał and detailed codes determining the rules of military service and principles of everyday life for the soldiers of both …

Insecticidal activity of Vip3Aa, Vip3Ad, Vip3Ae, and Vip3Af from Bacillus thuringiensis against lepidopteran corn pests.

2012

Vip3Aa, Vip3Ad, Vip3Ae, and Vip3Af proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis were tested for their toxicity against Spodoptera frugiperda and Agrotis ipsilon. Vip3Ad was non-toxic to the two species. Vip3Ae and Vip3Af were significantly more toxic than Vip3Aa against S. frugiperda, both as protoxins and as toxins. Against A. ipsilon, Vip3Ae protoxin was more toxic than Vip3Aa and Vip3Af protoxins. Purification by metal-chelate affinity chromatography significantly affected Vip3Ae toxicity against the two insect species.

Bitwa pod Kowalewem (5 X 1716) – geneza, przebieg, konsekwencje

2019

The article, which refers to the research on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s military history in the 18th century and the crisis of Old Polish war art, presents the genesis, course and effects of the battle of Kowalewo of 5 October 1716. Epistolographic material, press and chronicle accounts along with plans of two battles constitute the source base. These primary sources were given a critical analysis, the acquired information being collated and verified in order to obtain a reasonably precise picture of the causes, course and consequences of the battle. The armed forces participating in the battle consisted of the military forces of the Tarnogród Confederation and the royal corps for…

La distribution des tuiles estampillées de la VIIIe légion Augusta autour de Mirebeau-sur-Bèze (Côte-d'Or, France)

2011

The 8th Augustan Legion was installed at Mirebeau-sur-Bèze (Côte-d'Or) after 70 AD following the troubles that arose with the Lingons. It remained there until the time of Domitian, a period of roughly twenty years, during which time the soldiers produced tiles stamped with the name of the legion. Analysis of the dispersion of the tiles in the region around Mirebeau shows that they followed the communication routes. Consideration of the contexts in which these tiles were used, their number on each site and the resources necessary to manufacture them reveals that the 8th Legion may have played a significant role in the diffusion and adoption of tiled roofs, a construction technique that was t…

Conrad Under Polish Eyes - or: is Conrad still "one of us"?

2015

This article discusses the attitude of Polish Conrad scholars towards Conrad and his works from the very beginning of his literary career to the present day, discussing the way they have perceived Conrad’s national identity and his cultural belonging. Although I aim to present a review of Polish criticism over the years, I pay particular attention to modern criticism, i.e. that of the period since the end of the Second World War, which includes the years of de facto communist rule (1945-1989). I try to determine whether Conrad is still “one of us”, whether he can be perceived as a moralist in the twenty-fi rst century and whether there is a need for such a moralist in present-day Poland.

L'alimentation carnée à Aventicum/Avenches capitale des Helvètes (Ier s. - IVe s. apr. J.-C.) Suisse, canton de Vaud

2010

This first synthesis concerns the animal bones, discovered since 1975 in Aventicum, the capital of Roman Switzerland. It is supported by the analysis of several residential districts, public sectors and suburbs, which represent five hundred chronological complexes and 74000 animal bones, dated from the Ist, to the IVth Century AD. During these centuries, Aventicum was incorporated to the Roman province of Gallia Belgica, then was raised to the status of a colonia and finally declined with the Empire. The analysis of bones was made to study various mutations which occurred during the occupation of the city. They include an improvement of breeding techniques, a new internal city organisation, …

Oficerowie wyznania ewangelickiego ze Śląska w armii szwedzkiej podczas wielkiej wojny północnej (1700 –1721). Prolegomena

2019

The article constitutes a prolegomenon to the issue of the service of Silesian Evangelicals in the Swedish army during the Great Northern War (1700 –1721), which has so far been absent in scholarly literature. The main objective of this text is to analyse their motives for joining the military service of the Kingdom of Sweden, as well as to trace their career and position in the officer corps. The above issue is part of the research on the officer corps of Charles XII’s army, and thus it may serve as an important point of reference also for the works devoted to the service of Polish and Lithuanian officers in the Swedish army of that period. A group of several dozen representatives of the S…
