Morphosynthesis of Strontianite Nanowires Using Polyacrylate Templates Tethered onto Self-Assembled Monolayers

Strontianite nanowires have been synthesized on self-assembled monolayers (SAM) in the presence of polyacrylate templates. The morphology of this product exhibits characteristic differences from that of products obtained in the absence of polyacrylate. It is demonstrated that the template-induced crystallization process involves the interaction between the SAM surface, polyacrylate (a dissolved polyelectrolyte), and the cations/anions in solution. By the combination of these components, hierarchically ordered mineral hybrid structures are formed.

"Smart" defects in colloidal photonic crystals

AbstractWe present a bottom-up approach for the construction of "Smart" active defects in colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs). These structures incorporate polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) planar defects embedded in silica CPCs through a combination of evaporation induced self-assembly and microcontact transfer printing. We show how the enormous chemical diversity inherent to PEMs can be harnessed to create chemically active defect structures responsive to solvent vapor pressures, light, temperature as well as redox cycling. Microstructuring of phospholipid bilayers on gold surfaces by micromolding in capillaries

Microstructuring of lipid bilayers on gold surfaces was achieved by micromolding in capillaries employing chemically modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Microfluidic networks of PDMS were prepared by micromolding and functionalized with thiol end-groups using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane. The PDMS stamps were firmly attached to the gold substrate via quasi-covalent linkage providing a tight seal, a prerequisite for establishing individual addressable capillaries. Self-Assembly of 1D/2D Hybrid Nanostructures Consisting of a Cd(II) Coordination Polymer and NiAl-Layered Double Hydroxides

The preparation and characterization of a novel hybrid material based on the combination of a 2D-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and a 1D-coordination polymer (1D-CP) has been achieved through a simple mixture of suspensions of both building blocks via an exfoliation/restacking approach. The hybrid material has been thoroughly characterized demonstrating that the 1D-CP moieties are intercalated as well as adsorbed on the surface of the LDH, giving rise to a layered assembly with the coexistence of the functionalities of their initial constituents. Redox-Responsive and Thermoresponsive Supramolecular Nanosheet Gels with High Young's Moduli

Supramolecular gels made from 2D building blocks are emerging as one of the novel multifunctional soft materials for various applications. This study reports on a class of supramolecular nanosheet gels formed through a reversible self-assembly process involving both intramolecular folding and intermolecular self-assembly of poly[oligo(ethylene glycol)-co-(phenyl-capped bithiophenes)]. Such hierarchical self-assembled structure allows the gels to switch between sol and gel states under either redox or thermostimulus. Poly(styrene sulfonate) self-organization: electrostatic and secondary interactions

We investigate the self-organization of PSS in brushes and polyelectrolyte multilayers with X-ray, neutron and optical reflectivity. The electrostatic force dominates brush phases and adsorption behavior, additionally we find evidence of a strong hydrophobic force: (i) within amphiphilic diblock copolymer monolayers, a PSS monolayer adsorbs flatly to the hydrophobic block, (ii) on temperature increase (and with screened electrostatic forces), more PSS is adsorbed onto oppositely charged surfaces, and (iii) a polyelectrolyte multilayers shrinks when heated at 100% r.h.
